Chapter 527: When you realize you are the center of global conspiracy

I asked carefully, thinking it might trigger Natha, but he looked...the same; like he didn’t care his kind was involved in this atrocity.

"Why does someone try to harm others?" a reply came from the door as Aunt Nezja walked inside the bedroom. "Of course, it’s due to hatred."

"But..." I looked at Natha again, frowning. "Why would a nightmare hate Natha?"

This time, Natha replied himself, chuckling. "I was the son of a traitor, remember?"

"What?!" I slammed my fist on the breakfast tray before I knew it. "But that’s just something those Spectri bastards use to bully you because they’re afraid you’ll become the Lord!"

"Well...it wasn’t just the Spectri who thought that back then," Natha shrugged.

"What..."

"There are nightmares who didn’t want Natha to rise into prominence," Aunt Nejza said. "Nightmares who had been living submissively beneath the Spectri and didn’t want to see anyone live a better life than them, or nightmares who think they are getting suppressed even more because of Natha’s existence..."

My anger, which had subsided somewhat with the help of a delicious breakfast, flared again. "What’s with that?!" my fist raised and struck a pillow, which Panne had placed strategically after he swiftly secured my half-finished breakfast tray. "Is it his fault that he was born with the seed?! Did he ask to have that?! Huh?! How could they blame him for things he didn’t even want?!"

"But I won’t be able to meet you if I don’t have this--"

"You shut up!" I turned and glared at Natha. Was this a leftover anger, or was my hormone still all over the place? I smacked the pillow again. "This is why you always end up blaming yourself!"

"Uhh..."

The Spectre was one thing--I mean, I could understand why they hated Natha, as someone who drove them away from the ruling chair and made it impossible for them to come back. Of course, it was also their karma, a restorative justice of what they had done to Natha. But at least...at least I could understand it.

But I couldn’t understand the kind of inferiority complex that those other nightmares had. They weren’t many in the first place, so shouldn’t they unite themselves even more? Shouldn’t they try to protect Natha instead of joining the forces who crucify him and his father?

I could never forgive the Spectre for their attempt to harm Shwa, but that nightmare...I despised him even more.

"Whatever! This is ridiculous!" I crossed my arms and pursed my lips. "Give me some sugar!"

Panne and Mara immediately scrambled out of the bedroom, and for a few seconds, there was only silence until a chirp broke it.

[Papa angry because Papa hungry?]

And then Natha coughed while holding back his laughter, which made Zia giggle, and then Arta, and suddenly everyone was laughing. "What?!"

"I’m glad you’re okay," Zia said, giggling again as Jade patted my stomach as if calming it would calm my heart.

But I pursed my lips and grumbled. "I’m not okay," I clicked my tongue. "That nightmare is still alive, right?"

I didn’t remember killing that one, because I was determined to find an answer to who they were and why they were doing all of this.

"Yes, but...why, Young Master?" Arta tilted her head. "Are you going to see that person?"

"Of course I will!" I narrowed my eyes in disdain. "I need to at least slap him once before it’s all over."

Zia shifted closer and smiled. "Just once?"

"I said at least," I puffed my cheeks. "I don’t have pet dolphins yet, and I don’t want Vrida to have a stomachache."

Zia gasped, but I could see her eyes sparkling. I had no idea if she was happy about the punishment or because I showed my emotional side openly like this. Amarein, however, held her chest in shock.

"Valen, I don’t remember you being like this..."

Oh, right...the druids were pacifists.

"That nightmare is the information broker who leaked about the shed and Valen’s conditions," Aunt Nezja informed us--was she in charge of interrogation? "He was also the one who devised the infiltration plan."

"There’s this beast that the drows usually use to create tunnels," Amarein said swiftly as if her previous sentence was a lie. "It’s not a picky eater and has tough stomach. Should I borrow them from Ahrat?"

Oh?

"Whoa, whoa, whoa--" Arta raised her hands at the sudden violence galore. "Let’s not do this yet."

