Chapter 463: consummating your marriage is not merely physical

This teleportation took more time than usual. It was at least five seconds, I think? Meaning the distance was really, really far. I didn’t think it took this long when he brought me from Lenaar to the Lair.

But I understood why; he did say we would go to an island. An island where there would be only the two of us there. I heard that during my seclusion period, he distracted himself from the stress of not seeing me by going to the island and preparing the place we would stay in during our...ahem--honeymoon. I wonder what kind of place it--

"Oh..."

My eyes fluttered the moment his wings retreated. In front of me was a cabin--a log cabin. It wasn’t big or fancy; in fact, it looked so ordinary that I would have a hard time believing Natha would stay in this kind of place any other time. It was small enough, and probably only consisted of a bedroom with a bath chamber, living room, and a kitchen.

Without looking closer, it would look like a random cabin in the middle of the woods that an explorer might use to rest in the middle of their adventure. But once I focused more, there were a lot of formation runes carved all over the cabin; preservation, protection, detection, warning system, temperature and humidity control, even mundane--but most important--things like bug repellant array.

And yes, as you might guess, it was in the middle of the woods. There was a canopy of tree foliage above the roof and wildflowers surrounded the cabin. The front porch of the cabin was well maintained, with a swing hanging from the ceiling. The front yard was decorated with a white gravel path as well as various shrubs of berries.

Oh, it was wonderful! But what made me inhale sharply was the patio attached to the side, which connected to the living room. I wasn’t sure if I should call it a patio or a pier, because I could jump right into a river from there.

Uh-huh; the cabin was also a riverside one. I couldn’t see it from here, but I could hear the sound of a waterfall from somewhere, deeper in the woods.

"Oh, Mother..."

I grasped my chest and exclaimed in awe. Oh, it was exactly like my dream. A simple place enough for two people to have fun and know each other more, surrounded by nothing but nature.

"Nat...it looks wonderful!" I turned to look at Natha. Even without looking in the mirror, I knew my eyes were sparkling at that moment.

"I’m glad," Natha took my hand and kissed our mark. "Would you like to have a tour?"

"Of course!"

He took my hand and started to lead me somewhere--but not toward the cabin. I tilted my head in confusion, but he took me toward the river instead. A bit further away from the cabin, at an angle that I couldn’t see because it was covered by a fence of trees, I saw a small...boat? Canoe?

"Are we going to...?"

With a smile on his face, Natha led me into the small boat that was only fit for two people. "You don’t think I only own the cabin, don’t you?" he smirked as he loosened up the rope tying the boat and weightlessly stepped into the boat.

"Are you flexing, right now?"

"What are you talking about? I’m just giving information," Natha chuckled while he tapped on the boat and it started to move. Whoaa...magic sure was convenient. "When I say something is mine, it means yours too."

"Oh, so we’re talking about asses sharing, now?" I arched my brow and he laughed.

"Sure, let’s say it like that. Now, you should focus on assessing your new asset, Young Master."

Pfft--well, it sounded like a jest, but he was right. Who said honeymoon was about sex, huh? It could be about wealth distribution, healthy discussion about marriage responsibilities, distribution of household roles, or like in my case; about visiting yet another one of my husband’s collections.

People did not collect islands, you say? That means you did not know enough plutocrats.

But anyway, the place--ahem, my island--was different from the one in the middle of the lake. The mana was still rich here, so it almost felt like I was in the realm of nature. The river was flanked by trees that weren’t as sentient and scary as the ones in the Lair, so it felt more peaceful than eerie. The tree branches hung above the river and created a long tunnel of green and blue leaves, with sunlight streaming through the gap between the foliage.

"How peaceful..." I leaned back on the comfortable seat so I could look up and enjoy the intertwined branches.

It might be weird coming from someone who lived in probably the most peaceful corner of the world, but to be honest, I rarely had time to myself. With Jade and the others always made sure I never felt lonely, my surroundings were actually quite boisterous.

