Chapter 178: Unveiling the masks
*Flashback*
It was late last night when Shilin received some instructions. At first, he couldn’t make heads or tails of it, but he didn’t get any explanation. He didn’t ask either.
Shilin simply did what he was supposed to do and waited to get backside of Wing A.
He heard footsteps a few steps later and through the dim light, he recognized Dong Haoyu. His expression was laced with confusion as he looked at him.
"You called me here right?"
"Yes. There is a way for you to not go to jail."
Dong Haoyu froze hard as if he was dropped right into the Arctic. Before he could delve into it, Shilin gave a crisp version of what Jia was going to do the next day.
"No..."
Dong Haoyu’s eyes looked hopeless. "She figured it out..."
"Indeed. But my Boss has a plan to avoid the unavoidable from happening."
Shilin smiled and raised a box towards him. "Take it."
Bewildered, Dong Haoyu took the box from him which felt heavy. He opened it and was stunned to see a gun inside it.
"This is a..."
"Now listen to me quickly but intently. We cannot slip in any detail."
And so Shilin narrated the entire plan, making the latter part his lips in disbelief.
"It’s a real gun but a fake bullet. You just have to pretend to shoot me. Once you do that, I will replace the fake bullet with a real one before everyone arrives for the police’s evidence. You just have to perfectly do what you have always been doing. Acting."
"But how will this help me? This will put me in even more trouble."
Shilin ever so slightly smiled. "Boss won’t tell you to do this to make matters worse for you. This is your chance. Either take it or leave it."
Dong Haoyu stared at the gun in contemplation. He gave it a long, hard thought.
If this plan could somehow let him be with Chow Mey even for a little longer then he was all in for it.
Meymey...
He didn’t care about himself. But he wanted to be there for Chow Mey, to protect her until he would be sure that nothing would harm her happiness ever again. He would willingly step out of her life.
He clenched the box and looked straight at Shilin. "Okay. I will do this."
"Good. Then move according to what we have decided. And never throw any suspicious gazes or even look at Boss or me after this will be over for the remainder of the trip. Miss. Song is...very sharp in catching these nuances. You cannot give yourself away."
"Got it."
He then hesitantly asked, "Why is Dr. Yang helping a murderer like me?"
Shilin tilted his head. "His definition of a murderer is very different. Ask him yourself if you ever get the chance."
*Flashback ends*
Mingshen smirked as he blew air over his nails. "Ah all’s well that ends well."
"I don’t think it’s so good of an ending for Miss. Song," Shilin commented.
He chuckled. "It’s a happy ending for her too though she will be too unwilling to admit it. Tsk. Like I always say. Cops. Always a bunch of stubborn and pain in the ass people. She is all welcome to wallow in guilt if she wants. I despise such people."
"I thought you adore Miss. Song."
"She is wasting her precious tenacity and energy on protecting law and justice. That’s the single most thing chaining her from her freedom yet she chooses to be shackled. I have no pity for such people."
"I thought you did this to not let Miss. Song take the burden."
Mingshen gave him a look and burst into laughter.
"Donning the police uniform is her choice. I will not protect her so that she can escape from the responsibility of taking tough actions. You chose it so don’t complain now," he shrugged.
Shilin blinked. "So why did you want to help Dong Haoyu this way?"
Mingshen frowned as if it was very obvious. "I like gutsy people. I like people who use their brains to dispose of people like that oldie who should be investing their money for health instead of booking hotel rooms to sleep with a woman of his daughter’s age."
The truth that cut straight into the air rendered it absolutely silent.
Shilin smiled. "Got it. I will take my leave."
He had just turned when Mingshen’s commanding voice stopped him. "Wait." He threw him a calculating smile. "My turn to ask you a question, Mr. Newbie."
Mingshen got up from his royal seat and took slow but imposing steps towards him. That didn’t falter Shilin though.
"Sure, Boss."
"How did you do it?"
"Do what?"
"Back in the horror house of that kiddie amusement park. How did you fool my assistant into believing that your other friend with that bandaid was walking with you all but she was actually in the first tunnel scaring that principal’s daughter?"
Shilin didn’t immediately respond.
"There is some misunderstanding here, Boss."
"Bojing’s observations are never misunderstandings," Mingshen said with a calm poise.
Despite the questions being hammered down upon him, Shilin looked unfazed.
I see. I was only focusing on Miss. Song. But it didn’t occur to me that the first person for Senior Lu to have talked about his suspicion would have been definitely Boss.
An error from my side, Shilin calmly analyzed the root cause of the problem.
Mingshen smiled. "And now that you are a part of my team, let’s make something clear. No gaslighting will be tolerated. Who are we?"
"Doctors."
"What do we do?"
"Practice medicine."
"Which shouldn’t ever have a scope of doubting your own judgment and intuition. Gaslighting clouds our perception and I don’t want my assistant to ever doubt his intuition just because some newbie manipulated him to protect his bandaid friend."
The strong tone hinted at a warning.
Shilin kept his pleasant smile. "Yes, Boss. It won’t happen again."
His black orbs shone with satisfaction. "Good~ Now begin. I am all ears."
