Chapter 297: There’s no such thing as too much rainbow in this life

Jade’s anger subsided after I gave it the yummy energy ball. Even so, the little bird gave me a stern warning.

[Jade will tell Nightmare too!]

Wow...the bird must be majorly pissed if it even used Natha to threaten me.

"I get it, I get it. I’ll tell him myself once we get back, okay?" I patted the little bird before it stomped its way toward the small murky ball of mana. I didn’t manage to get much--just a bit bigger than Jade--but the little bird told me it was enough for a few hours of transformation.

After Jade entered the ball, I felt Zia on my back, squeezing around my waist like a safety belt. "You’re so reckless!" she hissed again. Seemed like the scolding was yet to end.

"I told you I forgot..."

It had been such a long time since there was any effect on me, not since I absorbed the fire elemental mana in Ignis’s volcano.

"The fact that you forgot means you are reckless, Val!" Zia pinched my cheek hard.

"Ah--ah--I get it! I’m sorry, so--ouch!"

"Hmph!"

I rubbed my cheek with a grimace. I guessed I should be thankful that I only got weightless, not turning into an invisible particle or anything. Although the fact that it happened so high in the air was a total safety hazard.

Yeah...it was truly reckless of me. Haa...I could only imagine the scolding I would have to receive from Natha later.

But it would be better to tell him myself than having him hear from someone else--like that time with my aquamorph. After all, I had four witnesses and two were very willing to go to Natha and report me.

Well...I had to admit it was my fault this time. When I turned into water, I could argue that I had no idea it would happen, since no one told me about it. But this time, I lost that privilege; especially since I had been warned sternly about not doing it. Haa...right--facing the consequences of your mistake is what being an adult means, Val.

While I was busy finding courage, we entered the estate’s aerial space. Zia and Izzi exclaimed loudly, looking down at the magnificent spread of a neverending colorful forest. I had thought Izzi wouldn’t be too affected since he lived in an evergreen realm, but I guessed he had been away from that place for too long.

The last time I rode Vrida here, I was busy with Amarein’s letter and finding a location for her nest, so I didn’t take ample time to look at the tower. But Mother, it was marvelous. I couldn’t take my eyes away from the storm of rainbow flashing around above the tower, where the elemental bird resided. I bet no one would think this was the Lair of a Demon Lord, because it looked like a stairway to heaven instead.

Hmm...I wondered what the Hero and his companions would think if they saw the Lair.

While the inventor--and maybe the Midas girl--might know that Matsa Ra Natha wasn’t an evil dark lord like how the human priest told them, the other had been used to the indoctrination. Even if the Hero knew it was Lenaar who started the war, it wouldn’t necessarily make him think that demons were good.

For humans, be it from this world or from Earth, the image of a Demon was always an unsavory one. So coming to the Lair and witnessing how beautiful the place was would be mindboggling--a paradigm shift, even.

Honestly...can’t wait to see that.

I told Vrida to fly toward the field in front of the forest, and as we hovered over the place, I saw Doun running out of the forest, waving his arms like a marshaller at an airport runway. The smart wyvern saw the demon and flew in that direction, where the ground was just the right firmness for a smooth landing.

The first to come down was Izzi, who jumped with the gracefulness of a mountain elf and the nervousness of a man at the end of a scary ride. Zia was holding tight onto my torso and flew down the wyvern back while carrying me.

"Hey, I can get down myself, you know," I glanced at her face, which was more red than pink from the exertion. Succubus’s wings had never meant to carry another person’s weight after all.

"Shut up!" Zia hissed, and I clamped my mouth, holding tightly to Jade while we were wobbling to the ground.

"Beautiful, isn’t she?" I grinned at Doun’s sparkling eyes as he gazed at Vrida.

"I can totally see that she’s yours," Doun carefully approached the wyvern, maintaining eye contact with both hands up in the air, empty.

I put the energy ball in Zia’s hand and head to Vrida, caressing the side of her face and told her that Doun would take of her needs here. She purred deeply, yellow eyes watched the approaching half-demon. After half a minute of scrutinization, Vrida nodded, and let Doun touch her.

"She already chose a place for her nest, perhaps you can check it with her?"

"Certainly, Young Master," the demon nodded confidently. "Please be assured that I will take good care of her."

"Of course, you will!" I laughed and rubbed the wyvern’s cheek again. "I’ll see you later, Vrida."

With Vrida’s deep purr as a farewell, we head to the tower. As the golems welcomed us in front of the main door, Jade stirred inside the now transparent sphere, and by the time we saw Angwi in the guest drawing room, the sphere popped and Jade jumped awake.

[Angwi!] Jade greeted the original bird sitter before Lesta came into view. The little bird flew in front of the demon and flapped its wings excitedly. [Angwi! Angwi! Jade want to show something!]

"Jade wants to brag about something," I told her with a muffled laugh, and Angwi tilted her head, patiently waiting as Jade landed on top of the couch.

Just like the last time, the little bird dispersed into a million specks of light, before gathering again in a significantly bigger clump. With a soft popping sound, the light glowed so brightly that I had to close my eyes for a bit.

"Tada!!" with a cheerful exclaim, the little boy Jade raised his arms high in the air, like someone jumping out of the box as a surprise. "Jade is here!"

And a surprise it was, for Angwi was standing still with eyes opened slightly wider than usual. She didn’t react for a few seconds, before clapping twice--which in Angwi’s standards was equivalent to a standing ovation.

Jade laughed and jumped happily on the couch, before Zia carried him down so we could dress him--a pair of dark green outfits, just like what I wore. "We need to give Jade a clothing artifact," Zia laughed when Jade squirmed uncomfortably--the elemental child didn’t like wearing one since it had been naked from birth, and the only reason Jade agreed to wear clothes was to wear something similar to mine.

"What kind of artifact is that?"

"Well, it’s basically clothes that could change into accessories," Zia explained while tying the lace of Jade’s shirt. "Shapeshifters like Opti or were-tribes like Caba usually have them, since it’ll be hard to destroy or change clothes every time they turn."

Oh, that made sense. No wonder Caba didn’t end up with no clothes after turning into that monstrous wolf in Ignis’s volcano. "That’s great! I certainly don’t want Jade to come out naked every time."

"But Jade always naked in bird!" the little boy pouted.

"Well...he looks like a boy, but he doesn’t have...anything down there," Izzi said with a shrug.

"Sush!" I threw a pillow at the elf. It was true, however, that the little boy didn’t have reproductive organs--not like he would need them. But let’s not go there. "Jade is not naked, though? You have your plumes, don’t you? The clothes are like our plumes."

"Is that so?" the green eyes blinked in new wonder.

"Well, you don’t see my skin getting all pretty and colorful like your plume, right?"

The little boy tilted his head, still looking dubious. Honestly, I was also just bullshitting, so...

"Well, Jade...Val is always wearing clothes, right? Since you want to look like Val, you also have to wear clothes."

"Oh!" the little boy clapped and nodded so easily now.

Haa...should have used that reason from the start. At any rate, I made a mental note to ask Natha for that artifact, since I was sure Jade would turn into this child form a lot in the future.

"Master! Jade want to show the others too!" the little boy climbed to my lap now that he had done getting dressed.

"The other elemental birds?"

"Yes!"

Hmm...I embraced the little boy while falling into ponder. There was something swirling in my head after looking at the heavenly-looking rainbow storm on the rooftop, and now that Jade wanted to go up there, the idea wouldn’t get out of my head.

"Angwi," I looked at the demon, who stared back at me inquisitively. "Is it possible to do the wedding ceremony on the rooftop?"