We all turned toward her and she added swiftly.

"I mean, we should make sure to get everything from them first before doing anything, okay? It’s just a reminder, that’s all," she shrugged.

"So that’s why I said at least one slap," I shrugged too, and once again, Natha’s muffled laugh could be heard from my shoulder. When I turned to look at him, he raised his head and kissed my jaw.

"You’re amazing," he whispered, and all the anger turned into flusters because heat suddenly rushed into my cheeks as I took the sight of his soft smile.

Nggh--why did he have to be so handsome when he looked messy? How unfair!

"Oh! He returns to normal!" Zia laughed and poked my flushed cheek. I turned to bite her poking finger but damn--she was fast. As revenge, I was going to tackle her down and tickle her side, but my desert breakfast had finally come!

Hmph--I’d spare her for now.

The desert, however, came with Malta and Haikal--who looked like he was about to get down and prostrating or something, so I told Natha to stop the demon. Not in front of my desert, dude.

Anyway, I heard some more detail about the attack from Haikal--it seemed like they were using three kinds of poison attacks to incapacitate the guards. Ah, it was the people I threw out using the trees. It turned out that they were a group of notorious underworld crime group that Natha and some of the vassals had taken care of in the past.

"Umm...so..."

I pondered while savoring my cake. This gangster-like group, the fallen Lord and his supporter, the nightmare with a superior inferiority complex, and the Spectre that formed the attack force...

"So...they are like...the leftover people who had a grudge against us?"

"Against me, sweetheart," Natha said while wiping some cream off the corner of my lips. "Except for Zir’Kal, maybe."

Tsk--this was why Natha would be a hundred percent blaming himself. I was proud of myself for stopping that train of thought quickly. Of course, we should be blaming the one who did this! Screw their reasoning! All of them were banished and exiled as a consequence of their own actions, so why were they blaming Natha instead? Stupid demons!

That being said, I had to admit that they were the closest to ever put us in real danger. If I didn’t have the crown--if Tsalinade didn’t get the crown--I wouldn’t have a way to face the Spectre, since the place was too disadvantageous for Ignis to go all out. The timing was just...

"But...how do they know about our condition?" I bit my spoon, and suddenly the air felt heavy with tension. It felt even more ominous than the time we were talking about the attack itself. As stupid as I was, the answer came immediately to me since there was only one anyway. "A spy? Spies?"

Malta, who was in charge of internal business, looked as if someone just doused her in tar. Her dark skin and eyes seemed to grow darker. "We’re still...trying to figure it out."

"Oh, okay..."

It must have been a big blow for someone as strict as her, even more than Haikal. The Castle staffing was part of her job, after all, and while she didn’t show it outside, her loyalty to Natha was on par with Caba.

"I’ll make sure to get them as soon as possible," her stern voice sounded like a knife.

Well, I was glad the knife would be pointed at our enemies instead.

"They must have planned this for a long time, huh?" I put my spoon down and took a pastry with my hand. "I mean...the timing is just too perfect. They must have waited for you to go away, right?"

Natha exhaled heavily before nodding. "The communication was blocked in the Red Fortress, but initially, we only thought it was because they were trying to poison the Lord of Wrath."

"Huh?" my pastry came to a halt in front of my mouth. "The Lord of Wrath was poisoned?"

"Yes," Natha frowned. "I came back only because I don’t feel good being cut off from you. I didn’t think the real attack was at home."

I blinked when he said the ’real’ attack. "You mean...those are connected?"

"As you said, Young Master," Arta shrugged. "The timing is just too perfect."

But taking advantage of the war like that...I mean, the one who would be benefited the most from poisoning the Lord of Wrath would be the humans, right? Risking that just to get at us seemed excessive no matter what, unless they were in colussion with the humans.

Wait.

Would that be so impossible? If they were part of the faction against Natha, they wouldn’t care about the Realm of Wrath, which was basically our ally, right?

I raised my head and blinked my widened eyes. "Whoa...it’s global."
