Chapter 506: Renovation is fun if you have lots of funds
"I’m sorry, sweetheart...even though I said this is my part," Natha stroked my face with a face full of guilt and regret.
But I shook my head readily. "Mm-mm, it’s fine," I hugged his neck and kissed him goodbye. "Protecting our child is also your part."
He kissed me once again afterward, before going out with Caba and Lesta. Again. It seemed like making sure the Wrath wouldn’t get pushed back couldn’t be done by relaxing in the Lord Castle with me while designing our future nursery.
Oh, well--this one I didn’t really mind. At the end of the day, Natha would just agree with anything I said or wanted about the nursery anyway. All I needed to do was discussing it with Arta and Aunt Nezja. Zia also pinched in some ideas when he came over from time to time, although she spent most of her time in the research tower.
Heh. To think she was once crying to me because she had no idea what to do with the feeling of having a first crush.
"Let’s use bright colors, Young Master! Whether it’s a boy or girl, bright colors are always great for a child’s development!" Arta said while slamming a stack of large folders on the table.
Ah, we were choosing wallpapers this time.
Looking at her sparkling eyes and those big folders, I couldn’t help but recall the days of my wedding preparation days. Especially those days of choosing fabrics for the outfits and flowers for the decorations.
I glanced at Aunt Nezja and she nodded wordlessly while having her tea and reading her book. Alright, that was an agreement. At this kind of thing, she only spoke when she did not agree on something--which was half better than Angwi.
Talking about Angwi...Zia said our head maid would visit soon so a nursery could be built in the Lair too.
Well...that was nice, actually. I reckoned I would take Shwa back and forth between the Castle and the Lair--and who knew if Natha would keep being the Lord for that long. The only reason he kept his job after he found me was because he couldn’t trust anyone with the job, and unfortunately, since we still had to live here--considering our Lair was still part of the realm of Greed--we couldn’t just let the place became unconducive for Shwa’s future.
Anyway, despite the sense of deja vu, it was way more fun and exciting than the wedding business. Perhaps because it wasn’t that complicated, and there was no need to make it flawless.
"We can just rip it off and change it later if you don’t like the finished result," was what Arta said.
Such a rich people’s thing to say.
Oh, wait--it was my money being used.
Ah, but I found out renovating was truly fun. I couldn’t look at the furniture sample myself, but Arta brought me the catalogs, and it was fun looking through everything. Sometimes I looked at them with Jade while waiting for Natha to come back in the evening, and sometimes Jade would ask Natha to put this or that from the catalogs in our little bird’s bedroom.
It was fascinating seeing Natha teasing the little bird first before agreeing. Such a mischievous demon.
"Stop relieving your stress on Jade," I smacked him playfully, to which he only replied with a kiss full of grin.
"Can’t be helped," he shrugged. "I’m spending my days with lumps of muscles, so I need some healing."
"By being naughty?"
"By looking at adorable things," he squeezed my cheeks, still with a grin plastered on his face.
Well, at least he didn’t look as tired as that first night.
"So, how far has the nursery plan go?" he asked while pulling me closer under the blanket.
"Pretty good," I nodded. "We’re choosing wallpapers today and..."
"And?"
I turned my body around to face him. "Umm...can I ask you something?"
"Of course?" he raised his head and propped it against the pillow while laying sideways.
Mmh--don’t get distracted, Valen!
I pulled his night robe to close his chest from my sight. "Would you be uncomfortable...if we decorate it like your nursery?"
"Mine?" Natha blinked. "In my old house?"
"Yeah..."
"Hmm..."
I looked at him nervously, waiting for a sign of discomfort or anger. His old house was burned, and the second one drenched in blood--certainly, it wouldn’t be a source of a happy memory.
But I couldn’t get rid of the idea while thinking about a mini-Natha running around this place. Rather than discarding the idea completely because I was worried he’d feel uncomfortable, I decided to ask him first.
If he didn’t like the idea, then I would be able to move on to another one without any burden.
So far though, I didn’t see any agitation in his face.
Finally, he opened his mouth. "I don’t mind it, but..."
I gulped, waiting with a thumping heart.
"I don’t even remember what it was like," he shrugged.
"Oh, Aunty knows!" I said with a sense of relief, but I decided to ask again to make sure. "So...we can?"
"If you want..." he sealed the agreement with a smile and a soft pat on my cheek. "Why, though?"
"Just," I shrugged. Scooting closer so our face nearly touched, I whispered with a little giggle. "Because I want Shwa to look like you?"
Natha snorted--not unaffectionately. He seemed to be coming to the idea of having a child that looked like him. Of course, we wouldn’t be able to know until the day Shwa was born, so it was just for fun, honestly. Like he said, we would love Shwa no matter how the child ended up looking like.
"What about your nursery?" Natha asked while brushing my hair back.
"Oh, I don’t think I have one," I shook my head slightly before laying on his arm. "I mean...there’s no way I’ll remember it too, but I also think there’s nothing special about it."
Considering how my parents were...they wouldn’t go out of their way to make a nursery. Probably just using one of the empty rooms and putting a bassinet as well as a baby monitor there. Decorations were out of the question, much less colorful wallpaper.
"It was probably just a normal room with white walls and some furniture from a Swedish store or something," I shrugged.
"Pfft--" Natha buried his laughter in my hair, shoulder visibly shaking. But he got hold of himself pretty quickly and raised his head to face me with a solemn expression. "I’m sorry."
"It’s okay," I laughed. I didn’t think a lot of babies in modern Earth had the privilege of a cute nursery built just for them anyway.
Making a baby room was not cheap, you know?
"Alright, you can do it if you want," Natha gave me another affirmation.
"Yaay!" I exclaimed joyfully. "Oh!"
"Yes?"
"Umm...there’s a bit of a problem?" I looked at him with a grin.
Natha smiled and replied relaxedly like the rich problem solver that he was. "Tell me."
"So, here’s the thing..."
* * *
"If it isn’t the Lord Consort," the Head of the Magic Tower greeted me with a smile.
[Uncle fireworks!]
"Uncle!" I pursed my lips. From the twinkle in his otherwise dull, sleep-deprived eyes, I knew he was teasing me.
He knew very well that I didn’t like the stifling title--especially not by those I considered close to me.
"Forgive me," he chuckled while moving away from his desk and led me to a tea table near the only window that existed within his office--no wonder he looked like an office worker with twenty hours of shift a day. "It’s been a while since I’ve last seen you, Young Master. It’s tempting.
Hmm...maybe this mischievous side was what made him and Natha have a pretty good relationship.
"I’m sorry that I can’t go to the Castle myself," he said. "It’s an exam period, so I’ve been busy with grading."
Oh, as expected. The Magic Tower acted as an academy for the magicians, after all, and I heard the annual examination happened in the summer.
"It’s okay, I’m the one who needs help after all," I shrugged. I could have waited until the exam period was over, but it meant waiting until the fall. I decided then that I could just go to the Magic Tower rather than idly waiting. "And it’s been a while since I got out."
Yeah...the last time I got out was when Natha had my late birthday party in the Amusement Park. It had been opened to the public a few days later, but I hadn’t visited again since my mood swings were bad and Natha was busy.
And honestly...I didn’t feel good being too far away from Shwa without a good reason.
So, when I had a good reason, might as well use it to change the pace a bit. Aunt Nezja said it was not good for me to hole up too much in the Lord’s quarters anyway.
And so, here we are!
"So, to what do I owe this honor of your rare appearance?" Uncle Sol asked after sending a few firebirds chasing Jade around the office.
"Uncle," I leaned forward and lowered my voice. "Can you make me a bassinet?"
