Chapter 486: a magical place for a magical deed
When I jumped off Vrida’s back, I didn’t say anything and immediately hugged the husband who had been away from me the entire afternoon.
Was it because of what we were going to attempt? I want to cling to him so much, and just these few hours already made me feel suffocated. All I wanted to do was bury my face in his chest and feel his cold temperature seeping into my heated skin. When I felt his hands on my head and back, I hugged him tighter, and let out a long, relieved sigh.
"Your aunt is still here," he whispered.
Ack! I pushed Natha away in reflex, although in hindsight, Amarein had seen me being clingy to Natha a lot, so there was no need to get flustered. Still, it was kind of embarrassing doing that in front of your older family member.
"Don’t mind me," she chuckled and walked toward Vrida, who lowered her head in a greeting. "I had finished setting up the isolation barrier, so no one would be able to approach this spot."
"T-thank you, Aunty..." I smiled awkwardly.
I mean...how could I not? I was basically asking my aunt to make a smokescreen while I was shagging in the wild with my husband.
"Can I borrow your wyvern for a bit? There’s somewhere I need to go to," she continued, stroking Vrida’s cheek. "I think it’ll be better than letting her wait for you outside."
"Oh, I’ll be grateful if you do that!" I clasped my hands. On the way here, I was wondering what should I do with Vrida. Making her wait outside sounded cruel, but I also couldn’t let her roam around in the night. I forgot at that time that Amarein was also here to check on things.
Oh, right! Checking on things!
"Is everything alright here?" I looked around, but of course, the meticulous Natha wouldn’t let anything past his supervision. Hmm...the mana at the converging point also seemed strong.
"Yes, everything’s alright," Natha patted my head, before leading my gaze to the source of the buzzing sound beside him.
--even without any interpreter, I knew what they wanted already, and took out three small pouches. Prior to coming here, I had prepared the fabulous Gluttony candies and broke them into hundreds of small pieces. Thinking that it would be hard for the fairies if I put the candy inside a jar, I placed them in three pouches with a preservation spell in them.
The moment I took out the pouches, the fairies immediately buzzed around me like manic flies. For a bit, I was worried that this payment would change something for these fairies. I just hoped I didn’t accidentally turn three fairies into addicts.
"There you go," I let the fairies hang on each of their pouches. "Thank you for your help all this time."
They swirled around once more and...headbutted me. Oh, it seemed that they were giving me a kiss.
"I’ll take them too," Amarein reached out her hand and called the fairies over. "I’ll drop them in the settlement to play with Jade."
"He’d like that," I nodded. "Thank you again, Aunty."
She smiled and for a while, just looked at me wordlessly; cupping my face and stroking my cheeks with her thumb.
"Good luck, my dear," she whispered, and gave me a kiss on the forehead, just like the fairies. "I know you’ll do well, but the best of luck."
"Thank you..."
It was kind of weird being cheered on for--ahem--making babies, but I guess...for some people, conceiving did not come easy, even for women with wombs. It would probably be impossible for me if it was an ordinary conceiving, even with the dryad blood in me.
And honestly, I could use as much luck as I could have.
Vrida also nuzzled me before departing with Amarein and the fairies, and after watching them disappear into the night sky, it was just the two of us.
Hmm...for some reason, I felt bashful.
"Let’s have some dinner first," Natha said, thankfully, calming my flustered heart. I followed him and--
"Oh!" I gasped, staring at the crackling fire and the meat skewer around it. "A barbeque! A campfire!"
Natha laughed as I walked swiftly to the small stool near the fire and eagerly sat there, waiting for the meat and fish. "Your eyes are sparkling. Do you like it that much?"
"Of course! This is one of my bucket list! Isn’t this what adventurers do?"
"Generally, I prefer to spend the night in an inn, or just eat something quickly and find a hidden place without attracting wildlife, but I guess it was because I usually traveled alone," Natha shrugged. "But you really like this kind of thing, huh?"
"I mean...when I read this kind of thing in books, it just sounded so fun..." I scratched my cheek in embarrassment. I guessed it was rather childish to see something like this as fun.
But Natha curled his lips. "I’m glad I put this on, then."
I blinked repeatedly, and saw him taking off his coat. Inside, rather than his usual formal shirt and vest, he had a cotton shirt and leather armor--which made me gasp.
No way...
I clasped my mouth because I felt like I was going to let out a shameful moan. Oh my, oh my. It really was my birthday.
"Thank you..." I whispered unconsciously. For who, I didn’t know. Perhaps for the Gods who created such a fine specimen to be my husband.
"Are you drooling because of the food or because of me?" he asked with a twinkle in his eyes.
I swallowed hard before answering. "Both?"
"Good; I don’t need to work hard to turn you on, then."
Sir, you turn me on simply by existing.
* * *
I looked up and stared at the clear night sky, and the full moon greeting us unperturbed. Wow...was this premeditated too? Was it part of the fate so we would be showered by moonlight?
It was magical in a non-scenic way. Like...truly magical.
I hadn’t been here during the night of a full moon, so I didn’t know the converging point could be boosted this strongly just by the addition of the full moon. It was like the converging point in that small island and the moon was pulling at each other. It created a small spot very dense in mana that vampires might get mana poisoning if they stood inside it.
"Almost like a stage, huh?" Natha said as he stared at the small island with a single tree on it. "Or should I say an altar?"
"An altar..."
That seemed appropriate, although embarrassing.
Natha glanced at his pocket watch and offered his hand. "Shall we?"
Suddenly, I felt so self-conscious and nervous. With heart drumming in my chest, I took his hand and together, we stepped into the shallow pool. No, we didn’t use the teleport; it felt kind of disrespectful to use it somehow. As we walked across, the fog started to creep on the surface, as if trying to keep our dignity for the later activity.
"This is reminding me of the trial," I whispered.
"I guess the stake is just as high," Natha said, gripping my hand. "I’m also just as afraid as that time."
"You are?"
I turned to look at his visage, and I could see his hard profile; the stiff jaw and rigid eyes.
Ah, he was nervous too...
Realizing it made me feel...less nervous, actually. "But this time, I walk together with you," I gripped his hand back. "This time we’re doing it together."
A smile crept onto his face at last, and the coldness receded a tad bit from his hand. As if entering a spotlight, we climbed onto the moonlight-showered island, and I approached the tree immediately. Taking a deep breath, I took out Shwa from the black pendant, and placed the seed among the roots, which squirmed slightly to create a cradle around it.
"Wait a bit, yeah?" I stroked the black surface, and even though there was no vibration or a voice in my head, I could feel the pulse of a waiting soul inside.
After taking another deep breath, I turned around and looked at Natha, who was still half in the water while looking around, perhaps making sure there really was no one and nothing that could disturb us later. His sharp, silver eyes akin to the showering moonlight caught my gaze, and I almost lost my breath.
It was weird; we joked about getting aroused and everything before, but now, it just felt solemn. There was no lust tingling my body, but I was shuddering all the same.
Before realizing it, my feet had brought me to the edge, holding his face for a kiss. A soft one, where we could confirm each other conviction for what we were about to do. What we were about to face. His arms found their way around my waist, and I slid off the land as I pulled myself closer to him, entering the foggy water. Gently, he sat me on top of the surfacing roots, and my fingers traveled to the collar of his shirt as I whispered back.
"Let me undress you."
