Chapter 232: One Evidence
Back in the streets of the capital, Laura and Fritz were hard at work tracking down the warlock Nimue. Last they heard, he was somewhere in the city’s poorer regions, and they could only hope that they’d get an even better lead sooner rather than later.
"How did this guy even manage to do it?" Laura couldn’t help but ask Fritz as she sighed. Currently, they were both staking out a suspicious building that they suspected hid the warlock. "Did he give something to this Rosela woman that somehow made it possible for her to control the King?"
"Based on a few evidence we gathered and what we know so far, that’s exactly what happened," Fritz replied even as he was busy looking at the building in front of them for any discrepancies. "It was a potion that did the trick. Apparently, Rosela spiked His Majesty’s morning drink that day, allowing her to proceed with her plans."
Laura shrugged at that, and predictably, the air between them settled back down to boring nothingness as they continued their observations. She knew the answer to her own question, of course, but there was just nothing else to do at the moment beyond speculating and hoping that something would come up. Sure, they moved ever so closer to finding and arresting the warlock with each day that passed, but there were some days that progress just moved slower than others.
And to her disappointment, that day was one of those many days.
"I really hope that something happens today," Laura whined as she rested her head on her hand. "I don’t want this day to be just us watching this empty building for hours at a time."
"But it’s still a part of our task, Lady Laura," Fritz scoffed beside her. "Besides, weren’t you just bragging about how you’re going to replace Lord Haman?"
Laura rolled her eyes at that. "What can I say? It’s a decently achievable goal," she humble-bragged with a scoff. "Besides, it’s fairly obvious that the man has dealings with the warlock. The moment either one of them slips up, it’s over for him, and any sort of status he has would be up for grabs."
"A very respectable goal, at least, even if it’s coming from a vain angle," Fritz chuckled. "Still, I must admit that your thoughts have merit. After all, you did piece together the fact that they both have similar styles of dealings and operations."
Laura preened at the obvious praise. While it wasn’t the first time she heard it, hearing it from the man who was just adamant about criticizing her skills only made it feel all the more sweeter. After all, she was the one who noticed how much Lord Haman and Nimue’s paperwork organization was practically the same when they raided one of their safehouses. She was also the one who caught Lord Haman’s handwriting being used in one of the warlock’s many forgeries.
Really, the more she uncovered, the more it looked like this Lord Haman was just asking to be caught and replaced. It almost looked like he wanted them to find him, actually...
"Say, what happened to our asset that we asked to scope out the illegal potion trade?" she ended up asking out of both concern and boredom.
"Him? He hasn’t contacted us yet," Fritz casually replied. "Why? Having some thoughts?"
"It’s just that... When is he scheduled to try and shoot his shot?"
"Just a few hours from now," Fritz frowned as he replied, a thought coming to him as he realized what she was planning. "Wait, are you suggesting we go there ourselves instead? Are you that bored?"
"I’m not that stupid," she scoffed. "No, I just want to scope out the deal ourselves. I have a feeling that we’re missing something."
Fritz raised a brow, but he inevitably shrugged as he replied. "Very well. It’s not like we’ll get any success here today anyway."
With their decision made, the two of them made their way to the place where they knew the meet for the illegal potion trade would take place. Taking a glance at the surroundings, they hid themselves in one of the many rooftops before settling in for the long haul.
"I sure hope that feeling of yours will get us somewhere," Fritz silently scoffed as they watched the trade taking place. "I wouldn’t want our journey here to be for nothing."
"I for one hope that what I’m feeling is for nothing," Laura grumbled as she kept her eyes peeled. "No news is better than what’s keeping me on edge."
In truth, she had a feeling that something was about to happen. As opposed to the boredom of earlier, the hairs on her neck were standing on edge as they watched the illegal potion deal go down.
"You have the gold?" the illegal trader asked their asset.
"I have it right here," their asset quickly replied. "Just show me the goods so that we can get this over with."
"Our asset’s being fidgety for some reason," Fritz mumbled beside her. "That’s not a good sign, especially since he said to us that he’s the real deal."
"Exactly," Laura frowned. "Just keep alert."
A few beats passed, and the deal went ahead as scheduled. Like what they expected, the dealer responded to gold well enough and gave their asset the potion. At the very least, this was one evidence that they really needed to try and pursue this avenue of-
"Lady Laura, we need to move."
Fritz’s alarmed voice suddenly brought Laura back to reality as the man beside her moved to pull her out of sight. Sure enough, her attention was quickly diverted to the fact that there were now multiple people seemingly surrounding their asset.
"What’s going on?"
"I smell a trap," Fritz explained as he moved to prepare himself. "They’re cornering the asset as we speak, and we’ll have to get him out if we want that evidence intact, as well as our lives if what I’m suspecting is true."
