Chapter 446: The only thing a bride should think about is the wedding
"You shouldn’t move hastily with this kind of outfit, sweetling," D’Ara caught me when my feet got tangled in the long cape. Thankfully, I didn’t damage the outfit--wouldn’t be funny, really, if it ripped just three days before the wedding. She flicked my nose in warning before shifting her gaze toward my little boy. "Oh--look at you, Jade."
"Hehe..." Jade, who was usually jumping energetically, was now looking bashful and swayed his body like an innocent, shy boy. He looked at D’Ara with sparkling eyes, clearly asking for praise. "Jade did good?"
"Yes, yes you did," she picked up the startled Jade in her arms and stroked the reddened cheek. "So our sweetling had been adorable since his childhood days, mm? What a lucky brat my disciple is. How long can you keep this up, Jade?"
"Umm...if Jade ate Papa’s yummy candy in Mother’s Land, Jade can go for days!"
D’Ara raised her brows and I could see that she was genuinely amazed. "My, my--how impressive."
The little boy perked up even more. Even though many people had praised him for it, especially the druids, I guessed the one coming from the person who taught him just felt different. "Jade good?"
"Yes; such an excellent student you are," she didn’t skimp on her praise, stroking the branch necklace with interest.
"Hehe..."
Oh, looked at my little boy blushing and all. So meek that Natha would be flabbergasted looking at it. Funnily enough, this would be the most similar Jade would be to how I was as a child, since I was a really shy child. Being sick often deprived me of school days, so I didn’t have many chances to interact with other children.
I still prefer Jade being all energetic and cheeky, though.
"I didn’t know you’d be here today," I laughed and looked at D’Ara in wonder. She was just like Natha, suddenly appearing anywhere. But she was so high profile that I thought she would only come during the ceremony.
"That’s because I never told anyone," she shrugged, shifting her gaze to someone behind me. "Oh, Angwi."
The six-armed demon bowed deeply, and from knowing her for the past year, I could tell that Angwi was totally nervous. It was the first time I saw her pupil shaking this much. But still, as a professional, her face barely changed.
The same thing couldn’t be said about the frozen demons behind her who looked like their soul had left their body.
"Ah, don’t bother with any room, I won’t stay the night."
"You won’t?" I asked in surprise. But I thought she was here for the wedding?
"I just came to check on my sweetlings," she stroked my cheek gently, but her gaze was pointing toward L’Anaak Eed. "Shouldn’t I stay with my sons if I’m here anyway?"
"Haha..."
The plural she kept on using made me unconsciously let out a wry laugh, thinking about a certain demon. May your spirit hold on well, Lesta. This is why you should inform your family before getting married.
"What a naughty boy I have," D’Ara huffed while pinching Jade’s cheek, probably remembering the time when Eruha was still a little clueless vampire boy. "He’s not even introducing his Eternal to me."
I gasped and unconsciously grasped her sleeve. "Oh, about the eternal thing--"
"Don’t worry, sweetling. I prepared it already," she chuckled and patted my head carefully. "Ah, right--I’m also here to give you your wedding gift."
"Oh?"
* * *
It took a while for Arta and the seamstresses to wake up from their stupor, gasping and belatedly bowing deeply to show their courtesy. D’Ara merely chuckled as if she had been used to that kind of reception and well...I guessed we couldn’t blame them since normally, people would never thought they would meet a Sacred Guardian in their life, much less for said entity to just show up out of nowhere--during a wedding fitting, no less.
Anyway, it was good that she arrived during the last outfit since I wasn’t sure the seamstresses would be able to continue the fitting if she appeared in the middle. While Angwi gave them some hot drink to calm their nerves, I took D’Ara for a walk in the garden--of course, after taking off the wedding outfit.
"That’s the one you’ll wear during the ceremony?"
"Yeah," I looked at the rooftop and the swirling rainbow above it. "Wouldn’t it look good with elemental birds flying around?"
"Indeed. I presumed he hadn’t seen you in it yet?"
