Chapter 189: The ugly truth in the stormy night

As expected of the weather that had cast a dark blanket of clouds in the sky, the late evening in Beijing was filled with the thundering sounds of lightning in the air. Heavy downpour of rain almost made it impossible to make out the roads.

The guards outside Mingshen’s lab were on duty as usual.

"It’s pouring cats and dogs," one guard sighed.

"No kidding. I will pull out the shutters so that there is no leakage anywhere."

"Yeah, please do that."

The hands in the clock struck eleven-thirty at night when Shilin stepped out of the lab. He showed a polite smile to the guards and they asked, "Sir, you want to go back in this weather? You will get stuck midway."

He assured them. "It’s okay. I will be fine. I know a shortcut. Thanks for your concern-"

From the corner of his eye, Shilin noticed a movement from afar as if something was coming towards them. He squinted his eyes and looked closer. "Whose that...?"

The guards also turned their heads and tried to make out the figure.

"....Is it a bicycle?"

The picture got clearer when they really saw a bicycle coming towards the gate with a young kid riding on it in heavy rain.

The second guard frowned. "Who will come here at this late hour? I will check it out."

Shilin said, "Wait a minute. I think I know that boy..."

His eyes then stretched wide. "Xiong Jin."

He asked the guards. "Open the gate. I know that kid."

The gate opened and Jin peddled his way inside, huffing and puffing breathlessly. He was soaking wet from head to toe and chilled from the cold air slapping his body, but he didn’t stop riding.

Shilin then noticed another person leaning on his back covered with a raincoat.

"Jin? What are you doing here?" He asked, taken aback.

"Help..."

Jin burst into tears and grabbed Shilin’s hand. With the last ounce of energy that was left within him, he desperately urged before he passed out.

"Please help Ehuang..."

"Jin? Jin!" Shilin patted his cheeks, trying to wake him up but to no avail. He looked back and checked on Ehuang by slightly lifting the hood of the raincoat.

He froze hard.

He then slowly looked at the guards, who were confused themselves and said, "Take them inside and call Boss right now!"

Jin gradually opened his eyes and the room spun around as if he was falling in some pit deeper and deeper.

"H-He is waking up!"

He heard somebody’s urgent whispers and struggled to open his eyes wider. "Ughh..."

He attempted to move his body and get up but then he heard another voice saying to him, "Stay still, Jin. You have a very high fever. You need to lay down."

Half of the words went outside his understanding. A dull pain enveloped his head and his body felt heavy.

"Ehuang..." he groggily said.

The name jolted the memories within him and he woke up wide awake with a jerk. "Ehuang!"

"Jin, please stay still," Shilin held him down.

"Eh-Ehuang! Ehuang! Ehuang!" Tears rolled down his cheeks.

"Sh-She is here. Don’t worry, Jin," Bojing reassured him. "You b-brought her here, remember? She is here, okay? Boss and sis Zhiyou are a-attending to her."

"Ehuang..." he stared into his eyes as if trying to determine if it was the truth or not.

"Please save her..." he broke down.

Jia sat outside in utmost silence. Her expression was so frosty that anybody would prefer to keep a safe distance from her.

She was suddenly called here in the middle of the night with no explanation. But when she reached the lab, she got a short summary of the situation. She didn’t know the details but it was enough to explode the volcano in her heart. She was having a hard time reigning it in.

Sometime later, Mingshen stepped out of the room and removed his gloves. "She is awake now."

"...Can we talk to her?"

"She is afraid. Deathly afraid and in pain. But yes, we can talk to her. Come inside."

His usual mischievous demeanor was nowhere to be seen. As Jia was about to go in, she saw Shilin and Bojing wheeling Jin in a wheelchair.

Shilin said, reading the question in her eyes, "He is insisting to meet her."

Jia looked in his reddened and fatigued eyes and gently brushed her fingers through his hair. "Come."

"Ehuang...!"

Jin bridged the remaining distance himself and tremblingly held her hand in his. "Ehuang..."

Tears pooled in his eyes yet again as he saw the miserable state she was in. She was covered in dressings and bandages on almost all parts of her body and even through them, he could see how puffed up her face was.

Mingshen cut straight to the chase with a no-nonsense expression. "Who beat you up like that?"

Ehuang was already awake and the question touched the sore part of her heart. She bit her lip hard, her silent tears wetting the pillow below her head. She parted her lips once but then shut them back again, losing all the strength in her.

She wanted to speak but her voice choked up every time. She couldn’t say anything for a long time and simply cried in silence.

"...ad," she whispered inaudibly. "Dad..."

"...Your father?" Jia asked.

She nodded ever so slowly.

"Dad...was...furious. Mom too," she stammered amidst her falling tears and trembling body. "Very angry...at me. I...wasn’t supposed...to talk to boys o-or look at them...I...wasn’t allowed...to like them. But I like...Jin."

Jin lowered his head, tears plopping down on his hands.

"But...Mom...Dad didn’t...like it..." Ehuang blankly said. "Very angry at me...because...I am...not a...good girl...a-anymore. Good girls...don’t mingle with boys..."

There was a long beat of silence.

Mingshen looked at Jin. "How did you bring her here?"

Jin broke down uncontrollably. "I called Ehuang tonight a number of times to talk to her. To know if everything was fine after she returned home. But she didn’t pick up my calls on her original number."

"Original number?" Shilin asked.

"Y-Yes. That’s the phone her parents gave her. But they always strictly monitored her messages and calls. S-so I bought her another phone with my pocket money. Very basic phone and we secretly used to chat on it. They don’t know of this one. She hides it. Ehuang finally picked up my call on the other phone and she..."

He trembled. "She sounded so weak. She couldn’t even talk clearly...I got terrified and dashed out of my home for her house!"
