Chapter 219: Guessing game

Mingshen stared at the hand he held and looked away for a moment as if pondering over something. Jia blinked and asked, "Yes?"

Mingshen held a prideful smirk and said, "It wasn’t that big of a deal."

No, wait. That wasn’t what I wanted to say, he frowned.

"For you, it might not be but for me, it certainly is," Jia smiled.

"Good to see you holding me in high regard."

"I give respect where it is due credit."

"Good."

He was still holding her hand to which she asked, "Anything else?"

"Yes."

"Go on."

Mingshen stared at her and looked away for a moment again. Then he said, "The custody room you were in was very small."

"Huh?" Jia was perplexed. "Well...It’s a custody room. It’s not supposed to be luxurious for people taken into custody. And that makes me ask you something I wanted to ask you for sometime."

"What?"

"How involved were you with my case’s closure?"

Mingshen innocently blinked. "I don’t understand. Judge Zhi seems to be a wise man."

"And now I hear that the same wise man’s grandson and daughter-in-law will be on trial and the same wise man himself has come under a lot of scrutiny."

He gasped. "Oh really. That’s strange."

"Did you threaten them?" Jia cut short the conversation.

He sheepishly waved his hand. "I just had a nice conversation with them at dinner. It was such a lovely atmosphere~ Clearly, they felt very honored with my presence."

Her eyes narrowed. Mingshen wasn’t going to come out with it, so she dropped it.

"I sure am out but...I don’t really appreciate these methods."

"Haven’t you enticed suspects and criminals with threats and carrots to get your job done?"

Her brow twitched.

I cannot deny that...

"It feels a little weird when I am the subject of it."

"Get used to it when Yang Mingshen is by your side," he smirked.

"You are on my side huh?" She raised her brow.

Mingshen looked away.

That wasn’t what I wanted to say.

"Anyway, let’s go now."

But Mingshen still held her hand like some unshakeable glue.

"What are you thinking so hard about?"

"Nothing."

"Then why are you still holding my hand?" tilted her head.

Mingshen tapped his foot on the ground, staring at her. He put his free hand in his coat’s pocket and took out a shiny badge.

"I think this is yours."

Jia’s eyes widened. "My badge. How do you have it?" She asked in wonder while slowly taking it in her hand.

"I just have it."

"Huojin is searching for this everywhere. Wait a minute," she looked at him closely. "Don’t tell me you took it from the bureau the day you met me?"

He beamed. "Of course, I did! Naturally, the badge was supposed to be with me, right?"

"What is so natural about that?"

"I mean, you know~"

Jia scrunched up her brows. "No, I really don’t. Why did you take my badge?"

"Because I wanted to return it to you~"

"Why...why would...you take it just to return it to me?" Jia failed to understand his logic.

"I know you know about it."

She was dumbfounded. "I know there is something very fundamentally wrong with you but doesn’t it feel a little too wrong today?"

The corner of his lips twitched. He pressed his lips, staring at her.

"Are you playing some guessing game with me?" she asked.

"Why should I be playing a guessing game with you when the message is so crystal clear?"

Jia sighed. "Well, you seem to be out of your tune today so I will let it go."

His gaze darkened.

"But thanks for keeping it safe with you..." she said after a pause, "for the mysterious reason you hold. Though this is supposed to be a crime. How did Huojin let you go?"

"He saw nothing."

She snorted. "Yeah sure. Anyway, let’s head back."

Mingshen finally let go of her hand but not with much satisfaction as the creases on his forehead clearly expressed that.

Spicy is a smart cop. So I wonder why she wasn’t able to figure out that this great Yang Mingshen was expressing his gratitude for her act.

That act was none other than Jia putting her badge on the line without a second’s thought for a decision that he made about Ehuang’s surgery.

Mingshen wasn’t sure how to feel about it. But he was damn sure that it took guts for an officer to do what she did, especially for an enemy like him.

Jia’s police badge to her was like how Mingshen felt about his medical license. That small shiny card held all their pride and their worth to them. It was what defined them. It was proof of their work and loyalty to their field.

If that little badge was snatched away, it meant the end of their careers.

Jia had put her whole career on line to protect his.

So what Mingshen wanted to do this whole time was simply thank her.

Thank you for protecting me.

Thank you for taking the responsibility and burden of my actions.

Thank you for putting your career at stake for me.

No, you aren’t a coward.

And he wanted to thank her by personally giving her badge and honor to her. It was like a promise he made to himself.

You are burning in that fire to protect my license so I will be sure as hell to protect yours till you get out of it.

It was as simple of an emotion as that.

But Mingshen was Mingshen. He had never really thanked anybody because he was always the object of everybody’s admiration and gratitude.

He knew how to receive gratitude. He didn’t know how to give it.

So now he stood rooted at his place and trying to find proper words to express his gratitude without really letting Jia understand that he was thanking her because he felt that it would seriously affect his image.

Jia let out a chuckle. "You are acting a little strange today. But it’s not the annoying type of strange. For the last time now, let’s go."

He stared at her walking away, putting his hands in his pockets.

I guess it doesn’t hurt to give Spicy some more hints~
