Chapter 21: Human-Demons War

Not wanting to be arrested by them, Agares chose to enter the medium-sized brothel. A brothel maid came and took him to the second floor, right to Madam Louise’s office.

The woman was the owner of this brothel. She had been running this business for three years since her mother handed it over to her. Now, Madam Louise had complete control over all of her women.

The door to Madam Louise’s room opened, revealing a beautiful woman in a red dress sitting on a single seat sofa. Her slender hands held a glass of wine.

"Welcome, sir," said the woman, smiling at Agares.

"Can you handle the city soldiers, Lile?" asked Louise.

The maid responded with a nod. She clearly understood that she would have to deal with the city soldiers, making sure they didn’t break into the brothel and search for Agares.

Madame Louise’s door closed, Agares stepped closer to her. The mature woman stood up and held out her hand, offering him the glass of wine. Seeing this, Agares gasped.

"Isn’t this—"

"I haven’t drink it. Look, are there any lip marks on the glass?" asked Madame Louise.

Agares fell silent. He placed the glass on the table and sat down on the long sofa in front of Madame Louise.

Louise smiled seductively, occasionally lifting her leg to show off her long legs.

"So, what do you want from me?" Agares asked.

"I’m saving you from them."

"Besides, it’s my job to save people who are important to the Princess, isn’t it?" explained Louise.

"You’re beating around the bush. Who exactly are you talking about?" asked Agares.

Louise’s eyes remained fixed on Agares, staring intently and seriously. Slowly, the situation in Madame Louise’s room changed to a vast plain full of blooming flowers. Agares was shocked.

"What’s happening?" asked Agares, looking around at the area where there was no one except himself.

’An illusion? Did she cast an illusion on me?’ asked Agares, curious.

As Agares took a step forward, he was startled by a small village nestled beneath a grassy hill, a village where villagers lived happily. That became Agares’ next stop.

The closer Agares walked to the village, the clearer it became that the village had been destroyed and burned to the ground.

Agares stopped in his steps when he suddenly found himself in the center of the village.

"What is...?"

The sight of the villagers crucified on wooden stakes startled Agares. Their hands and feet were nailed to wooden planks, their necks were entangled in barbed wire, and they were not wearing any clothes, neither men nor women.

"All demons must perish!" said someone from the gray sky.

Agares turned around. He saw seven people flying in the sky, wearing golden armor on their bodies. Not only the armor, but their weapons also seemed familiar to Agares.

"Swords, spears, maces, scythes, arrows, priest staffs, mage staffs!"

"Are they Divine Knights?!" Agares exclaimed in shock.

Agares looked around him again. The dead did not have the form of ordinary demons—large bodies, terrifying faces, red eyes, and bat wings.

"What is really happening?"

"Did you see everything, Agares?" Louise asked, her voice audible but Agares did not know where she was.

FLICK!

With a flick of her finger, the place turned into a vast plain with human settlements slowly inhabiting the former village. One by one, humans came from all corners of the continent and settled in the village.

They farmed, raised livestock, and built their lives there. Starting as a small village, it grew into a district, then a small town, then a large city, then a province, then a kingdom, and finally a great empire.

Agares looked shocked. He never expected that the center of the Great Empire came from a demon village that was destroyed by the 7 Divine Knights. It really hit Agares’ mind and heart.

"What happened? Why did the Divine Knights kill the demons?" asked Agares, shocked.

FLICK!

Louise flicked her finger again, returning the illusion to its original state. Agares saw that he was back in Louise’s room, still holding a glass of wine in his hand.

"What was that?" asked Agares.

"The beginning of the war between humans and demons," explained Louise.

Agares narrowed his eyes. He focused his attention on the back of the woman’s hand, but unfortunately, Louise was wearing black gloves that made it difficult for Agares to see the patterns on her hand.

"If you want to know, this continent is the demon continent. Those humans who came here were outcasts from the kingdom beyond the continent," Louise answered.

"They refused to live alongside the demons. They believed their status was far superior to that of the demons."

"The Divine Knights emerged; they were the manifestation of humanity’s power. With the Divine Knights, humans began their conquest."

Agares listened intently. Louise explained that the demon race was continuously defeated, their villages and cities conquered by humans until a turning point came: the Demon Clan Union.

The three great Demon Clans united and built the first demon empire. They took the name Athanor, which meant "brave above the sky" in their language.

"Humans built their kingdoms on demon territory, and the demon clans united to defeat the humans,"Louise said.

"The first Human-Demon War broke out. Once again, humans won the war, reducing the demons’ territory."

Louise explained in detail about the Human-Demon Wars that had taken place. Agares listened. In total, there had been four wars.

The Human-Demon Wars I-IV, each war occurred at different times and durations. Agares nodded.

He had heard everything, but he was still confused about why Louise was telling him all of this.

"It’s because you need to know," Louise replied.

"At present, the Princess has forbidden me from explaining the reason to you. However, she is confident that you will find out one day."

"The most important thing for you right now is to improve your abilities. You can take on adventurer missions or solo missions to kill monsters."

Agares fell silent. That had indeed crossed his mind regarding how to improve his skills. Last time, he had managed to level up after defeating a level three monster. Monsters of that high level only existed beyond the borders.

"I can’t take adventurer missions with my status as a saber," Agares explained.

Louise smiled. She had already obtained information about Agares from Officer Goro long before she met him in person. She had also guessed that Agares would complain about his job as a saber.

She took something from her desk drawer and handed it to Agares. Agares gasped, not knowing what to do with the red token.

"What is this?" asked Agares.

"It’s a noble token from the Thorn Family. Use it to leave here and visit the City of Berdiver. The Thorn Family is waiting for you there," said Louise.

’The Thorn Family? Wait, I feel like I’ve heard that name before,’ asked Agares.

Pushing that thought aside, Agares put the token away while thanking Louise. Louise invited Agares to stay the night here, as she believed the situation in the city was currently unfavorable.

"I will prepare a private room for you."

"Once the situation in the city has settled down, you may leave."

Agares nodded, bowing his head to Louise, "Thank you, Miss Louise."
