Chapter 473: when you have two bodies, things become complicated
"Your birthday?" Natha had the same surprised expression as mine when I told him later before dinner.
Patting the drowsy boy on my lap, I nodded in reply.
"So...instead of a birthday party, we’re going to do that life-threatening process?" he frowned.
Ah...
I looked at the scowl above his eyes; the palpable disapproval across his face. Earlier, I kind of thought it was a present for me, but it was clear that he was thinking otherwise.
Life-threatening, huh...
Technically, he was right. But I had stopped thinking about the dangerous aspect because childbearing was always difficult no matter what. Besides, the Queen still gave birth to several children--including my grandmother--and survived.
"Isn’t that why we’re looking for the best day?" I smiled while caressing Jade’s hair. "So it will be less life-threatening."
Natha closed his eyes and took a deep, deep breath. I let him calm himself while singing a lullaby for Jade. A soft snoring sound filled the room when Natha finally took a seat beside me and leaned his head on mine.
"I just don’t think it’s alright for you to have to go through that during your birthday," he said softly, almost in a defeated tone.
"I never think of it as some...hard endeavor, you know?" I nudged his head with mine. "If anything, it has become one of my biggest wishes in life."
"I know," Natha let out a sigh.
It must have been complicated for him. He knew it was important for the world, and he knew I wanted it. But in his mind, it was also very dangerous and probably painful for me to bear. He would prefer it if I didn’t have to bear the risk, but he also wanted to meet our child, and knew how important that child was to this world.
His deep, long, sigh told me all about it.
"Just believe in me, honey," I turned my head to kiss his temple. "Let’s believe in fate that brought us to this."
He straightened his back and looked at me seriously. "The fate brought us together to birth a vessel," he frowned. "Who’s to say it won’t throw us away once we do it? Who’s to say it won’t grind you through a painful process?"
"But then, it will throw us out together, won’t it?" I raised my marked hand and grinned. "And I’m used to painful processes, so once more won’t defeat me."
"You shouldn’t have to get used to it," he grumbled, but his tone was more sulky than angry, so it was rather adorable.
I laughed and gave him a soft peck on his scowling lips. "But I already did, and I--no, we want this anyway. So let’s just do our best, mm?"
He looked at me silently for a few seconds, before finally chuckling and shaking his head in defeat. "Ah, I really can’t win when it comes to you..."
"This is not a competition, though?"
He laughed and tilted his head, leaning closer until I could see my own reflection in the silver eyes. "Well, I was already lost the moment you called me ’honey’."
I hiccuped. Blinking. Feeling a heat rushing to my cheeks. "I...I did?"
"Try to do it again," he whispered; very alluring, very seductive, but my lips found themselves pressed tight as if there was glue between them.
Holding Jade tight in my arms, I stood up abruptly and ran away to the stairs. "I...I n-need to put Jade in his bed!"
"Come on...don’t run away, sweetheart," Natha laughed while following me upstairs.
Ack! Couldn’t he just let me escape? Couldn’t he see how embarrassed I was?
"Sush! You’ll wake him up!"
"Pfft--you know he won’t wake up even if there’s a quake," he smirked and pulled me away from Jade’s bed. "It’s just a word, sweetheart--can’t you do it for me?"
Mmh!!
"N-not here..." I bit my lips. Calling him something other than his name felt so...intimate. I didn’t think I could afford to do it in a place other than our safe haven.
"Oh? That got me excited..."
"Sush!"
I elbowed him on the ribs and ran away again, this time to the bedroom--despite the servants already starting to bring out our dinner. His laugh followed me all the way, and my reflection in the vanity desk’s mirror was just...red.
He stroked that beet-red cheek of mine and spoke teasingly. "I’m waiting."
Would it be possible for humans to build an on-and-off button for shame because...why was it so hard?
"Umm..."
Whew...was this how Jade felt when Natha asked to be called by his name?
"Uhh..." I peeked at his expectant, sparkling eyes that were akin to a moon in a bright winter sky. "Ho...honey?"
"Haa..." he closed his eyes and let out a satisfied sigh that embarrassed me further. "Ahh...music; music to my ear."
