Chapter 233: Investigation
They were about to leave when Fritz suddenly stopped and turned back.
"What’s wrong?" Laura questioned.
"Dammit Luis! Why are you only telling me this now?!" he erupted in anger out of the blue. It looked like Fritz was having a telepathic conversation with someone, and whatever he had just learned seemed to have pissed him off.
Before anyone could grasp the situation, a voice, young and authoritative, sliced through the air. "You are all under arrest in the name of His Majesty, King Nikolai!" Laura blinked in surprise. The voice belonged to a young man who looked about nineteen or younger with striking white hair.
"Luis!" Fritz roared in recognition. Fritz knew the man and obviously, these two didn’t get along given the way Fritz was cursing and fuming at the man right now.
Laura’s jaw dropped as she watched everyone get arrested by mysterious men in disguise who suddenly surrounded all the enemies. She even recognized some faces that she had seen in the black market before.
’Are they royal guards?’ Laura thought.
Fritz, still fuming, marched directly toward Luis, his anger practically radiating off him. Laura followed Fritz with bated breath to see this vampire, Luis, face Fritz’s wrath.
"Bastard!" Fritz seethed, face flushed with rage. "Why the hell didn’t you inform me about this?!"
"I did inform you," Luis calmly and nonchalantly responded.
"Yes, you informed me right before you showed up! That is not how it works! Taro always informs me in advance!" Fritz’s frustration escalated with each word.
"Well, I’m not Taro, Milord. His Majesty suddenly assigned all of Taro’s responsibilities to me. I see no reason to waste precious time on advance briefings, particularly in urgent situations such as this.," Luis justified with a sly grin.
"You! You’re making this personal, Luis. I will report your insubordination to Nikolai!"
"You must be mistaken, Milord. Why would I take this personally? The operation was a success and that should be our focus. His Majesty is very busy right now especially with the full moon approaching. Not to mention all the pending cases that need to be solved. I believe it would be unwise to burden him with trivial matters, wouldn’t you agree, Lord Fritz?"
Laura’s eyebrows raised in intrigue. The formal titles and the mocking tone Luis used had her curious about their relationship.
"You... If something like this happens again, Luis... I’m telling you, I won’t let it slide," Fritz warned before turning to leave.
Laura approached Luis, and he met her gaze with a calm demeanor. "You must be Lady Laura. I am Luis, one of His Majesty’s Shadow Knights, and a Secret Royal Inspector of Valcrez," he introduced himself formally with a brief bow.
"Oh, you know me..." she murmured.
"Yes, I’ve heard about you from the Queen’s shadow maidens in the palace," Luis answered.
"Laura!" she flinched at Fritz’s voice from behind. Laura offered Luis a curt bow and said, "It’s nice meeting you, Milord. I have to go now."
There she quickly walked towards Fritz’s whose face was still gloomy.
"What’s the deal between you two? Why would he bypass you like that?" Laura questioned as soon as they were far from the place.
"It happened a long time ago. His woman had crawled into my bed..." Fritz directly answered catching her off-guard. He opened his fan and started using it to cool himself. "It has been a long time since then but I don’t know why he’s not over it yet! It’s not even my fault! I was so drunk at the time that I don’t even remember what happened that night!"
"Were you two good friends before?" Laura asked.
Fritz let out a heavy sigh. "Yes..."
"Well, he probably felt betrayed. I mean, how could you do that with his woman? Being drunk is not an excuse. Wait... Is that why you’re not drinking any alcohol?!"
Now, that made sense. She would always meet Lord Fritz inside a tavern but she had never seen him drink alcohol. She found it funny that he would only drink fresh juice but never dared question the man. Whenever they went out together, it was always her finishing up the alcohol and him carrying her back.
Fritz’s expression confirmed her suspicion. "I stopped drinking alcohol after that incident. That woman claimed that something happened between us but I was innocent. I even proved it to Luis but our relationship drifted apart. Luis and I never talked after that... Now that bastard is being petty. He could have told me about this so we wouldn’t have wasted our time following that informant!" he grumbled with irritation.
"Maybe it’s not really intentional. Why not ask the King directly? Luis did say that all of Taro’s works were suddenly turned over to him. Don’t jump to conclusions without getting more valid information," Laura pointed out.
Lord Fritz stopped walking and she followed suit. He turned to face her with an intensity that made her feel self-conscious.
"What?!" she asked with a crumpled expression, wondering why he was scrutinizing her so closely.
"Well, I guess you’ll become a good and reliable Minister of Justice in the future..." he teased, flashing a wide smile.
Laura smiled back and continued walking, with her head held high as she stated, "Of course, I will. So look forward to that. I’ll soon enter the palace, be with my Queen, attain that position, and most importantly, kick Minister Haman’s butt out!"
Fritz chuckled.
"So, where are we going now?" Laura asked.
"Where else? We need to get back to tracking down Nimue. His Majesty is taking a bold step by secretly arresting anyone connected to Nimue. They’ll be taken to a secure location known only to His Majesty and his Shadow Knights, where they’ll be questioned and protected until they face formal trial and receive their corresponding punishments," Fritz explained in a serious tone.
"That means we can get involved in the questioning right?" Her eyes sparkled with anticipation, but her expression shifted to a squint when Fritz cursed.
"Luis is handling the case now, and I doubt he’ll let me get involved with what he’s working on..." Fritz scoffed.
"Why not check if he’ll actually not let you get involved? You’re a part of this investigation as the King’s head spy, so it’s only natural for you to participate."
"Let’s get going. Take me to that place where they’re confined. I’m almost there, I can feel I will soon get to Haman," Laura suggested while playfully blinking her eyes at Fritz.
"Fine. Come here..." Without warning, Fritz suddenly pulled her close, his arm securely around her waist, and her face pressed against his chest.
"Can you bring someone in your mist form?" she questioned knowing that not all Scions could do that.
"Of course, I can..." Fritz boasted. "Now, hold on to me tightly and don’t let go..."
