Chapter 507: What’s the use of having money if we can’t squander it?

"Bassinet?" Uncle Sol raised his brow.

Yep. That was my grand mission of coming all the way to the other side of L’Anaak Eed; to ask the Grandmaster of the Magic Tower to make a little bed for my unborn baby.

Why, you ask?

Well, because our dear inventors couldn’t make a freaking bassinet, that was why!

Ahem--to be fair, I did ask for a lot of features, so they felt overwhelmed by it. It seemed that fitting all of the functions and magic formations that I requested was beyond their capabilities. They said their expertise lay in adapting modern Earth technology to this world of swords and magic, which was...dodgy? Did bassinet not exist on modern Earth?

But Zia whispered to me that they just didn’t want me to go ballistic on them when the product was not as I envisioned.

Ahem.

It seemed that witnessing my severe mood swings and tantrums scared them a bit.

Phew. Fine then, I just needed to order a custom-made bassinet and ask Lesta to carve the functions that I liked--was what I thought at first.

Nuh-uh. Because behind a husband who came home from work on time, there was a hard-working sleep-deprived staff taking care of his workload instead. Tehe.

Uh-huh. It was Lesta who kept Natha’s life and work balance, staying in the Realm of Wrath and going around the other regions as his proxy. He spent so much time outside the Castle that Eruha was fed up and followed him around in the end so he could quench his thirst and his thirst--if you know what I mean.

So, I had no engineers and no magic connoisseurs to build the centerpiece of the nursery--because what was the use of a nursery without a bassinet?

When I told Natha about this, he said I could go to the Grandmaster. I gasped--because I had this thought that we should only do this within the inner circle. I mean...the other stuff we needed--new wallpapers and carpets, new furniture, or even the construction--could be chalked up to regular renovation, but not a whole bassinet.

But Natha said we could trust the Grandmaster, and that was how I came to Uncle Sol.

"Yes, a bassinet," I smiled and pulled back from the table so I could enjoy my tea.

Uncle Sol leaned back on his chair and crossed his arms. He didn’t say anything for a while, probably in the middle of connecting the dots. Natha did say he would figure out what happened sooner or later, since he was involved with creating Shwa’s little shed garden.

When he opened his eyes again, he didn’t say or ask anything about who it would be. "It must be a special one if you come to me."

Well, duh. I took out a scroll and slid it to him as if it were a grocery list. There was a drawing of a frame and a list of functions I would like to be embedded, including an automatic barrier, thermal regulator, insect repellant, security alarm, air purifier, and mana absorber--among other things. Oh, of course, monitoring signals connected to a device that I and Natha could take around.

His brow arched higher the more he read the list, and he took half a minute to press his lips and laugh silently. "Quite the bassinet," he said after clearing his throat.

Naturally.

"I understand why you come to me," he rolled the scroll once again and tied it. "I would say this is going to be mighty expensive--I mean, the material cost alone..." he paused, now openly chuckling. "But then again, I’m talking to the Lord Consort of Greed."

Ahem--I picked up my teacup and shrugged.

What else would I use our money if not for our child?

"Do I have a deadline?"

Oh, sounded like agreement. But honestly, I had no idea when Shwa would be born, how many more times would the flower bloom, or if it would bloom in a fixed interval. But I couldn’t really say that, and even if I knew, I didn’t think it was good to tell people when my child would arrive.

"I would be grateful if you could put it in your priority," I said.

"Priority, huh?" Uncle Sol curled his lips, showing up a few fine wrinkles. "My priority card is more expensive than this whole list."

I flicked my gaze through the teacup, and he laughed. "Just letting you know."

"So?"

He rubbed the small scroll in his hand, perhaps feeling the sealing spell I put on it. It could only be opened by the second person who touched the scroll--meaning him. Just from that, he should understand how secretive this project should be.

As Uncle Sol was contemplating about it, I sipped my tea with anticipation. As the Head of the Magic Tower, he wasn’t exactly under the Lord’s authority, so even if he rejected it, there wouldn’t be much consequences.

