Chapter 468: of course, it’s always a good moment to discuss about your future child
"Hehe..."
I covered my mouth without succeeding in stopping the giggle that had been coming out every time the memory of those wonderful three days was replaying randomly. Three days of Natha taking control and doing everything I wanted him to do to me before I even needed to ask...
Aaah...superb!
"I don’t know what to feel about that giggle of yours," Natha laughed as he led me by my other hand.
"Why? I feel good," I laughed and hugged his arm. "Or are you disappointed that you can’t remember it?"
"Hmm...kind of," he chuckled. "Three days went just like that, without me remembering, even though this is a precious time when we can be together without anyone around. It’s kind of unfair, don’t you think?"
I bit my lips and glanced up, whispering as if someone could hear us. "Should we...prolong it?"
Natha curled his lips and shrugged. "I don’t mind, but your child would."
Oh...right--already I could picture Jade wailing and screaming ’Papa! Papa!’ and throwing a tantrum in the Lair. Zia and Angwi would have a hard time calming the little bird if we stretched it for more than a day.
Besides, I couldn’t possibly ask for the Lord to be away for more than a week, right? Not to mention, he had also taken himself out of work since the day of the wedding, so...
Regrettably, we still had to come back the day after tomorrow.
Oh, well. Better used the time we still had, then!
Which was why we were walking through the woods in the evening. The sky had darkened after I finished a long hot bath while being pampered by an endlessly-feeling-guilty Natha. But that did not stop me from the desire to explore the island.
I mean...into the dark woods with just the two of us? Surrounded by fireflies and glowing moss flanking our path? Sticking close together with a warm glowing lantern in his hand?
What could be more romantic than that?
Okay, there are a lot more, but still...
"Is there a ghost here?" I whispered while looking around the dark forest. But honestly, even the dark forest here looked gentler than the forest around the Lair on a sunny day.
"Do you wish there will be?" Natha chuckled.
"It’ll be a nice story," I giggled. "I can try to scare Jade with it."
"What a bad papa," Natha laughed as if he wasn’t the one who teased my little bird the most.
"But Jade is so adorable while being scared," I giggled recalling the chubby cheeks trembling at the beady eyes shaking. It was particularly adorable when Jade tucked its head beneath its wings. It was also cute when Jade frowned and puffed its cheeks in anger...
I gasped and turned my head to look at Natha. "Could it be...did you like teasing Jade so much because of the cute reaction too?"
Natha curled his lips as he glanced at me. "I like your reaction too."
"Hey!"
The empty path was filled with his laughter as we continued our journey through the woods, toward the sound of water further down the road. The dense trees prohibited me from seeing a glimpse of the waterfall, but I could hear it loud and clear, getting louder the more we walked.
Finally, after walking in the dark for about fifteen minutes, we freed ourselves from it. Unfortunately, there were no ghosts, just fireflies following us to the waterfall like intrigued observers. But wow--what a waterfall!
"It’s huge! It’s bigger than the one in the druid settlement!"
And it was tall too! Too bad that the trees around our cabin were also tall, so I couldn’t see the waterfall from there. But I guessed there was beauty in having such scenery hidden, because otherwise, I wouldn’t bring my lazy ass all the way here, just enjoying the view from the patio.
"It’s a nice waterfall during the day, but it’s even better at night, in my opinion," Natha said as we approached the lake. It was so clear that I could see the bottom of the lake, where colorful stones covered the ground. Each stone was shining with different colors and made the lake look like it was made of rainbow. "The stones absorbed the sunlight by the day and reflect it by the night."
"Whoa..."
Truly, there was nothing I could say but ’whoa’. It looked like colorful lamps were lighting up beneath the water’s surface, and it was just...magical. The lake was shallow enough for me to put my arm inside and pick up a glowing stone. The stone, however, stopped glowing and became a regular red-colored stone once I took it out of the water.
"It only glows when in contact with water," Natha explained. "I’m intrigued to take it back for the pond, but I reckoned it will take away the magic of this place."
"Yeah," I nodded and carefully put the stone back where it belonged. "Let’s not disturb the place. We can just come back here in the future with Jade and the others."
"Others?" Natha raised his brow. "Should I build a resort or something here?"
