Chapter 115: Drinking Fellow (2)
Dani’s eyes widened when Abel pulled her close to him and casually put his arm on her shoulders.
"Yes, we’ll use my usual private room," Abel remarked with a curt bow. "Deliver us the best drinks you have. We’re planning to get drunk the whole night, so make sure there will be no disturbances." He then gave her a mocking smile as he guided her to their supposed room. "Come now. You started this, my drinking fellow."
Dani pursed her lips at his behavior, but she didn’t bother to debate him further since she didn’t want to cause a commotion. Instead, she let Abel’s arm linger over her shoulders. It was the first time for her to get this close to a man, and she felt a bit weird about it for some reason.
As soon as they were in a private room, Dani immediately yanked Abel’s arm off her shoulders.
"How dare you touch me!" she exclaimed with a dark glare on her face as she sat on the nearest chair.
Despite her outburst, Abel simply chuckled, and she was about to retort when a few servants knocked on their door. Letting them in, they quickly served them the drinks and some snacks that were expected of their supposed arrangements.
"A while ago, you looked sincere in saying that you’ll accompany me for a drink so that I’ll have someone who knows my secret with Rosela," he grunted as he started pouring a few drinks into their glasses. "That you’ll be my drinking fellow to ease away my misery from losing her... So here. Drink with me!"
Abel promptly downed his drink in one shot, Dani shrugged and started drinking with him quietly. She had planned to wait a bit before leaving him alone for a while to talk to Laura, but she could probably do so while having a few drinks of her own.
"Since when did your secret relationship with Rosela start anyway?" Dani asked after a while of drinking. "Who approached who first?"
She watched Abel drink at her question, emptying and promptly pouring himself several other cups as if to ignore her.
’Is he really planning to ignore me?’ she mused with lifted brows. Seeing his lack of reaction, she stood up and said, "Wait here, I’ll be right back."
Without waiting for his reply, Dani walked out of the room to meet with Laura outside. Looking around, she immediately spotted Laura and followed her quietly to another private room.
Going inside, Dani sat on a chair opposite Laura and immediately, she was greeted with a question she didn’t want to answer.
"So, are you and the Chancellor in a-"
"It’s not what you think!" Dani quickly refuted as she grabbed Laura’s cup and downed her beer in one shot.
"Why? You two looked good together," Laura teased.
Dani’s face crumpled as she hissed, "Stop with your teasing and let’s get down to business. I can’t stay for too long..."
Nodding, Laura handed her what looked to be a magic purse. "Here. Tell Her Majesty that I will enter the Palace soon so I can reunite with you all," she instructed.
"By the way, Niran also has a letter inside it addressed to Her Majesty. As far as my observation goes, she seems to be living well enough. I mean, Prince Raul is providing her with everything she might need, and he’s proud of introducing her to everyone as her future wife."
She let out a small giggle as she added, "What perfect timing too since Niran has no family background in our kingdom at all for the Prince to even start investigating her history..."
Dani nodded in agreement. "That’s good. Also, while you sound confident in the coming exam, just in case, study this as well," she reminded Laura before giving her a rather thick tome.
"Her Majesty will oversee the National Civil Service Examination. You will participate as an Ebodian delegate sent by her, so you will have to prove your worth to all the Valcrezians. Show them that you’re more than qualified to be of service to the crown."
Laura frowned as she snorted, "You and your nagging... Must I remind you that I was always the one that had high scores whenever we took an exam in our kingdom?"
Dani scoffed at Laura’s blabbering. Shaking her head, she grabbed the magic purse that she brought with her and handed it to Laura. "Here... Study this as well."
"You could’ve just put the tome in here, you know," Laura grumbled.
"It’s to send a message," Dani cryptically scoffed. "Besides, Her Majesty was the one that compiled those notes for you to remember. Hopefully, they’ll be of help to you."
Laura simply accepted the studying material without a word. While she could’ve easily entered the palace as yet another one of Her Majesty’s ladies-in-waiting, Valcrez had a rule about not allowing the Queen’s personal handmaidens to join the National Civil Service Examination which was a requirement to get a higher position in the royal court.
Storing the purse, Laura let off a wide smile, which Dani quickly spotted and raised a brow to. "And why are you smiling like that?"
"I’m just excited to be reunited with you all again," Laura explained with a twinkle in her eyes. "Also, I can’t wait to be a part of the royal court. Ah... It’s long been a dream of mine to become a Minister, and I can’t wait to replace that Haman!"
Dani chuckled, "You still have a long way to go, Laura."
At that, Laura shrugged as she murmured, "I know, but I’ll work my way to the top and kick him out as soon as I can. He’s so undeserving! I mean, that position only became his because he was part of the Clan with an Exordium Council member!"
Dani simply sighed while Laura continued to talk trash about the Minister of Justice. There were actually two spots in the Minister’s Office that Her Majesty wanted to replace, but unfortunately, they only had one person ready to slot into those openings.
It was a good thing that one of it was in the Ministry of Justice which was in line with Laura’s liking and capabilities. The other one was in the Ministry of Rites led by Marion of the Rossi Clan.
Dani actually wanted to add the Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Minister Rory Rossi to the list of people to replace, but Her Majesty believed that the Minister deserved the position even though he was from a Clan of opposition.
After a few more discussions, Dani quickly took her leave and promptly returned back to where she left Abel.
"These things could’ve been prevented if he only paid enough attention to Rosela," Abel drunkenly hummed the moment she sat back on her chair. "And personally..."
"Well, I doubt that would be the case, Chancellor," Dani cut him off as she grabbed the nearest bottle and began drinking for herself. "For sure, Lady Rosela would’ve just managed to manipulate you the moment she got you under her palm. You’re blindly in love with her, and she’ll use that to her advantage."
She then let out a sigh, "Ah, I know it’s not right to talk bad about the dead, so I’ll just stop now before we go in circles. I’ll simply call you a fool until you finally come to your sense..."
