Chapter 261: For once, let me be the one who watches over other’s relationship
After making sure Jade was satisfied with the candy, we continued with our journey to a place not far from the commercial district; the financial street.
This would be the second time I visited a bank in this world. The first time was to take all of Valmeier’s money so I could cover paid for his ’debt’ and pay the information fee on Amrita. Obviously, that bank was in the human realm, and the workers there looked at me like I was a vermin.
This second visit to a bank was vastly different. First; the bank was bigger, looking almost like a courthouse. Even then, Lesta said that the one in L’Anaak Eed was bigger, which made me decide that there was no use trying to make sense of Natha’s wealth.
Just as Natha said, the only thing I needed to do was enjoy that wealth. After all, if we could learn that mark of eternal, then we would die together. There was no need for me to receive the inheritance or anything. I looked down and patted the pendant on my chest.
I didn’t have to, but you’d probably need to learn about them, Shwa.
The second thing that was glaringly different: how the workers welcomed us. The guards and the clerks were lining up to bow and greet us with so much energy, making the clients look at us in wonder. And even though it was Lesta who was there for some business and inspection, they showed more courtesy toward me.
"Well, you’re basically the owner too, Young Master," Lesta chuckled at my surprise and confusion. "I’m just a lackey."
Lies. He definitely wasn’t just a lackey, despite always having fun by referring to himself as such. The workers, from the tellers to the Branch Head showed him high respect. If I had to compare him to the practice in my previous life, then it was probably something like an executive director.
"I don’t need to do anything, right?"
"You can wait in the VIP’s lounge, Young Master, or you can come with me to observe," he gave me the choice.
"I have this feeling that Eruha will give me a quiz once we get back so I’ll just follow you,"
He laughed at my begrudging answer, and I ended up following him into the Head’s office where he would have his meeting. They offered me the head seat around the table, but I refused because there was nothing for me to contribute to today’s agenda. Also, I preferred observing from afar, so they prepared a chair beneath the window--my favorite spot everywhere.
Do you know what they said about navigating the social life? It was to fake it. And that was what I did; acting like I understood what they were talking about by making sure I wasn’t falling asleep like Jade. I tried to maintain a calm but focused expression, as if I followed whatever they said closely.
In reality, there were too many things I didn’t understand. In the first place, I had no idea about the socio-economic scheme in the realm of gluttony, so I already lost comprehension within the first five minutes. Well, at least I knew they were talking about investment frameworks, and Lesta listened to the financial and operational report on the bank to be relayed to Natha later.
Hmm, yeah, I decided that I had no passion or talent in this side of the world. Financial was definitely not my thing. And I told Natha this once we got back to the Vampire Lord’s Castle in the evening.
"I’m envious of Jade," I told him truthfully. "I want to fall asleep too..."
Natha chuckled at my struggle to keep my mind focused on the business talk. "You don’t have to understand them. You just have to enjoy them."
I grinned and took out a box of candy from my storage ring. "That’s what I do!"
He patted my head in approval, and I gave him the most unstimulating taste among the candy inside the box. "Did you only buy candy after going around the city for the whole day?"
"Of course, not!" I said, and started to list all the shopping we did after the business with the bank was finished; souvenirs for the others.
"You buy things for others, but what about yourself?" Natha tilted his head as I spread my shopping hauls on the table.
"I bought candy and books," I shrugged.
"That’s it?"
"I don’t know what else to buy," I shook my head. It wasn’t like I really needed anything, because Natha always prepared things that I needed before I even knew I needed them.
Still, he didn’t seem to be satisfied with my answer. No--he even looked disappointed, as if he was upset I didn’t dry his coffers or something. I giggled and cupped his cheek. "Well, you’ve been taking care of me so well that I don’t feel like I need anything more."
"You should still indulge yourself," he said, before I stuffed another candy inside his mouth--a sour one this time.
"I indulged myself plenty, though?"
"Didn’t you go to the apparel store? What about the accessory shop? Did you check the auction house?"
I pressed my lips to prevent myself from laughing out loud. Why was it that he got so gunged up about me spending his money? Hmm...was he feeling guilty because he couldn’t accompany me around the city?
Interesting.
"Hmm...I guessed I wasn’t really in the mood to check on a lot of places because it wasn’t a date..." I half faked a disappointment--because the other half was true--and pouted, turning my face away from him.
"Sweetheart, I’m sorry," Natha sounded really regretful, trying hard to look at my turning face while stroking my arms apologetically. "Forgive me, yeah? I promise I’ll look for a time tomorrow; maybe we can visit some places together in the evening?"
I was only meant to tease him, but I couldn’t help getting excited by his words. "Really?" I turned my face to look at him again, but still maintaining my sulky expression. "Promise?"
"Promise," he said, before sealing it with a short, chaste kiss.
Well, I guessed there was no need for me to act sulky anymore. I giggled and threw my arms around his neck. I realized that even after doing this...selfish thing, I didn’t feel guilty or anything. I used to tell myself to never demand trivial things from him, but now I felt comfortable even when I acted greedy for his time and attention.
I wouldn’t say it was a bad feeling too. It was always nice to know that my partner cared about me this much.
"Well, alright," I nodded, squeezing his cheek to express my delight. "It’s too bad today that I can’t have a date with you, but it’s nice to walk around without guards following me for change--I mean, the visible ones," I added, because I knew there were still people guarding me from places I couldn’t see. Natha was nothing if not meticulous after all. But still, those people wouldn’t be able to do much if an accident happened next to me abruptly. "You really trust Lesta, huh?"
"Of course, there’s a reason I left a lot of my business with him," Natha replied nonchalantly, as if it was something obvious. "The La siblings are the first demons I could call my own people, so they will always have a special place in my household."
"Hmm, hmm,"
I nodded in agreement. It was clear when all three siblings held critical positions in Natha’s reign; one of them was in charge of internal matters, one of them was taking care of inter-realm relations, and another one was responsible for the whole realm’s logistics.
People would argue about Natha being biased, but I didn’t think it was weird to put someone you could totally trust in critical positions. The siblings had followed Natha even before he started his business and became the wealthiest demon in the realm. They were there when Natha took his revenge on the Spectre, and would always stand by his side no matter what. It was apparent from how they instantly welcomed me the first time without any fuss.
Moreover, they had no ties with anyone in the first place, so Natha didn’t have to worry about them bringing their own agenda to his household.
"They are also talented in their own way, so it was a bonus," Natha shrugged. "Lesta especially has the best ability in facing other people. His sisters are either too stony or too sunny."
Which was why he was in charge of foreign relations. "But he doesn’t seem like he could face Eruha well..." I muttered. It wasn’t just today--anytime Lesta lost his cool, it definitely had something to do with Eruha.
"That’s true," Natha smirked. "Fascinating, isn’t it?"
I looked at Natha and raised my brow. "You’re having fun, huh?"
"Aren’t you?"
I giggled in agreement, and then I recalled what happened in the candy store that afternoon. The conversation that we had about the ’what if’ scenario, was about what would I feel if I died before Natha because my lifespan had ended.
I didn’t think much about it before, because Jade suddenly said something so cute back then. But now, it dawned on me that I felt like Lesta was seeking some answer back then. I recalled back to my answer, and I wondered if it helped him make a decision.
I hoped so.
"What is it?" Natha asked me when he saw I was suddenly giggling to myself.
"Nothing," I shrugged. "I just hope everything’s resolved well between those two."
"That’s right," Natha nodded, although I had no idea if he wanted it to get resolved so his household’s peace wouldn’t get disrupted. "Well, let’s just observe from afar. For now, we have another feast to attend."
Ugh.
