Chapter 520: Chapter 421 Loyalty Firmer Than Steel
In Magic Land, the natives didn’t know the particularities of the Undead.
The information gap granted a sizable window of opportunity to the Undead, yet, it was distinctly an Undead maneuver to earn their first fortune by capitalizing on the notion that "humans are a delicious and rare ingredient."
"In any case, Undead are bound to become universally detested, so anything goes."
Lind’s mindset was very stable, even if the Undead didn’t resort to such tactics, they were bound to be at odds with most of the people in this land.
No one has heard of an ingredient trying to curry favor with a Predator.
Only a BOSS like himself would think outside the box and cherish the Undead like treasures, holding them in hand for fear of them escaping, keeping them close for fear of losing them. In short, he was afraid of them running away.
Whether new enemies would appear was uncertain, but one thing Lind was sure of was that if the Undead continued at this pace, all the nearby red name gathering places might not be able to resist striking first. It was always better to be prepared in advance than to be caught off guard when someone attacked.
It was necessary to start strengthening patrols now.
Lind also found communicating with the natives of Magic Land quite troublesome; the Undead, with their diode-like thinking, sought to exterminate red names, while defaulting to trust towards non-red names.
His own Undead were too naive, after all, non-red names could be attacked too. If you attack them, don’t they then become red names?
Humans, treated as rare and delicious ingredients, were unable to communicate normally, but Lind had many methods to extract the information he wanted from them by altering the nature of their relationship.
For instance, by making them captives, prisoners, or bodies awaiting castration, and so on.
When we hold the position of power, the other party will open up on their own.
...
The temporary new camp was set up in a canyon in the desert. The fortress-like terrain provided a lot of controllability.
At the top of the canyon, one could gaze upon a distant high tower.
William had been grinding his sword here for several days. He was considered one of the only two prudent individuals in the team. The other, more cautious than him, was Lind.
However, Lind’s sudden order to be ready for patrolling and defense had William confused. Since arriving in Magic Land, they had only met Lavee, and their relationship was quite good; where could enemies possibly come from?
Could it be that the sky again bore a huge monster known as the Soul Pecking Bird?
Looking down at the bustling Undead below, William’s expression was somewhat peculiar. These Undead seemed to be very interested in building a fortress that was easy to defend but difficult to attack, and conveniently, the majority in the team were Wizards who, using magic, rapidly constructed what quickly took shape as a fortress within a few days.
If there were any dangers that might arise, it would likely be due to the Undead alone.
"Finally got it sorted!" Dragon Scale Sword said, looking at the storefront before him, clapping his hands.
To enable Lind to set up shop and sell goods, they had erected a storefront immediately.
The next step was to inquire when Lind would open the Expedition Army’s store function. Everyone had acquired the local currency, "Beast Teeth," through various shady means but due to overly flashy maneuvers, they found themselves red-named and struggling to take a step. They had money but nowhere to spend it.
Now, they could only wait for Lind to open the shop so they could make their purchases.
Beast Teeth was the recognized local currency, and it could also be called silver coins or simply coins because of their irregular shape, which made detailed discernment of the exterior impractical.
The "Beast Teeth" could be used in a range of places, from the "Wilderness Ruins" to the "Beast’s Nest."
Their current location was within the Wilderness Ruins, at the border between the territories of two "Kings," but it was a shame they couldn’t gather more information. They were still in the dark, and Lavee didn’t know much either. He was just a native aspiring to become a "Sword Saint"...
Lind held two Beast Teeth in his hand, each containing a rather unique energy.
Don’t be fooled by the varying sizes and shapes of each beast fang; the energy contained within is the same, so beast fangs of different shapes and sizes can circulate as currency.
"Sir, when will the shop open?" The Undead was nagging again.
If it weren’t for the prevalence of red names throughout the desert, Lind suspected the Undead might very well abandon him for other powers.
Fortunately, there were "daily tasks," including the construction of defense fortresses and gathering intelligence, tasks that could hook the Undead and keep them from getting too bored.
"Protect the camp."
"Sir, are there any main quests?"
"Protect the camp."
"Damn, why have you started parroting? Is there some key plot point we haven’t triggered?"
"Sir? Damn, why aren’t you paying attention to me!"
Lind: I’m just an NPC; it’s only reasonable that I can’t respond to anything outside of the plot.
After repeating himself twice, Lind simply ignored them.
Have you finished your daily activities yet? You’re just wandering around aimlessly here. Be careful, or I’ll really open a shop and harvest your money and points!
As the "sole friendly NPC" of this land, Lind’s advantage was enormous, much more so than when he was in the Rand Kingdom.
Back then, Lind had to worry that the benefits he offered weren’t enough and that the Undead might defect to the "official" mayors of Newbie Village, so he had to frantically curry favor, offer various benefits, and struggle to recruit people.
However, the situation in the Magic Land had changed completely. Being the only NPC, the "officials" he could contend with hadn’t reached their hands in.
The Undead might be able to continue activities after leaving him, but they would definitely lack any game experience unless some deity appeared, killed Lind, and then directly gifted each of the Undead a set of Divine Equipment.
Otherwise, the Undead’s loyalty to Lind could surpass everything, even more firm than steel.
Just consider that his own den was still in the Rand Kingdom, and with the guilds, points, and the noble titles earned through hard-earned War Points, none of these could be easily given up.
Unable to activate the shop or open more quests, the Undead returned, disillusioned.
"Isn’t it obvious? It’s definitely because a key plot point hasn’t been triggered!" Moon Slash Blade continued with his task as he listened to his teammate’s complaints, applying Sword Oil to his blade with a serious expression.
Everything that appears in the game is surely pre-designed, and all of it has a deeper meaning; otherwise, why bother with modeling or coding this dialogue for the NPC? What the Undead need to do is dig into the plot!
Clang—!
The sword lay before his eyes, its engraved rune markings filling with a layer of red in the firelight.
Cool!
"So what you’re saying is, what’s most important right now is..."
"Exploration, of course. Getting more resources back to support the camp, as well as intelligence. I suspect we’ve not yet obtained the intelligence to trigger the plot, and that’s why Lind is so wooden."
Among the NPCs who followed, William was the kind who knew nothing when asked, a standard die-hard fan of Lind.
Tione, usually fun to tease, especially entertaining when she used the tactics of the Church of the Undead against Lind—it was just so amusing to watch. But she also wouldn’t issue quests.
The only one who could interact freely and rarely repeated his lines was Lind. Now, even Lind seemed to be stuck here. It seems pushing on with exploration to advance the plot is the urgent priority.