I didn’t hate it, of course. But sometimes, it was nice to have a quiet moment to myself. I got it during bathtime, usually, when Jade rarely joined me unless the little bird wanted to play with water. But here...it was quiet everywhere, with the voices of nature playing absentmindedly in the background.

Now I know why people called some trips a ’healing’.

Of course, it was more wonderful because I wasn’t actually alone.

Stretching my legs, I entangled them with Natha’s. He had been observing me quietly with a smile on his face, and a soft gaze in his eyes.

"Is this another wedding present?" I tilted my head.

"Hmm...part of it," he said, lifting my leg and draping it across his lap.

"’Part’? What’s the full version, then?"

"Wait for a bit," he said mysteriously, and the boat kept on going slowly through the river.

Oh, well--what’s the hurry, anyway? I decided to just enjoy the leisurely automatic boat ride. Natha even took out a bottle of fruit juice as a refreshment. He told me about the foreign plants and wildflowers we saw from the river, and explained what stuff we could do on this island--including playing in the waterfall and some spelunking that would make Ignis jealous. I couldn’t wait to do some foraging too since we came in the middle of spring, and--

"Close your eyes, sweetheart."

Suddenly, Natha put his hand on my eyes, shielding me from view. What? What is this? He leaned down to whisper in my ear. "I’ll give you another present."

Immediately, I quieted down and crouched obediently in my seat, waiting for time to pass. The sounds of chirping from the birds flying back to their nest got less and less, and in its place, I could hear something different; a splash? A swash?

"...are we...near the sea?"

I started to sniff around, inhaling the slightly unique smell of the salty wind. Instead of answering, Natha finally moved his hand away, and directed my gaze to the front.

Oh, it was the sea. It was the sea, alright. But that wasn’t the only thing.

It was a sunset. A sunset against the sea, spread in front of me as if it came out of a painting as our boat stopped in the middle of the estuary. It was different than the rewinding, unchanging sunset I saw in D’Ara’s abode. The swaying water made the enormous ball of orange look ever-changing and alive. Thinking that I wouldn’t be able to see the same sunset tomorrow made me reluctant to even blink, keeping the scene in my memory as much as I could.

"Oh...we should have brought the recording bird!" I sighed in regret.

"But then, it wouldn’t feel as special, would it?" Natha rubbed the back of my hand. "It’s precious because there’s a possibility of losing it."

Well...he was right about that. Besides, we would be too busy looking at the captured scene in the receiving crystal instead of watching the actual sunset.

But...

I looked up and tilted my head. "What about me?" I raised my marked hand. "Am I not precious anymore since we’re tied for life now?"

His brow arched before dipping down to a frown. "Sweetheart, I will always be afraid of losing you," he said. "Even now."

"But we--"

He grasped my hand and slipped his fingers between mine. "Anything can happen in this universe," he said. "And even vampires’ eternal couple don’t always love each other, so...I will always fear that you would fall out of love with me, even if our souls are entwined."

"I don’t think..."

"I know, sweetheart," he kissed the top of my head, and moved me to his lap. "I know how much we love each other now, and it’s because I don’t want to lose it that I’ll work hard to preserve it. More than anything..." he stroked my temple gently, brushing the hair being blown by the wind. "I’m afraid that we might lose this wonderful time we have, because I want to have it for as long as possible."

His eyes, the liquid moonlight, were gleaming with the fire of the sun. And within his words, I could feel the warmth of the leftover daylight.

"It’s not only you that I hold precious, but also the bond that we have," he whispered sincerely without averting his gaze. "So I won’t take it for granted and think that it’s all going to be smooth sailing."

"Oh, Nat..." I held his cheeks and sighed.

"But I can promise you that whatever happens in the future, I will never willingly or unwillingly abandon you--abandon us. I will chase you across the universe if I have to."

"I love you," I held him tight and kissed him with all my heart. "I love you so much."

I whispered the devotion that I only wanted him to hear, just like the promise he made that he only wanted me to hear. In this place, where there were only the two of us.
