Chapter 521 - 422 Black Blood
Chapter 521: Chapter 422 Black Blood
In the desolate lands, far outside the great Stone Beast Fort, where resources were scarce, a beast-headed person clad in armor radiating a strong Abyssal Calamity aura strode forward.
Upon seeing his figure, various beast-headed and beastman individuals he encountered along the way immediately lowered their heads, fearing to attract the attention of the strong being wrapped in the Abyssal Curse.
In this land, "Titles" influenced many things. Following the power of the Beastmaster, "Titles" were like a clearly-defined pyramid of hierarchy.
And the "Abyss" was undoubtedly one of the most terrifying and top-ranked Titles.
No one wished to encounter the "Abyss."
Meeting such a mighty one in this remote backwater caused all around to whisper among themselves; perhaps something significant had happened? However, with the communication cut-off and information lagging here, even if something big had occurred, they would have no way of knowing.
"Lionheart endures! Why should those humans also receive the blessings of a Dominus!" The Abyssal black-armored beast-headed man entered the tavern and plopped down onto a chair, with several beastmen following close behind him.
The beastmen in the tavern, upon hearing his shout, trembled as they carried a barrel of wine over, then tucking their tails, they ran off.
Abyss, oh!
Another beastman shuffled over, slowly placing cups and only after setting them up did he dare to pour the wine from the barrel.
"Lord Black Blood," the beastman groomed his long fur, grabbed a wine glass, and took a swig, drenching his already matted fur, "perhaps we should head back first?"
Their mission was to capture a group of humans from the south; it was said that these people came from the east and carried a significant amount of treasures.
Yet none of that mattered, because the "King" who offered a reward for the humans wanted some information inside the humans’ minds, and Black Blood’s team only needed to bring the people back.
But to everyone’s surprise, those humans had succeeded in attracting the Beastmaster’s gaze, earning the right to survive in this land.
As the Beastmaster’s subjects often slaughtered each other, it would have been fine to continue the hunt, but the humans were extremely lucky to be protected within the territory of the "Corrupt King," who carried the Title of "Decay."
The two "Kings" had an average relationship, and Black Blood and his men dared not rashly barge into the territory to snatch the people away, and they couldn’t overpower them anyway, so they had to skulk over to the border.
Whether the humans were served directly on the dinner table as ingredients or kept chained for amusement was now irrelevant to Black Blood’s team, for he possessed only the power of a fourth-ring, never considering provoking a sixth-ring "King."
Glug, glug, glug, he drank down the wine, but the gloom in his heart could not be swept away.
Then, Black Blood’s ears twitched.
"Have you found those humans?"
Humans? Had the news spread this far? No! The capture of humans was supposed to be top secret.
Black Blood signaled to his subordinates with a look. They nodded and strode toward the kitchen.
Walls collapsed; dust flew everywhere.
The beast-headed chef, wearing an apron, spat blood and lay bewildered on the ground. He had merely stolen a bite while cooking; surely, it wasn’t that serious.
The pain came too quickly; his mind was still dazed.
"You just said, humans?" Black Blood turned around, the Abyss Aura on his body sharp as thorns combined with his body odor, incessantly jabbing at the noses of the people around, causing their nostrils to twitch uncontrollably.
"Yes, my lord, humans!"
The beast-headed chef dared not conceal anything and immediately recounted his experience of buying humans, then how the humans committed suicide, turning into ash and vanishing, cheating him of his beast teeth.
"Go, investigate those humans!" Black Blood was overjoyed.
Even if they were not the humans needed for the mission, capturing those delicious ingredients was enough to compensate for their expedition’s expenses.
Seeing the shivering beast-headed chef on the ground, Black Blood spat, "Waste!"
Even the frail humans could not be dealt with; how could they not be waste!
The investigation progressed faster than Black Blood had imagined. His subordinates were mostly second to third ring in power, which made them among the strongest in this poor, remote area, not to mention the occupational advantage they had.
