Chapter 240: Who Grabbed Her Hand
Chapter 240: Who Grabbed Her Hand
Dani was up early to finish her duties around the palace. It was mostly due to the fact that she had to make adjustments to their Queen’s schedule because of another delay to her prior engagement today.
"Wizard Lurio and Seer Tarah will be arriving today, but we already have Zoran’s blood sample," Zaila snorted.
Dani took note of that. Dahlia had indeed given them the blood sample around midnight saying that Zoran had visited her.
"Those two seem to be in a relationship," Zaila continued as she helped her in segregating the documents their Queen had to see.
"Seer Tarah might have a vision of what’s to come once she touches Dahlia, so their travel here is still necessary," Dani remarked. "Also, I’ll have to ask her to help look into Abel’s past." It was a good opportunity to do so too. She might as well help Abel find out his origins.
"His past?" Zaila curiously asked. "What about it?"
Instead of replying, Dani simply gave her friend a knowing look that she was sure her fellow shadow maiden would easily understand.
"I can’t believe it. Why bother letting me know about it if you won’t give me the details?" Zaila whined. "The curiosity will kill me!"
"You were always curious, Zaila, but look at how well and healthy you are," Krisha chuckled. "Stop whining and help us work for a change."
Smiling, Dani simply shook her head as she let the two banter. Making sure to do her duties, she quickly wrapped up her daily tasks before leaving for dance practice.
She sighed as she made her way to her designated practice hall. If it wasn’t for the Coupling Rites she had with Abel... If only it wasn’t going to be attended by high-ranking officials and powerful clans, then she wouldn’t bother performing well for it in the first place! Dancing seductively was something she really didn’t fancy. She would’ve rather done a sword dance if it was allowed!
She then chuckled to herself as she imagined doing the sword dance in front of Abel.
"I wonder what comes to your mind whenever you suddenly laugh like a crazy lady while walking alone..."
Dani stopped herself from being surprised. As usual, Abel appeared out of nowhere, and she simply shrugged as she let him do his thing.
"Well, I just imagined doing the sword dance instead of your Coupling dance..." Dani snorted.
"You’re probably thinking about decapitating me during that sword dance," Abel hummed as he started walking with her.
"Absolutely," Dani muttered with a smile. For a while, they walked until she found herself turning to him and asking, "Where are you going anyway? This isn’t the way to the throne hall."
"The royal court meeting will be delayed, so I don’t see the point in staying there while the king isn’t yet around..." Abel replied. "The Queen Mother will be there as well, so I believe she’ll handle everything regardless. Knowing that my presence is clearly no longer required, especially since I’ll only hear the same blabbering anyway. It will only waste my precious time, so instead, I’ll just-"
Dani stopped as Abel halted in his tracks. She followed his gaze, and from there she saw Dahlia approaching them.
"Abel!" Dahlia cheerfully greeted with a bright smile. "It’s been a while... Oh, my apologies!" She suddenly offered a curt bow as she added, "I heard you’re already a Chancellor. I’m so happy for you!"
Dani raised an eyebrow at that. Right, Abel was promoted the moment King Nikolai was crowned king. He had personally chosen him not just because he was a close friend, but because of his remarkable contribution to the kingdoms and excellent civil service the moment he passed the exam and entered the palace. From what she could recall, he started from the very bottom before working his way up the ranks...
"Lady Dahlia. I’m glad to see you so well," Abel greeted with a half smile.
Dani frowned at Abel’s response. He looked like he was so caught off guard. And based on their interaction, it looked like they only met just now. Didn’t Abel visit Dahlia? It had already been days since she arrived at the palace.
"You two should catch up..." Dani suggested with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. She didn’t feel the thought of Abel and Dahlia being together, but she at least had enough common sense to ignore it. "I’ll be excusing myself."
Turning around, Dani thought to herself, ’I can’t believe I can be this possessive when I know that Abel isn’t serious with me. He’s only doing this because he wants to escape the Queen Mother...’
Shrugging, she was about to walk away when she felt Abel’s familiar grip grab her by the wrist.
"Wait for me..."
His voice rang in her ears. Frowning, she turned around to face him.
"Lady Dahlia, I’ll visit you one of these days so that the two of us can talk over some snacks like old times," Abel addressed the other person in the scene with them with a courteous smile. "For now, let me attend to my prior engagement."
"Of course. You two should go," Dahlia kindly nodded. "I have some duties to attend to as well anyway."
Dani didn’t see it coming, but she was obviously happy with how Abel didn’t abandon her. She then gulped when she felt his fingers interlock with hers. She was trying her best not to smile at that.
"It’s not like you had a prior engagement with me," Dani meekly pointed out, not bothering to pull her hand away from his. He was the one who grabbed her hand, so why would she bother undoing that? Either way, she was already getting used to it anyway. "Where exactly are you going?"
"I’m here to watch you practice and see if it’s good enough for the Coupling Rites," Abel nonchalantly replied. "Besides, you asked me to continue where we left off, so let’s do just that during your break."
"Very well. Anyway, how did you and Dahlia’s family get in contact?" Dani asked, moving the topic away before her cheeks burned too much. Besides, she was curious since Abel had sponsored the Benett Family for generations since the day he became a vampire. "I heard you owe the Benett Family."
"Yes. For almost nine generations now actually. The Benett Family saved me that night when I lost Father Bert, my wife, and my unborn child. They took me in and brought me to Valcrez then," he began. "They were merchants who settled here, and because of the tragedy I encountered, I desired nothing but to become strong. I trained hard, but being human wasn’t enough for me so I sought immortality."
"Oh, that’s when Lord Fritz entered the picture, right?!" Dani asked with her sparkling eyes.
"Yes?" Abel snorted with a frown. "Why is your expression like that whenever you hear or mention Fritz anyway?"
"Well, I’ve heard so much about him, and I truly adore that man!" she beamed. "He’s the head of the Bureau of Astronomy, and I heard from Taro that he has superb skills in being a spy too. That’s why His Majesty always sends him on important and crucial missions!"
"Do you always believe what you hear?" he scoffed. "Last time I checked... He’s just a Scion who loves to wave a fan over himself.