"Of course! Arta said all the outfits are kept secret from him."
D’Ara laughed then; a mischievous kind of laughter that an adult made when they were about to tease a child. Natha would forever be a teenager in her eyes, huh?
"Ah, how nice," D’Ara stopped in front of the pond and looked at it with a smile. I recalled there was nothing like this in her abode.
"Jade’s fishes’s house!" the little boy skipped around the edge of the pond, making my heart stop for a moment.
But unlike my clumsy childhood self, Jade had a good balance and the water wasn’t deep, so I let him be. We watched the boy sprinkling the feed all over the pond from the tea table in the garden.
"Actually, this place is getting nicer now that you’re here," she looked around for a bit before her gaze came back to me. "Perhaps I should spend a few days here."
"You should," I nodded, thinking about all kinds of things I could ask her if she stayed. "My Salamander also made a magma pond in the cliff."
"My--so that’s where the strong fire energy comes from," she glanced back and chuckled, for a while absorbing the scenery without saying anything. "But now now; I need to spend some quality time with my son and son-in-law, right?"
The ’quality’ part was rather questionable, but hey--none of my business!
"Now, about your gift--"
"Umm...but D’Ara... you’ve already given us a gift, so...I don’t think it’s necessary..." I said carefully while stroking the mark around my ring finger. "Not that I’m trying to reject, but--"
Uhh...I didn’t want to sound ungrateful, but I felt like a gift from a Sacred Guardian would be too much to bear. I might not feel nervous around her like the others, but I would be nervous if she gave me something I didn’t think I deserved. The spell...the oath of eternal she would use for me and Natha was already something that mere mortals wouldn’t be able to do, so if I received something more...my conscience wouldn’t be able to hold.
I just hope she didn’t take it the wrong way, though.
"How adorable," she chuckled and reached out her hand to tuck my hair behind my ear. Ah, since Arta was too out of it, no one was tying up my hair again after the fitting. "Well, you are right about the spell being a gift, but that is a wedding gift. This..." she leaned her head closer to me. "This is a gift for the bride."
"Still..."
She smiled and leaned back, propping her elbow on the backrest of the bench. "Tell me, sweetling--have you done something with the information I gave you?"
"Ah..." I nodded, recalling my adventure in the Human Realm. I hadn’t heard anything from them, although I did tell them I didn’t want to be disturbed until my honeymoon was over. "I have dealt with the magician."
The vampire’s crimson eyes curled into a pair of cold crescents. "Not as harsh as I hope, I presumed," she said, running her fingers through my hair. "Well, I don’t expect you to. You are that Princess’s grandson, after all."
"Umm...are you asking this because your--err...gift--have something to do with it?"
D’Ara smiled and tilted her head. "Aren’t you curious?" and as I looked at her in confusion, she continued. "About the grandfather who put on that hex."
My heart felt like it stopped for a few seconds, and as if my blood stopped circulating, I felt cold all of a sudden. Curious? Of course, I was curious! But more than that, I was also...scared.
"I will give you another ticket," D’Ara told me. "You can use it to ask about him all you want. I won’t charge for anything as long as it’s a question related to him."
I swallowed hard and gripped my knees nervously. For some reason, my mind kept going back to the moment I saw the Mayor of Ahrat.
"Papa?"
It seemed I was so nervous that even Jade could feel it from our connection. The boy left the pond and held my pale hands.
"Papa?"
"I’m fine," I smiled and patted the green hair before looking at the vampire.
"Is it...indefinite? Is there a time limit?" I asked with a slight tremble that I could hear in my own voice.
"No."
"Then--" I raised my voice and paused. Realizing how agitated I was, I took a deep breath and held Jade close to calm myself. "Then...for a start, can you draw the face of Grandma’s husband?"
D’Ara nodded. "I can do that."
"But, umm...can you give it to me after the wedding? I don’t..." I exhaled slowly and firmed myself. "For now, I don’t want to think about anything but the wedding."
