Chapter 83 - 83 77 The Dragon in the Magma
83: Chapter 77: The Dragon in the Magma 83: Chapter 77: The Dragon in the Magma Star Dragon Ridge outpost, tavern.
The sudden disappearance of the Undead had cooled down the normally bustling tavern.
Old Pete poured himself a drink and turned his gaze to the others.
Like locusts sweeping through, the Undead around the area had made it very safe, so other than choosing two people to patrol and keep watch at night, the rest were stationed here.
He looked at Miss Miko, who was studying a Magic Potion formula at the table, seemingly undistracted by anything, and everyone knew how highly the higher-ups valued her; they were almost at her beck and call.
Lian had long captured the attention of the men present, though Lord Lind hadn’t said anything.
Yet when Lian clung persistently to Lord Lind, everyone understood to keep their distance from her.
Aluna Momo either prayed or daydreamed, while actually everyone, including Old Pete, couldn’t understand why they kept this elder, who did nothing but eat and mutter, at the Star Dragon Ridge outpost.
“What is this?” Old Pete, holding his drink, leaned over the table: “You do it like this with your fingers, and then like that?”
“It’s called shuffling!” the questioned illustrated: “It’s a game often played by the Undead in the tavern.
The rules aren’t very complicated.
I’ll show you how to play!”
“Cards?
Of course.”
The Undead would gather to play cards suddenly or possibly use some pebbles to play a game that looked like chess but wasn’t.
They engaged in various activities, yet none of the Undead slept.
Everyone was used to the way the Undead did things.
“How about we play cards and drink?”
“How do you play?”
“Play as you drink.
The more you lose, the more you’ll understand!”
The drink was brewed by the Undead, full of residue and rather plain tasting, but fortunately, there was plenty of it, almost like drinking water.
After a few rounds, Old Pete had mastered the game before his head became too heavy.
“King, queen, knight, and…” Old Pete held two cards: “Why are the two jesters the most powerful?”
“It’s the joker!
You don’t understand!”
The argument escalated into a quarrel.
Bang, the tavern door was pushed open, the cold wind slammed the door against their faces, but then the hot air rolling off the person who entered blasted them with heat, sobering up the drunken soldiers.
Miss Miko, indifferent to everything, lifted her head.
Lian had already stood up and walked towards that person.
The mumbling Aluna Momo continued to gaze through her saggy-skinned eyes, which now sparkled, especially since the others followed Lind into the tavern.
“We no longer have gods to pray to, but we still have beings to whom we can pray…” Aluna Momo’s eyes grew brighter, those murky eyes looking sharp and spirited for the first time.
Lind strode in, snatching the cards from Old Pete’s hand: “Who taught you to mix up climbing and landlord in play!”
“Also, it’s called a wild card, not a joker.
It represents the sun and the moon.”
The crowd’s attention, however, had already shifted to the two soldiers who had followed Lind into the door.
There wasn’t much change in their physique, but they emitted a wave of heat, unable to contain themselves like Lind did.
The two men were like walking furnaces, their heat startling.
They had all succeeded!
This was a journey they had resigned to die on.
Miss Miko had informed them beforehand when they took the Magic Potion that success depended on luck, and failure seemed almost inevitable.
Unless they could, like the Undead, keep dying and resurrecting.
The fact that they all succeeded now might mean the gods still cared…
no, that’s not right!
“We are watched over by glory!”
Glory will be forged by us, so we watch over ourselves!
…
…
Ever since learning the location of Dragon Tooth Mountain Path in the east, the Undead had agreed on a unified direction, advancing grandiosely, dressed as Wanderers.
Scavengers encountered along the way would avoid them from afar.
Dragon Tooth Mountain Path, the westernmost part of the Red Dragon Foothills, appeared like a fire dragon opening its wide mouth.
Though the coldest part of the season had slowly passed, it still felt unusual with the scorching wind blowing out of the mountain path at this time.
In the dead of night, on the charred stony path, a small figure braced against the hot wind to venture deeper into the mountain path.
His body was exhausted, his spirit at its limit.
It was not a short distance from Prey Town to the Red Dragon Mountain Range, and he had to dodge various dangers along the way.
If it weren’t for the support of the Magic Potion, he would never have made it this far.
The figure stood up, inhaling the scorching wind, pulled out the last bottle of Magic Potion, and swallowed it along with the hot wind under the power of the moon.