"Lord Black Blood, we’ve found the humans’ tracks!"
"Speak carefully!" Black Blood had sent the beast-headed chef back to cook, the meal hadn’t even begun, and the investigation had already yielded results; it seemed that the humans were not far from his location, which was good news.
"The surrounding villages have all had incidents of human trafficking, and their fates were remarkably similar; after taking the money, they all killed themselves and turned to ash," the Beastman subordinate meticulously reported the findings of his investigation.
"Suicide? It must be the power of the Title," Black Blood shook his head, not believing such a notion.
Perhaps turning to ash was just the humans’ method of escape.
He had encountered similar situations, like when the human Wizard he was tracking suddenly vanished in a flash as he approached, only to reappear far away—Spatial Magic, of course.
Otherwise, how could it be explained? Surely those humans weren’t Undying Corpses.
"What else?" Black Blood inquired.
"They were most recently spotted in the desert to the northeast, and they even attacked a group of Beastmen."
"What?" Black Blood thought he must have misheard.
Humans attacking Beastmen?
Completely against the natural order!
As if I would believe that.
The reporting Beastman nodded, although he himself was reluctant to believe it: "It was a group of Scorpion Flea traders. The humans attacked the traders, and only one Scorpion Flea trader managed to escape. From what he said, it seems those humans attacked just to seize the Scorpion Fleas."
"Ha ha, bullshit!" Black Blood laughed out loud.
Scorpion Fleas? Worth a few coins, tops. Who would ever rob for such trifles?
"The surviving Beastman was captured by us."
"Bring him in!"
The Beastman brought in was hunched over, missing an arm, with his facial hair matted with clotted blood—pitiable to see.
"Great, great one!" Feeling the Abyss Aura emanating from the other party, the severely injured Beastman didn’t think twice before prostrating on the ground.
"Tell me about what happened in detail."
"We’re Scorpion Flea traders. Every year we take a batch of Scorpion Fleas from the Sand Pit Ranch to sell in the various Beast Fort Territories. It was on the way that we encountered five humans. They were armored and also had weapons, unified Golden Armor. They must have been an army."
"An army?" Black Blood’s heart stirred slightly. Could it be the Human Kingdom’s army sent to rescue the humans he was hunting?
No, that was impossible.
This place was far removed from the human world; unless they could send a million-strong army, there was no way they would penetrate this region.
"Could they be under the Corrupt King?" He had been hindered by the Corrupt King while pursuing humans, who seemed to have a different attitude towards them, so Black Blood immediately thought of this possibility.
"What about their strength?" Black Blood asked.
"Two of them were First Circle, and the other three hadn’t even reached the First Circle."
"Such a weak army?"
The basic Soldiers under the Corrupt King were at least of the First Circle, the main combat units even at the Second Circle, officers at the Third Circle, and even stronger ones had the Fourth Circle.
So, this human army likely had nothing to do with the Corrupt King.
"Did you attack them?" Black Blood inquired.
He knew all too well the nature of these traders; they would never miss a chance to make an easy profit, and human flesh was such a prized commodity. It would have been normal to capture and sell them upon sight.
Probably, the traders hadn’t expected the humans to fight back and even succeeded in killing them in return.
But these traders were around First Circle strength too; a dozen of them shouldn’t have lost to five humans. Something didn’t quite add up.
Even if the numbers were multiplied by ten, the outcome would certainly be that the Scorpion Flea traders would win.
Black Blood had racial confidence in the Beastmen; weak humans simply couldn’t fight back and win, so... was this trader daring to lie in his presence?
Feeling Black Blood’s scrutinizing gaze, the Scorpion Flea trader panicked: "No, we didn’t strike first, it’s true sir! They said they wanted to buy Scorpion Fleas, and we conducted the transaction as normal. But after buying them, they turned on us. We also fought back, and those five were killed, but then more and more human Soldiers surrounded us, and we were brutally beaten, ah!"
