Chapter 265: I’m collecting my fantasy must-haves one by one
Thanks to Natha waking up like usual, we still had to eat breakfast with the Vampire Lord, who narrowed her eyes at me for some reason.
Why?
"Haa...you naughty little minx," she shook her head after giving me a bombastic review.
My eyes squinted at her as I took a seat. "Thank you?"
[Master, what a naughty little minx?]
"I don’t know, Jade, don’t remember those words," I whispered to the little bird, who obediently nodded with a serious face.
[Okay, it’s too difficult for Jade]
Good bird, good bird! I gave Jade permission to have one candy for breakfast since it was such a good bird. All of Sada’s children/Eruha’s nieces and nephews were also there before they went back to their territories. They all looked hungover, though, but still managed to stare at me like I was a fascinating creature.
"How could you look this...fresh?"
"Because I’m a druid?" I shrugged. Okay, well, perhaps I wasn’t that strong in drinking, because I still got drunk, but hey--at least I would never experience having a hungover and throwing up at Natha ever again.
"How envious," one of them, Nadira, someone who really really liked to drink, but also really really lightweight, pursed her lips and laid her throbbing head on the table.
Whelp--all I could do was grin and happily stuff my stomach with food after a nice session of a night-time body workout.
Natha patted my head because I was eating so well, and so did Sada, and then all of the vampires except Eruha gave me one too, saying it was a thank you and a goodbye, because they needed to get back to work. Uhh...it was annoying that they treated me like I was a child--although I guessed they were all several hundred older than me--but it was also nice because they were all treating me nicely.
And it was even nicer because Natha told me to wait for two hours in our room, and exactly after two hours, he came back and immediately took me on a date.
Did...did he just do everything he had to do today in those two hours so he could take me on a date? And...and he even bribed Jade so the little bird would stay with Lesta instead of tagging us?
"My Lord, my birthday is in the fifth month," I told him.
"You don’t think I know that already?" Natha laughed while lifting me into the carriage.
"But why are you doing things that felt like a birthday gift?"
"My, my, how could the Lord of Greed’s betrothed think a mere date equal to a birthday gift," he shook his head and made a disappointed look as he climbed the carriage. "’Tis nothing but a mere obligation one should carry for the beloved, more so if it were these pretty lips which invoke such an order."
...who are you?!
That was heart-throbbing, though, when he rubbed my lips as he said it. Made me gulping and all. "...uhh, did I... ask you for this? Last night?"
"No, you just whine about me working all the time and never taking you on a date," he laughed softly and kissed the back of my hand as if he were a gentleman.
"I...I did?"
Ugh--this is why I said never get drunk anymore!
He chuckled at my guilty face, and kissed my forehead gently as the carriage started to run. "It’s fine. It’s my fault for neglecting my pretty, adorable bride," he said while I buried my face in embarrassment. "And you said it so adorably too."
Aaagh! Even though I promised myself to never be the kind of lover who got jealous of his works!
Thankfully, he stopped teasing me about it, and I stopped thinking about all the embarrassment my drunken self made the moment we entered the city. I told him about all of the places I wanted to visit with him yesterday, including the nice dessert cafe in an upper district that had a beautiful view of the city landscape. I told him I wanted to see the stores selling magic tools for reference, and we ended up making a huge purchase.
But the best event should be the auction we went to after lunch, specifically only auctioning the rarest of ingredients and cooking equipment, including a one-in-a-century rainbow-colored fruit and a knife made by a renowned drow blacksmith--which Natha both purchased because I said the fruit reminded me of Jade’s tails and the knife seemed like a nice gift for Angwi. He also won some other stuff, mainly herbs, but I had no idea what their exact function was. Well, needless to say, we left the auction house with many eyes on us thanks to his nonchalant way of bidding.
What greeted us the moment we came back was Jade’s headbutt and a farewell feast, because we would visit Natha’s teacher tomorrow. By us, I mean me and Natha, because Lesta and Eruha still had their work to finish here before getting back to L’Anaak Eed.
Before we departed the next morning, I turned to look at my more-or-less teacher and told him off. "Eruha, don’t tire Lesta too much, okay? I’m not going to be here to heal him."
He looked genuinely surprised at my warning and raised his head. The vampire who rarely lied outside of his strategy movement averted his eyes and replied hesitatingly. "...I’ll try,"
"Don’t try, do it!" I puffed my cheek in annoyance, because it seemed like the extent of his willingness to try was as short as Jade’s tail in little bird form. So I looked at the vampire’s boss. "Nat!"
