Chapter 216: Tricked
Chapter 216: Tricked
Jia geared herself the next day. She was still in the custody room, waiting for Huojin to come in and fetch her to the court. She was uncertain about the outcome but not regretful about her decision.
She breathed out when the door opened with Huojin and Tang Haitao walking in. She nodded as it was time but instead Tang Haitao said, "There is no need, Song Jia."
He came forward and slid something towards her.
She blinked. "Sir Tang, I don’t think you should be passing me a destructive weapon like a gun to a detainee."
"Now I can. There has been an update regarding your case."
She waited, holding her breath.
"The case against you has been dismissed."
"What?" She could only stare at him.
"Yes. For the first time, Yu Ehuang’s testimony was taken and after taking her statement, Judge Zhi concluded that what you did only held best interests for her sake. Though feelings aren’t really considered for a judgment, he made it an exception this time. Yu Ehuang’s case was truly tragic and what you did was very humane. Sometimes cases like these bring a grey area to the judgments."
Jia listened to him dumbfounded. "...That cannot be how it possibly could have gone."
"What do you mean?"
"My case was literally moved to today and just a few hours prior, the judge dismissed the case?"
"Because Yu Ehuang’s testimony just came in. It was very emotional."
"But her testimony wasn’t considered against her parents."
"There is still suspicion of Xiong Jin’s manipulation surrounding it, which is why there could be a possibility of it being biased. We heard what she told us about that night too but for now, it won’t be admissible in court."
"So her parents are still free."
"Unfortunately yes, unless we bring in some concrete evidence."
"But what about me? Isn’t my confession supposed to be concrete evidence?"
Tang Haitao smiled. "Judge Zhi concluded that the subject of the surgeries is different to the accusations against her parents. They cannot weighed the same way. She has been suffering for a long time and so the medical necessity of it will be deemed differently. In a humane sense, you did the right thing."
Jia asked, "...So I will be let off?"
"Yes. You can resume your duties. But because you still broke the law, you will be demoted from Superintendent Class Three to Class Two officer."
"Is that really a punishment?"
"You want more?"
"I fail to see how everything got sorted so easily with only a demotion."
"Judge Zhi happens to be a very reasonable judge."
Jia pressed her lips. "Pardon my rudeness but I didn’t see much of that reason applied in Ehuang’s case. It is not that uncommon that parents assault their children. There are toxic and abusive parents in this world too, so I never understood the court’s acceptance that Ehuang is falsely accusing her parents simply because of her boyfriend’s brainwashing."
He said nothing.
"So I don’t understand how my case changed his perspective."
"Like I said, the assault of that night and the surgeries of years ago are seen differently."
"They shouldn’t be because the surgeries were a form of their assault only."
"What are you trying to imply here, Jia?"
Jia breathed in deeply. "Does Mingshen have to do with any of this?"
"You think the judge will yield to Mingshen?" He raised his brow.
"There could be some very powerful reason behind it."
He smiled. "I think Judge Zhi is responsible enough to understand any threats and as a fair judge, he won’t let such outside factors affect his judgment. So take your gun, Jia and enjoy your freedom. First of all, you were not behind Yang Mingshen’s decision anyway, so you weren’t supposed to be sitting in this custody room for long either. Though Huojin is still unable to find your badge," Tang Haitao threw a cold glare at Huojin to which he sweated.
"But we can figure out about it," he smiled again. "For now, congratulations for the dismissal of the case. Work hard to earn your second class again."
Tang Haitao left with nothing more to say and Jia immediately grilled Huojin.
"Tell me the inside truth Huojin," her eyes narrowed.
"W-what? Why are you looking at me like that? I know the same things as Sir Tang does. Trust me, even though you made Mingshen and me work together to catch the She helper, he did not say anything about your case."
Jia still looked at me suspiciously.
"I am speaking the truth!"
"It’s hard to believe you because at times, you and Mingshen are in the same tandem."
"..."
"Anyway," she took her gun and stared at it for a moment. "I will ask all my questions to Mingshen later."
She looked back at him and asked, "Where are we on She?"
—
"I had no choice."
Judge Zhi exhaled a silent breath as he held his phone near his ear. "Yang Mingshen had...something against me."
The voice on the other side crackled. "So you budged under that pressure and dismissed Song Jia’s case?"
"If I didn’t, then I would have been in deep trouble."
"You or your grandson?"
"...What?"
"Tsk. Tsk. It was my fault that I didn’t get such a golden piece of information about you. And here I thought you were just another corrupt judge easy to influence,l. Had I known about your grandson, I would have used that card myself. Ah, what a bummer. I lost to Yang Mingshen."
"What are you talking about?"
"Have you checked social media? Or does an old timer like you still watch the news? Your grandson’s face is plastered all over it."
Judge Zhi’s eyes widened and he quickly opened the app.
There it was.
A post had gotten viral from a user who came out saying how she was harassed by Zhi Guanyu at college and later forced to leave Beijing on the threat of leaking her fake naked videos. But now she learned that he never had any such pictures with him which gave her the courage to seek justice. The post also mentioned how her family was forced to settle the case outside and ultimately, no action was taken against him despite his grandfather being an honorable judge.
The post instantly became trending and suddenly, more such posts erupted where many other girls also voiced out Zhi Guanyu’s eve teasing and harassment they had faced. But they were too fearful of his status as a judge’s grandson so they kept quiet.
Zhi Guanyu and his family were at the pit of the hellfire everywhere.
What the hell...?
A chuckle sounded from the other end. "The devil tricked you, Judge Zhi."
