Chapter 247: Chapter 214 The True Prophecy

The old witch left the Queen’s residence, which belonged to Lord Baya but had become a completely independent territory under the guard of the royal army.

After passing through a narrow alley, the witch’s figure disappeared.

Next, several old women resembling the witch would appear in scattered corners of the territory, drawing the attention of any potential trackers until they completely diverted their gaze.

The proud Queen might never have intended to perform such despicable acts, but this had become the witch’s way of surviving.

Half a day after her figure disappeared in a certain tunnel, she finally emerged outside the city, where a warhorse, prepared in advance, awaited her arrival.

A young boy was responsible for watching the horse.

"Good boy," chuckled the witch, using a bell-like, melodious laugh that could easily be mistaken for the voice of the boy’s sister, "This is what you deserve."

She handed him a coin.

The coin bore the bald head of a man, modeled after the devious and cowardly Lord Baya.

On a good day, such a coin could buy a piece of meat; on a bad day... it could buy a beating, probably including fractures and bleeding.

The boy caught the coin with delight, never considering the consequences it might bring. Just watching the horse for a short while had yielded such a great reward, making the hideous old woman before him seem kind and benevolent.

The witch swiftly mounted the horse and rode away, convinced that if someone were truly tracking and investigating her, they would have discovered that all the false images she had fashioned were fake.

She only faced two possibilities—being pursued or ignored.

Of course, none of that mattered. She was confident she had already escaped, and it was now time to collect an even greater reward.

Mountain Demon Castle, a fortress once belonging to a Duke.

No one cared about the Duke’s former title anymore. Although it had only been a few years, once the Magic Potion drove him mad, his title as the Mountain Goblin Duke had completely replaced his original name, and everyone shunned him as a malevolent spirit.

Lania later appeared; he killed the Mountain Goblin Duke and took his place as the new Lord. He had no official titles since no one had conferred them upon him.

Lord Baya was vain, devious, cowardly, and treacherous, exploiting everyone in his territory. Now, he fancied himself unwisely, desiring to marry the Queen.

Upon actually meeting the Queen, the witch had immediately discerned the vast difference between them; a fearless and noble Queen would surely never fancy an Oathbreaker like Baya.

However, none of that mattered. She was merely in it for greater gains.

After waiting outside the castle for a while, the witch was permitted to enter Mountain Demon Castle. Although it was not her first time entering the Lord’s hall, she could not help but marvel at its opulence.

Portraits of Baya himself were hung all around, from various angles.

Next were his statues—busts, full-body statues, and stone sculptures of his head.

Additionally, there were various specimens of vicious beasts, preserved by some Magic Potion that maintained their fierceness in life without letting them decompose.

The place was like a museum, with all sorts of swords and treasures piled up in the corners like trash, while the covetable Gold Coins of Baya formed a small mountain outside.

On the east side of the hall was an exhibition room, shimmering with white and green lights—the glow of Blessed Weapons, mesmerizing, yet Baya treated them merely as exhibits.

To the right was a library, its door firmly closed, the lock rusty.

As potentially the most valuable part of Mountain Demon Castle, Baya probably hadn’t entered that room even once since becoming its master. He might have opened the door to take a peek, then declared it permanently sealed as an uninteresting room.

The witch kept her head down until she caught a whiff of a peculiar spice that refreshed the spirit.

"Witch, tell me you bring good news," Lord Baya said, sitting at the table with a smile.

The witch nodded, "Yes, just as you said, Her Majesty the Queen asked me to divine the future, to listen to the future concerning her."

"What does she want to know? Exactly!"

"Whether the Kingdom can recover and if she can return to her former place."

"What did you hear?" Baya asked nervously.

His sudden display of genuine emotion made him look like a clown, especially when compared to the Queen’s consistent composure, which made him appear ridiculous.

Lord Baya was just mimicking a Lord, fearful of many things, epitomizing the image of a small thief who had stolen everything from a noble.

He was fearful, wanting to keep everything, wanting more, yet his fear left him frozen in place.

Thus, all he could ultimately enjoy were the glory and wealth, the awe of the people, and the insistence that his title should be addressed as "Lord Baya," not missing a single word.

A true Grand Lord never emphasizes his own title; his name is everything.

"Some jumbled information," Muttering Crone told Baya everything she had heard.

It was hard to find anything valuable in that messy information.

"Then what?" Lord Baya pressed, "Did you hear a conversation about the future?"

Muttering Crone said, "I always wished it was you who died, Lania."

"Someone wants to kill her? No, it sounds more like old friends chatting, without any hint of murderous intent."

"My tone wasn’t like this now," Muttering Crone explained, "I spoke with a voice full of anger and resentment. Luckily, you had already told me that someone close to Her Majesty the Queen could discern the truth of words."

"Hahaha, of course!" Lord Baya laughed proudly, "This is my territory, nothing can escape my eyes!"

Of course, he had planted many of his own spies close to Lania, and after a long period of contact and study, Lord Baya found that even the maid who could discern truth had her limitations.

One can say true things, but a portion of the truth is also the truth.

Withholding certain information can make one thing sound completely like another.

"So, there’s a next part, right? Muttering Crone!"

"Yes," Muttering Crone nodded. She said, "That’s why I rushed back as quickly as I could, just to convey such crucial information to you, just for..."

"Fine! I said you could have a nice little trinket, I have many items in my collection, go and take two of those... what, Blessed Weapons? Someone will tell you which ones you can take."

"Praise your kindness and generosity!" Muttering Crone was ecstatic, her initial reward had only been one item.

"What else did you hear?" Lord Baya inquired.

"I always wished it was you who died, Lania." Muttering Crone repeated some of what she had heard to ensure the smoothness of the conversation: "But now you must fight for me."

She explained, "The first phrase was from that man, the second from Her Majesty the Queen."

"Bang!" Lord Baya slapped his hand on the table, "So she has found a way to rid herself of me, relying on some bastard I know nothing about?"

He was very fearful because the means through which he acquired the Mountain Demon Castle violated the codes of the Knights and Nobles, and the seemingly defenseless Queen Lania surely pretended not to know this. But once she rebuilt her regime, he would definitely be the target to be purged!

"Who is this man?"

"I couldn’t catch his name," Muttering Crone shook her head, "but his voice sounded confident, filled with absolute assurance. Her Majesty the Queen also has great faith in him."

Moreover, he seems more like a Lord than you, vibrant and charming, merely listening to him spoke made it seem akin to witnessing victory.

"I don’t want to hear this!" Lord Baya beat on the table, "I want to know who this is, no! I want this person to not appear!"

Muttering Crone moved her shriveled lips, she wanted to say she was just an old woman who could occasionally hear some voices, not someone who could change the future.

But thinking of the reward not yet in hand, she nodded: "I will!"

"Then find me the future I need to hear first, until then you cannot leave," Lord Baya said. "And those rewards, I shall keep them safe for you, just bring out what I need, I can give you three, no! Four!"

He was like a gambler, his expression fierce.

Although she no longer trusted him in her heart, Muttering Crone still did not dare refuse.

Compared to the dignified and nobility-abiding Queen Her Majesty, Lord Baya was a pure scoundrel, able to shamelessly overturn every oath he had made, just like now.

"As you wish, but if you want to hear more," Muttering Crone said, "I need ears, children’s ears!"

"How many?"

"The more, the better!"