"Stop that," I clasped his mouth, but he just went on to kiss my fingers and made me cup his face.
"Alright, let’s do our best," he said while nuzzling my palm. "Let’s make it so you can go through everything without pain."
I clasped his face and kissed him on the lips. Right. That’s right. This was Natha that I knew.
"Your birthday, huh--it’s too bad, but...oh, well..."
Too bad...? Why did it feel different from his concern about my safety earlier? It’s as if...
"Umm...Nat?"
"Yeah?"
"Did you--do you actually...have something planned for my, umm, birthday?"
He looked at me with innocent eyes. "Obviously?"
Oh...
Oh! So that was why the twins and Eriha had an awkward expression earlier? Was it because of this?!
"Oh, I’m sorry..."
"It’s not a big deal," he shrugged. "We just need to change the schedule a bit later, once you’re stabilized and in good health."
"Okay!"
"But isn’t it good that you have the same birthday as Valmeier? It’ll be a bit complicated if you don’t," he chuckled and kissed my cheek, holding my hand to lead me outside again for our dinner.
But I stopped in my tracks.
"I...do?" I blinked and tried to think. "Do we?"
"Hmm? Do you what?" Natha turned around and looked at me confusedly.
"I mean...do I have the same birthday as Valmeier?"
Natha blinked and slowly, his eyes widened. "You mean...you don’t know?"
"...do you?"
"No...?"
Oh. Oh, we had a problem.
* * *
Amarein’s letter came the next day, and more or less stated the same thing as D’Ara, along with the confirmation that the converging spot was still there.
Which was fine and all if it wasn’t because of the new emerging problem.
Yeah; was I and Valmeier shared the same birthday?
Sure, we had the same face and technically the same soul; could say we had the same grandparents too. But until these days, I didn’t know what Valmeier’s parents looked like--and frankly, I didn’t really remember what my own parents looked like. Even if they somehow had identical souls just like our grandfathers, there was no guarantee that we were also born on the same day.
What if one of us was a case of premature birth while the other wasn’t? Who knew what kind of complications my mother had with carrying a druid baby when she was a pure human?
And yeah--here, grandma’s child was Valmeier’s mother, but over there, her child was my father so...
See? It was already different from there.
If it was anything else, we might just think--oh, who cares if you had a different birthday! But no; not with this case, and certainly not with Natha’s personality.
If doing it during the date of birth was paramount to my safety, he would pursue it.
The problem was, while the soul had become wholly me, this body still followed Valmeier’s chart. The date this body came out of the birth canal and manifested as a complete living being was the date we should adhere to. Even if it differed for just one day, Natha wouldn’t have it.
Well...of course, personally, I also wanted the highest chance of success.
And this was how I found out Natha could call Heraz with one token and had the shapeshifter standing on our balcony a few hours later.
What kind of creatures did he need to shift into so he could come over that fast, I wonder--which reminded me that I should learn how to fuse with a bird too, sometimes.
Got to coddle Jade first so the child wouldn’t get jealous.
But anyway!
"My Lord," Heraz was kneeling with bowed head as usual.
"Have you found the place where the blind nun resides?" I asked. "Did she have the priest’s journal or anything related to Val...my father?"
Thankfully, he came with good news. "Yes, Young Master," he nodded. "I had given the information and relayed the journal to the human called Jin."
Natha scoffed, and I was tempted to smack him. Oh, geez--we were already married, my Lord! Who cared if someone had a crush on me? He’d forget about it once he met another person his type during his adventure--which I reckoned was still the beginning.
I cleared my throat and asked him again. "What about...my father? Anything? Any trace?"
Heraz bowed deeper. "Pardon me, Young Master. I am still in the middle of searching for it. Unfortunately, we were not given permission to look into the journal, so we couldn’t derive any information from it."
"Ah, so we have to meet with the Hero, then?"
This time, Natha clicked his tongue instead of scoffing. "Can’t we just meet that nun?"
"Oh, pardon me, my Lord. The nun was currently making a journey to meet the Hero."
"So...we still need to meet him, then?"
Again, Natha was clicking his tongue.