And honestly, I wouldn’t pressure him if he didn’t want to. It just meant I had to wait until Lesta and Eruha came back, and probably ask Aina and her partner to make the frame instead. A magic bassinet was not enough to make an enemy out of the Magic Tower.

"Very well," fortunately, he gave a positive reply. "Just expect a very large bill."

"...by whose standard?" my excited ass smirked.

Maybe I had finally gotten used to Natha’s wealth.

His laughter filled the room as I asked Panne to take out the contract we had prepared beforehand. After more discussion, we decided on his service fee--and he was right, it was massive, bigger than the whole renovation--as well as scheduled an interim report during the material gathering and the making process.

After we were done with the contract, I stayed a bit longer to talk about random things with him, and learned about making the magic fireworks from him together with Jade.

Since we were already outside anyway, we visited a confectionary store on the way home and restocked Jade’s candy stash. Oh, how hard it was to tell the owner that no, please don’t give us free stuff. Why would they give me free stuff anyway? Shouldn’t they ask me to buy even more?

But it was a nice gesture and put me in a good mood. I told Panne to bring the carriage around and pass the amusement park to see the people coming and going. People were skeptical and confused at first, but with news traveling through mouths and the papers, more curious ones visited, especially the younger ones.

Funnily enough, Uncle Sol told me that a lot of magicians visited the place to observe the magic formations used in the operation, but became addicted to the rides. Come for the research stay for the fun, I guess. I bet the place would be more crowded after the exam period was over.

Ah...summer!

"Will there be a festival in the summer?" I asked Panne on the way back.

"Not usually, Young Master," he paused to ponder for a bit. "A lot of stores and guilds make their own events in the summer, so the Castle does not provide any big events so as to not crowd the calendar."

Hmm...I did recall the festival I visited last year was held to substitute for the New Year festival delayed by the peak of the war in Wrath. Ugh--I couldn’t believe another one was already on the horizon after only a year.

"That’s too bad..." I muttered. "I wanted to go around with Natha and Jade."

[With Jade! Jade not in festival last year!]

"That’s right," I patted the little bird perching on the windowsill. "Jade was too small back then."

[Jade grow now!] the little bird jumped into my lap, looking up with adorable beady eyes. [Can’t we have festival, Papa?]

Hmm...summer without a festival would be boring, wouldn’t it? But I wasn’t sure about going to another company’s event--not in my current state. Not only Natha, but even the vassals would tell me it was too dangerous.

But it was truly too bad. The summer festival was where we had our first kiss, and I would like it if we could reenact that moment; kissing under the fireworks and floating lanterns.

And this time, without an angry bald demon disturbing us.

"Young Master, don’t you have a perfect place for a festival?" Panne gestured toward the window.

I tilted my head in confusion at first, but then the carriage went uphill and I could see the amusement park from the window. I gasped with Jade, and we looked at each other with widened eyes.

"We can do that?!"

"Why can’t you?" Panne gave me a rare smile. "You’re the owner of the park."

Am I? Yes--yes, I am!

"Panne, you’re a genius!" I laughed and exclaimed as Jade excitedly patted the demon’s head.

"Shall I proceed with the plan?"

"Yes, please!" I clapped my hands, jumping a bit on my seat. "Oh, please talk to Zia and my inventor friends--they should have some ideas to go about it."

"Understood."

"Oh, oh--can we have a parade too? Make sure there are fireworks and lanterns. I think some music show would be good--oh, what about plays? They said there are plays in the spring, but I couldn’t go to any because of the wedding..."

"We can do everything you want to do, Young Master," my valet-cum-secretary said. "I’m sure His Lordship would be delighted."

"You think so?" I giggled, feeling excited about telling Natha all about it. I had to make sure he would free up his schedule for at least one day, so we could redo our disturbed kiss that night!

I kept giggling with Jade on the way home, talking about what we wanted to have at the festival. It was quite wild that I no longer had any qualms about squandering Natha’s money like this, so I could proudly say that I had become a true consort of greed. Mm, yes!

I skipped through the hallway to the Lord’s Quarter, dancing with Jade, hoping Natha would go back quickly.

But before Natha could go through the door, Heraz arrived on the living room’s balcony.

With a letter from my human friends in his hand.