"Hehe..." I grinned and fiddled with his fingers. "Maybe just a few more cabins?"
He leaned down and bit my cheek in response, making me shriek in reflex. As revenge, I had to chase him through the shallow lake to pinch his cheeks back--which took time since I had to roll my pants first. I managed to catch him halfway through the lake, and at that point, the stray splash from the waterfall had reached us.
With a laugh, Natha carried me and summoned his wings to cover us like an umbrella. He trudged through the lake and accessed a hidden passage by the side of the waterfall to slip behind the curtain of water. For a while, I could only hear the thundering sound of the waterfall as I clung to Natha and ducked behind his wings. When the wings fluttered open, I was greeted by the dark interior of a cave.
"Whoaa...it’s like my dream adventure!"
I couldn’t help but exclaim as I looked at the dark cave with an unknown end and the sparkling curtain of water at the entrance. Natha snapped his fingers to conjure a floating light so we could see the cave better.
"Do you know where it leads to?"
"The other side of the island. We can explore it tomorrow if you--"
"Why tomorrow?" I tilted my head. "It’s dark anyway, so wouldn’t it be better to explore it while it’s also dark outside? I don’t really want to spend time inside a dark cave during the day when I can enjoy the beach instead."
Natha blinked for a few seconds before laughing. He bent his waist in a polite bow and gestured toward the cave. "After you, Young Master."
* * *
"Is there something like a haunted house challenge or night courage test here?" I asked as we traveled through the narrow cave. The place was a bit humid, perhaps because it was placed near water, but pretty empty.
"I’m not sure since I never played with other kids," Natha shrugged. Well...same. "I think rather than ghosts, kids do this kind of thing for some athletic challenges--like seeing who is faster going back and forth, or who can go through a foggy forest without getting lost."
Ugh--where’s the romance in that?! The act of getting closer with your partners as you went through a scary experience and seeking courage in each other?
"I think parent’s expectations were scarier than any ghost," Natha said nonchalantly.
"Wow..."
This demon also had no romance.
"Also, there are more dangerous creatures in this world than a cursed spirit," he shrugged.
"Oh, right..." I nodded in agreement. Hell--even other demons and other races were more dangerous than a ghost...I think. Suddenly, something came to my mind and I gasped. "Is Valmeier’s grandfather considered a cursed spirit?"
"More like...cursing spirit?"
"Pfff--"
Our laugh echoed in the cave and I flinched for a bit when I heard my own voice. It made us laugh again and the sound kept echoing endlessly for quite some time. Pfft--it could be fun too, this stuff, even without ghosts and such.
The path, I realized, was going uphill gradually. Natha said that the exit was located on the other side of the island, but it didn’t seem to be anywhere near the beach. In fact, when I asked, there was no beach on the other side of the island, just cliffside and jagged rocks. Our cabin was facing the only beach, probably for security reasons.
After the uphill journey, we took while talking about our colorless childhood, I could see the shine of moonlight from the exit. The cloudless sky and the spread of millions of stars felt like a reward that welcomed us to the surface.
We climbed out of the cave’s mouth, which was nestled between rocks and ivies, and laid down on the grass in front of the cave while looking at the spread of glittering carpet above us in wonder. Were they stars millions of years ago, or were they the swimming souls waiting for reincarnation?
"Nat..."
"Hmm?"
"I want Shwa to have a different childhood than us," I gripped the hem of my tunic and started to fiddle with it.
I could feel Natha raised his upper body and looking at me. His cold hand covered my fiddling fingers and held me tight, stopping my tremble and calming my strong emotions. Only then did I realize that I was rather agitated, perhaps because I remembered the feeling of emptiness inside that darkness; the loneliness.
"I...I want Shwa to play with other children, experience the life of a loving family, and go through as many adventures as Shwa wants," I took a deep breath and looked at the pair of steady moonlight. "I don’t care who Shwa was, I don’t care what fate Shwa is going to be tied to in the future, but I want a safe and healthy childhood for my child."
Natha smiled and leaned down to kiss me. "Our child," he whispered against my lips and rubbed my hand assuringly. "And I’ll make sure we do just that."
Yes--I pulled him for another kiss, feeling the relief spreading all over my tensed body. Shwa was our child above everything else, and that was the only thing that mattered.
