Chapter 19: Chased by City Soldiers

Agares returned to the blacksmith’s shop, following the tomboyish female employee. The deeper Agares entered the shop, the more equipment he saw.

What was on display were not the best items; the best items were always kept inside and stored in special wooden boxes, like one of the swords they showed Agares.

"I see the quality of your swords isn’t as good as your skill. It’s not balanced," the woman replied, pointing to another sword inside the wooden box—the best sword ever made by that blacksmith shop.

The man looked ahead and saw the sword clearly. The hilt was made of animal skin with a touch of gold, and The blade was a bright gray color that reflected Agares’ face like a mirror.

The tomboyish woman tested the sword’s sharpness. She provided a cucumber and dropped it right onto the sharp blade. Surprisingly, the cucumber was cut in half.

Agares was taken aback, not expecting the blade to cut the cucumber with such ease. The man approached and stood right next to the wooden box containing the sword. Without hesitation, the girl handed the sword to Agares to try.

When he held it, he was shocked to find that it felt heavier than his own sword. Not only that, the blade also felt sturdy and strong, not easily shaking or swaying when swung.

"It’s a good sword," praised Agares.

"I already said so. That sword is good, better than yours," said the tomboyish woman. Agares hated to admit it, but what the woman said was completely true.

Agares immediately asked about the sword’s price. The woman paused for a moment, then turned around and went into the back room to talk to the shop owner.

Agares waited quite a while for the woman, but soon she returned with a burly, bald man. Why did all blacksmiths have bald heads?

"So, you want to buy that sword?" the bald man asked. Agares cleared his throat.

"Actually, I made that sword for someone in the past. He wanted the best sword of the best. I spent ten years making it," the man replied, crossing his arms with his eyes fixed on Agares and the iron sword.

"However, I don’t know where he is. He never came to claim his sword," the man said.

"So, can I have it?" Agares asked.

The woman turned her head, looking at the blacksmith. The man firmly said no. He would only hand over the sword to the person who had ordered it, even if the customer was dead.

"I can take the place of the customer. I will pay the equivalent of the sword’s price," Agares replied.

"If that’s the case, you must provide 10 gold coins and some valuable materials equal to the materials of a level three monster. If you—"

Agares interrupted him and gathered all the materials the man had requested. He had a total of 10 gold coins and one valuable material from a level three monster. The bald man looked shocked, never expecting Agares to have the material.

"How did you get this?" the bald man asked.

For some people, obtaining 10 gold coins might be easy, but not materials from a level three monster.

In front of him, he saw an Ironback Carapace and a Centipede Antenna. From his quick check, both were materials that came from level three monsters.

"Where did you get these materials, sir?" asked the man, but Agares chose to remain silent.

He reached out his hand and held the sword that was still in the wooden box, looking very confident.

"I’m not required to tell you about that, am I?" asked Agares.

The bald man was cornered. He couldn’t ask any further questions because the agreement had already been made.

Agares had provided the materials he needed, which meant that the bald man couldn’t hold back any longer.

Agares took the sword and handed his damaged sword to the woman. With the new sword, Agares no longer needed his old one.

"Do you want to sell this sword to us?" asked the woman. Agares turned his head.

"If you think it can still be used after being repaired, then I will sell it," replied Agares.

The woman and the blacksmith shop owner took Agares’ black-bladed sword and examined its details.

It was clear that the sword was of medium quality, which meant that its price would drop by 30% if it had been used before.

"Since the blade is worn out and this sword has been used before, I will buy it for four silver coins. How about it?" asked the bald man.

"That’s fine."

The man nodded. He took out four silver coins and handed them to Agares. Agares took the money and walked away.

He still felt annoyed because the system in his body prevented him from using any weapon other than a sword.

The woman and the bald man stepped out. They were startled to see that Agares had vanished from the main street of the city. This made the bald man act immediately.

"You go quickly to the military post. Tell them that this saber monster is in the city," replied the bald man.

"Eh? Are we going to chase him too?" asked the tomboy woman, surprised.

"That man’s head is worth 1,000 gold coins by the Caer Vireth Palace. If we can get that man, we will become nobles and the richest people in this city," replied the bald man.

Tempted by the opportunity to get money, the woman responded with a nod. She hurriedly left the blacksmith’s shop to report this incident to the soldiers on guard at the military post.

As she tried to entrust the report to her employee, Agares suddenly appeared behind the bald man. Agares’ gaze was sharp and piercing, as if he had heard their conversation.

"W-Why are you here—"

STAB!

Agares pulled his new sword from its sheath and thrust the tip into the bald man’s body. This shocked the bald man and seriously wounded him, with Agares’ sword even piercing his chest.

"W-What are you... doing?" the bald man asked.

"You were trying to report me to those soldiers. I won’t let you do that!" Agares shouted.

In one swift motion, Agares pulled the sword out and let the bald man collapse forward, falling lifelessly with a gaping hole in his stomach.

The bald man lay dead, his dark essence floating forward toward Agares.

Agares reached out his hand to receive the dark essence. In total, Agares had collected 7 dark essences.

[DING! Congratulations, Agares. You have obtained Dark Essence]

[Total: 7]

Not only did he obtain the Darkness Essence, Agares crouched down and reached into the man’s pants pocket and took his magic pouch.

He may have been a criminal, but he would not have killed them if they had not started it first.

Agares certainly did not want anyone else to know of his presence. He went into a small alley and hid there.

At the end of the small alley, he found a small wooden house with a small family living in it.

"Who are you?" asked the young woman, standing in the front yard of her house, cradling her baby.

Agares covered the woman’s mouth and pulled her into the house. The man locked the door and closed the windows and curtains, making it impossible for anyone outside to see inside house.

"Where is your husband?" asked Agares, slowly pulling his hand away from the woman’s mouth.

"He’s at work. Who are you?!" snapped the woman.

"I won’t kill you if you agree to cooperate with me," explained Agares.

"Cooperate? What do you mean?"

Shortly afterward, Agares faintly heard heavy footsteps from the front yard. The man peeked through the curtain’s gap, witnessing around 12 fully armed soldiers approaching the house.

"Tell them I’m not here," Agares said firmly, in a low voice.

The woman fell silent, her expression a mix of confusion, anger, and fear. Finally, she gathered her courage, opened the door, and greeted one of the soldiers.

"Good afternoon, miss. We’re here to ask if you’ve seen a man in a black robe here?" the soldier asked sternly.

"A man in a black robe? Was he carrying a sword?" asked the woman, and the soldier nodded.

The woman glanced behind her, preferring to obey Agares’ orders for the sake of her life and her child’s. Taking a deep breath, she told them a lie.

"I saw him pass by that road and jump into the river there," replied the woman.

"The river current, huh? Alright. Thank you very much, miss," said the soldier, and the woman closed the door again.

Slowly, one by one, the soldiers walked in the other direction to follow the river current leading out of the city. The woman told Agares that she had done what he had asked, and she also opened the curtains to let light into her house.

"Thank you," said Agares.

"Do you mind if I rest here for a while?" asked Agares.

"You must hurry. My husband will be back in three hours."

"One hour is enough for me to rest," explained Agares.

He tapped his magic pouch and threw a black pouch containing 10 silver coins toward the woman.

The woman was shocked when she saw the money, and she immediately asked Agares why he was giving her money.

"Consider it a gift for helping me. Use the money for your needs, especially your baby," explained Agares.

"Of course. I am very grateful to you, sir."

"Now, go. I need some time alone."