"If my sweetheart so wishes," Natha replied while raising his brow at Eruha, who slightly pursed his lips and put his hand above his chest.
"By Your Highness’s command."
"Hey!" I clicked my tongue at how he used the title which made me the most embarrassed. But Lesta was stifling his laugh on the side, so I guessed it was enough for now. "Well, as long as you adhere to it."
Natha patted my head softly, as one of the vampire vassals approached us to inform us that our mount beast was ready.
Yep--we weren’t going by carriage, but a mounted beast. Since we would have to traverse the jungle and mountain range before reaching the teacher’s abode, one which did not allow for movement-related magic, it was either a mount beast or our own feet.
Easy choice, if you ask me.
But I didn’t know until right when I saw it, that our mount beats would be...a wyvern.
My lips parted as I saw the large body and even larger wings filled up my vision. It was slightly bigger than a modern aircraft, looking as scary as it was majestic. The rider made the wyvern on the field in front of us, and Natha whispered to me.
"Well, we can’t do anything about the dragon, but I hope this satisfies you enough for now,"
I took a deep breath, knowing that wyvern was actually rare. They were too dangerous to be let out in the wilderness, but also too beneficial to be killed, which was why demons started to tame them. But it was also hard to breed them, so even after successfully taming them, wyverns were still few in number. Those who had them as mount beast was usually big clans or big transportation company that rented them to VIP clients, because they were that expensive. Even Natha felt having a wyvern was a pointless expense, and never thought of acquiring one--that, and he could teleport anyway.
But one look at the saddle and the identification bracelet on its leg, which bore Natha’s double-wing crest, already told me that he didn’t just rent it. He bought it.
Because...I asked him about the dragons?
"I wasn’t sure it would come right on time, but it seems like they do deliver. It’s quite hard looking for something with your color," Natha said while caressing my hair, as my eyes ran over the bark-colored dark scale, dark green skin, and leafy wing membranes.
"It’s...it’s ours?" I blinked as the big yellow eyes of the wyvern gazed in my direction.
"She’s yours," Natha said. "Go give her a name."
I pressed my lips and turned toward Natha, kissing him briefly before running toward the wyvern. The wyvern straightened its neck as I approached, and the rider as well as the vampires gave me a warning.
"Be careful, Young Master! She’s still not completely tamed!"
Really? I slowed down my steps, but as I looked at the yellow eyes with green speckles around them, I didn’t see any malice. So although I wasn’t running anymore, I didn’t hesitate to approach her. Her triangular head followed my movement, and when I stretched out my arms, the head lowered above me, looming--
"Young Master!"
--and nuzzled the side of my head. It was so big that even my arms couldn’t cradle the head, and the scales felt ticklish as they grazed me, because they were actually covered in soft, thin, almost invisible bristle.
I laughed and patted the thick flesh beneath the yellow eyes, stroking my new mount--no, companion. "Mm, mm, good girl! Aren’t you a good and nice girl?"
She made a deep sound that almost rang like a purr, and I stroked the dark forehead, from which horns with intertwining gray and green veins jutted out. The wyvern lowered her body completely now, laying--or crouching?--on the field so I didn’t have to look up anymore. Gosh, so considerate!
"Nat, she’s so pretty!" I looked back and saw my Demon Lord walking closer with a satisfied smile on his face. There was someone who wasn’t satisfied, however.
Jade hovered around me while chirping aggressively. Yeah, just chirping. The little bird didn’t even talk inside my head, just chirping, which meant it was either mumbling or cursing.
"Why, Jade? You’re pretty too, the prettiest," I laughed and patted the jealous little bird. "Come here and say hi to her, she’s going to be our friend, you know."
The beady green eyes narrowed, and Jase sulkily landed on my shoulder, watching the wyvern who only looked at Jade cooly and calmly, probably wondering why she was suddenly berated by this little bird.
I put my hand on her head, and told them; "Her name is Vrida," she blinked and purred again for a few seconds, before nuzzling my palm. "And this is Jade, my dearest familiar."
[Dearest!]
I patted the little bird, who then jumped onto Vrida’s head, just like what it did to Ignis back then. Was that Jade’s way of asserting dominance? It would be rather cute if that were the case. Just like Ignis, Vrida also didn’t mind it, probably just seeing it as a child’s antics.
"Dearest, huh? What about me?" I felt Natha’s arms around my waist and his lips on my temple.
"You?" I looked up and smiled at the pair of moonlight. "You’re the one I can’t live without."
