Chapter 42: S-Level Dungeon Siege

After getting Arthur’s message, Agares stepped away from the place. He walked through the dimensional portal and arrived at the circular altar, where Erika was waiting for him.

Erika turned her head. She quickly got up even though her legs were limping and injured. The woman looked happy and relieved to see Agares return safely.

Agares hurriedly approached Erika and asked her how she was doing. Erika and Agares fixed their gaze on one spot, clearly seeing the veins in Erika’s legs turning purple, a sign that the dark energy infection had spread.

"It looks like your condition isn’t getting any better," said Agares.

"I’m fine, I can still—"

"Ugh!"

Just as Erika tried to walk normally with both legs, she grimaced in pain and almost fell. Luckily, Agares managed to catch her.

"Don’t push yourself."

Agares removed Erika’s iron armor piece by piece and told her to put it in her storage. Erika nodded, but she was curious about what Agares was going to do.

After the armor was removed, Agares carried Erika in his arms. This reflexively made Erika gasp and wrap her arms around Agares’ neck.

"I’ll take you home."

Erika was stunned. She didn’t know what had happened to Agares earlier. The woman was sure that something in the portal had changed Agares’ purpose. But she didn’t know what it was.

Agares stepped out of the room and entered another hallway. While carrying Erika, Agares reactivated Nyx.

"Nyx."

[Can I help you, Master?]

’It seems that the power in that room was able to block a person’s interactive system. What kind of power could do something like that?’ asked Agares.

However, Agares didn’t have time to think about it. What he had to do now was to take Erika away and not involve her in his plan.

"Show me the way out of this dungeon," Agares explained.

"Good! Show me the way."

Slowly, a green arrow appeared in Agares’ view, directing him to the best route out of this place.

Erika was still confused, she clearly saw how Agares interacted with the system as if he were talking to his personal assistant.

"What was that?" asked Erika, making Agares glance at her.

"Interactive system. I activated it by calling its name."

"Why?"

"What is an interactive system?" asked Erika, even more confused

Agares was shocked. Seeing Erika’s confused face, it was obvious that she didn’t know anything about interactive systems. If she didn’t know, then most likely she didn’t have one.

’Am I the only one in this world who has an interactive system?’ asked Agares.

To ease Erika’s curiosity, Agares explained what an interactive system was in simple terms.

He continued explaining during the trip. Occasionally, Agares had to pause because he had to fight monsters they encountered.

"So, we can access any menu by talking without forming the S pattern?" asked Erika, sitting on a rock and asking Agares who was fighting a Wolf Voidbound Hound monster.

"Yes!"

"More or less."

Agares continued attacking the monsters until he defeated them. There were two of them in total, and Agares gained 600 EXP from the battle.

"That’s truly amazing. The interactive system will save us a lot of time," said Erika.

"Yes, could you not ask me questions while I’m fighting?"

"Hehe, sorry, Agares. I’m just a curious person."

The man sighed softly. He picked up Erika’s body again and carried her away to continue exploring the dungeon’s hallway.

Among Erika’s party members, there was a priest who might be able to heal her leg.

After about three hours of walking while carrying Erika, the smart navigation panel disappeared, indicating that Agares had arrived at their destination.

He looked ahead and saw Erika’s adventurer party members waiting in front of the dungeon cave.

"Erika! You’re finally back."

"I’m back, everyone."

Two of Erika’s female friends approached, while Nash and Feyd remained outside. Agares put Erika down so they could treat her. However, something made Agares suspicious.

He noticed that Nash and Feyd were staring at him intently, unlike before. This immediately made Agares wary.

"Come on, join us outside. I’ll heal you there," said the priest, gesturing for Agares to follow.

"Don’t touch me!" Agares snapped aggressively.

Erika, who was being carried by the mage, reflexively turned her head back. She saw Agares’ aggressive stance as he clearly refused the priest’s offer.

"What’s going on?" asked Erika.

Agares smiled. He spoke loudly, telling Natalya she could come out of her hiding place. Agares’ suspicions were confirmed; Nash and Feyd’s change in attitude happened after they found out about Agares.

Natalya Thorn emerged from the side of the dungeon cave. She wasn’t alone; 30 soldiers from the Berdiver city had come to arrest Agares. Natalya had also informed Helderic and the people in the palace about Agares’ whereabouts.

"Surrender, Agares. You’re surrounded. No one can save you," said Natalya, pointing to her soldiers.

"HAHAHA!"

"I knew it. You came here to arrest me by yourself."

"Mother?! What are you doing? Agares saved me."

Natalya turned and saw Erika. She was glad that Erika was okay, only suffering minor injuries to her leg. But Agares’ kindness couldn’t cover up the 1,000 cruel things he had done.

"He’s still a criminal. He’s killed many people and destroyed many places! You should have known that before you defended him, Erika!" Natalya said firmly.

Nash acted. He took Erika away and acted aggressively toward Agares. Feyd did the same, even though he knew Agares was the one who had saved them.

An order was an order. If they disobeyed, the Kingdom would punish them for associating with Agares.

"Surrender, Sir Agares. I am prepared to bear witness to your kindness—"

"I don’t need your compassion!" Agares snapped, interrupting Nash.

Now, Agares’ attention was focused ahead, staring at Natalya and the 30 city soldiers who were after his life. Now, everyone knew of Agares’ whereabouts. Natalya and many other city soldiers were desperate to kill Agares and claim the grand prize from the palace.

"You want my head, don’t you? Come and take it! I’ll be waiting for you at the bottom of this dungeon!"

"If you’re too late, I might return to the surface not as Agares, but as the 36th Divine Saber!"

Agares ran into the dungeon, Erika shouting his name. However, Nash held her back.

"Don’t go after him. Leave him to your mother and the city’s soldiers," explained Nash.

"Your friend is right, Erika. Agares is not someone you can handle on your own," replied Natalya, approaching Erika.

"Do you have any proof that Agares is the one who destroyed Faircallen?! Did you see it with your own eyes?!" shouted Erika, leaving Nash and Natalya speechless.

"No one knows. However, what is certain is that the commands of the kingdom and the empire are absolute. We cannot argue with them," explained Nash.

"What about Agares’ life? It’s unfortunate, but his death is a good thing for everyone."

"You have to wake up and accept this reality, Erika!"