Being near the volcano, opening his mouth was unpleasant; the ash filling the narrow mountain path was thick enough to obstruct vision.
As he opened his mouth, it entered swiftly like knives stabbing down his throat.
“Cough, cough!” He couldn’t help coughing.
His nose was so itchy uncontrollably sneezing.
Fortunately, his body had regained strength, though he had to forcibly endure the mental exhaustion.
He kept walking forward.
Although he had never been on the Dragon Tooth Mountain trail before, he had heard many legends about it, such as the fire calamity hidden within and other apocalypse survivors, so he proceeded with extra caution.
“Who?”
A shout suddenly came from the side, his vision blurred, and he found himself pinned to the ground by his arm, the sudden cold against his neck made him dare not move.
“I, I come from Prey Town, I am under Lord Lock, the mayor of Prey Town, I-I-I’ve come to find Lady Serene!
We have already sworn allegiance to Lady Serene!”
“Take him to see Lady Serene.”
He was pulled up, only then seeing the person in front of him clearly.
Dressed in light armor, with bare arms, his face covered with a helmet that had an iron cage fabric over the mouth and nose.
In his hand was a longsword that radiated a cold light.
This person was terrifying, faster and stronger than himself even when he had taken the Magic Potion!
“Yes, take me to see Lady Serene!
The mad wolf is going mad!” he kept shouting until he was punched in the ribs and finally shut his mouth.
The Dragon Tooth Mountain trail was not just a single path, winding and turning like entering a labyrinth; had he not been intercepted along the way, he really didn’t know how long he would have walked, and he might have died here.
However, as they walked, something felt increasingly off.
“Sir, where are we going?”
The air became hotter and more oppressive; sweat uncontrollably dripped down, and his body felt like it was being forced out of more and more oil as if it were meat on a rack.
The darkness ahead was no longer pitch-black but fiery red.
Until at the corner, he saw bubbling, burbling lava, his eyes suddenly widened.
And ahead, a man with long hair and a well-built body was standing with his back to him.
“What’s wrong with the mad wolf?” The man turned around, his handsome face and slightly elongated ears made one’s mind drift.
So, there was still someone this handsome.
“Lady Serene!” The messenger knelt on the ground, but he hadn’t expected the ground to be as hot as an iron plate, instantly scalding him, making him scream in pain.
“Get up and talk,” Lady Serene turned her back to continue staring at the lava, seemingly reluctant to look at his disgrace.
“The mad wolf has subdued the Two-Headed People Wanderers, and our Lord Lock from Prey Town also wishes to serve you, but some people under his command seem to have caused trouble,” the messenger gathered his words, “The Wanderers and the mad wolf’s men had a conflict; they refuse to follow the mad wolf further, and the mad wolf, seeking power, wants Prey Town’s help to confront the Wanderers!”
“Sir, whether it’s us or the Wanderers, we have all sworn allegiance to you!
But the mad wolf is betraying your trust!”
His primary mission was to ensure Lady Serene intervened to prevent Prey Town and the Wanderers from going to war.
Lady Serene nodded slightly, “I know, I’ll head there after I catch this little guy.”
“Gulp,” the messenger glanced at the lava.
A little guy?
If it was rolling in the lava, it surely wasn’t a little guy.
“Let’s go,” the man who brought him tugged at him, saying, “Stay close to us.
Once Lady Serene has finished her business here, she will visit Prey Town.”
The messenger saw, whether it was the mysterious and handsome Lady Serene or the man in front of him, neither placed much importance on Prey Town or the Wanderers.
He nodded obediently.
Although he hoped that Lady Serene would act quickly, lest the mad wolf forcefully take action, he had no right to suggest otherwise and could only obediently follow.
They had not walked much farther.
“Roar!”
A thunderous roar suddenly came from the direction behind where Lady Serene was.
The messenger couldn’t help but widen his eyes, “Sir, was that sound just now, the ‘little guy’ Lady Serene mentioned?”
“Lady Serene will become the first Earth Dragon Knight of the Red Dragon Foothills,” the man’s eyes showed admiration, as if he could already see the scene of himself dominating the wilderness aboard the Earth Dragon.
So, the thing roaring in the lava was…
“A dragon?”
Gulp.
It indeed seems like submitting to Lady Serene was the absolutely right choice, Lord Lock!
