Chapter 45: Treasure Chest

Agares continued walking down the corridor. The smart navigation panel was still active and pointing straight ahead—there was no one else there but him and Aoi.

The damp, wet walls of the dungeon, the foul stench that was characteristic of such places, and the occasional strange noises were the only companions on their journey.

Once again, Aoi disliked the rotten smell of the dungeon. She pinched her nose and hid inside Agares’s shirt pocket.

Agares noticed Aoi’s behavior but didn’t mind it. After all, she had disliked the dungeon environment from the very beginning.

His steps halted at a four-way junction. According to the smart navigation system, the path to the fifth floor boss room was to the right. But something bothered Agares.

The two other paths—the middle and left—led elsewhere. The left path extended into a long corridor, while the middle one led to a different space. Agares grew curious about them.

"Nyx."

[Standby Mode Deactivated]

[Do you need something, Master?]

"Can you tell me what lies ahead in these paths?"

[Certainly, Master.]

[Dungeons are mysterious places filled with monsters and treasure rooms. There are three possible outcomes ahead of you, Master:]

[First, the path to the floor boss room. Second, the path to a treasure chest. Third, a trap corridor.]

[Further details cannot be provided due to lack of information.]

"Hmm... If the smart navigation system says the right path leads to the floor boss, then the left and middle paths could either be traps or lead to treasure."

Aoi stirred awake upon realizing that Agares had stopped walking. She poked her head out of his shirt pocket and saw the confused look on his face.

"Is something wrong?" Aoi asked.

"Aoi? Can you help me?" asked Agares.

"Help with what?"

"Sound resonance."

Aoi fell silent, glancing around the area. She understood why Agares had asked—he wanted to find the right route to the boss room.

"Alright. I’ll send out sound waves into all three paths in front of us."

"Wait!"

"Not three—just two."

The white fox flinched and looked confused. She looked at Agares and saw him pointing toward the middle and left routes.

Aoi smiled and nodded, suspecting Agares was up to something.

She raised both her paws and placed them on her head. The blue markings on her fur began to glow as circular waves of sound spread into the two corridors. Aoi concentrated, working hard to map out the two paths.

"Left... is a trap."

"Middle... I’m not sure. I see a chest."

"A chest?" Agares asked.

After five minutes, Aoi stopped her ability and collapsed tiredly onto Agares’s shoulder. Her breathing was labored, and the blue glow on her fur faded. She was exhausted.

"Good work, Aoi."

Agares broke off a chunk of bread and handed it to her. Aoi clutched it like a pillow and fell asleep again, returning to his shirt pocket.

Based on Aoi’s information, Agares entered the middle corridor cautiously. He hadn’t confirmed yet whether it truly led to a treasure chest.

If there really was treasure, he was eager to find out what he would get.

As he walked deeper, his attention was drawn forward, where he saw a brown wooden chest that looked ancient and worn.

’Is this the treasure chest Aoi mentioned?’ Agares wondered.

He crouched in front of it, noticing there was no metal lock securing it. His curiosity grew. Bracing himself, he opened the chest.

Three items floated up in front of him—all of them ice-affinity items.

[DING! Congratulations, Agares! You’ve obtained items from a treasure chest]

[Chest Type: Low]

[Items:]

[x1 Ice-Touched Leather Armor] [Uncommon]

[x1 Frostoil Coating] [Common]

[x1 Frozen Crystal Core] [Common]

’A low-tier chest. Not very useful to me,’ Agares thought.

’But at least now I know this place doesn’t just have monsters—it has treasure too.’

Out of curiosity, Agares tapped on one of the items: the Ice-Touched Leather Armor, to view its description.

[Item:]

[Ice-Touched Leather Armor]

[Quality: Uncommon]

[Desc: A lightweight armor made from the scales of a young ice turtle. Offers protection against Ice-Affinity attacks.]

[Buffs: +10% Freeze Resistance || +5% Cold Resistance]

"This armor can help protect me from ice-type attacks. But... are there even any monsters in this dungeon with ice affinity?"

"I haven’t heard of any."

Agares paused. If the first item was related to ice affinity, then the other two were likely connected as well.

He figured it would be best to hold on to them in case he needed them later.

"I’ll keep them for now."

He stepped out of the middle corridor. Once back at the four-way junction, Agares turned toward the right corridor—the one that led to the boss room, according to the smart navigation.

He glanced at Aoi, who was still fast asleep in his shirt pocket, hugging the bread like it was her soulmate. The sight touched him, but he knew he couldn’t always rely on her.

Agares needed to find a more permanent solution for reconnaissance.

He kept walking and gradually noticed that the air was growing colder. He stopped and looked around—down at the floor and to the walls of the corridor.

"What the..."

He was right. What he saw were frost flowers—formed by condensed water vapor freezing from the cold temperature. Nearly all the walls and floors were covered with them.

"Could the items from that chest be related to the monster affinity on this floor?" he wondered aloud.

ROAR!

A roar echoed loudly from up ahead. Agares drew his sword and pointed it forward. From within the darkness, he clearly saw five blue turtles.

Their bodies were about knee-high, with mounds of ice crystals stacked on their shells.

Small holes in their shells released freezing mist into the air, creating a cold effect on everything around them.

"Ice-affinity monsters," Agares muttered.

He quickly tapped his magic pouch and summoned the Ice-Touched Leather Armor. With one press, the armor equipped itself, overlaying his old gear.

[Item Equipped!]

[+10% Freeze Resistance]

[+5% Cold Resistance]

As expected, Agares began to feel better with the ice armor on, no longer chilled as before. Now, he was ready to fight those monsters.

"This is getting interesting."

"Each floor has its own unique features."

"I wonder if I’ll find something down there... besides the Lumen Astra Sword?"
