Chapter 206: His Only Family

Chapter 206: His Only Family

Evelyn sat in the car, cold and blank, as Elias stepped out. Her hand that had held onto Elias was in mid-air, trembling just like her heart, which had just taken a major blow. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions, thoughts racing faster than she could process. She felt a crushing weight of helplessness and betrayal, but also a deep void formed in her heart.

Elias walked toward the other side, every step feeling heavy and painful. This would probably be the last time he would ever see her, which hurt even more. At least, he should have spoken a little more and expressed his gratitude more sincerely so she would hate him less. At least, he should have hugged her one last time. The thought of leaving her behind, of never seeing her again, was almost unbearable.

"What are you doing?" Zevian grumbled at his stupid brother-in-law. When Elias didn’t listen and continued walking toward them, he shouted, "Get back into the car, Elias!"

Elias crossed the distance in a few strides. Taking out his hand, he offered one last handshake. "Take care of her. Make sure she is not hurt by anyone again."

Zevian looked at his hand and then back at Elias. Even Damien was confused as to why Elias was not letting them at least fight for his freedom. Being with Maverick was as good as being in a well; he could already see Elias’s future, but the little man still chose it?

When Zevian didn’t respond, Elias retracted his hand and sighed. He closed his eyes, forcing himself not to turn away to have one final glance at his sister. Heaving another sigh, he murmured, "Goodbye," before walking to his biological father’s side.

Maverick on the other end smiled in victory. He walked a few steps forward, his arms wide open for his little boy. How long had he yearned for this moment? He had waited for 18 years to meet him, to declare to the world that he was his blood, his son!

"Elias, my boy." Maverick smiled warmly, pulling Elias in a tight hug. "I knew you would choose me," he grinned proudly, breaking the hug.

Wrapping a hand around his shoulder, Maverick continued, his joy barely contained. "Don’t worry, now daddy is earning more. I will provide you a better life than your mother and that useless Brown had offered you," he continued, making futile promises. But he failed to notice the sadness on his son’s face.

"Let’s get out of here quickly," Elias muttered, shrugging away from his grip. He was disgusted to have ever been born to such parents, the fact that he might have to live the rest of his life with this man made him nauseous. But it was his fate and no one could alter it.

Evelyn stared out of the car, her vision blurring with unshed tears. Elias kept moving further away from her, to the point that she couldn’t see him after some distance. She felt Zevian turn and look at her, wondering if she was going to just sit there and be sad.

That’s when she realized her mistake. No, she couldn’t give up on Elias! She couldn’t punish him for his parents’ mistakes.

She quickly got out of the car, running toward Elias. Damien and Zevian tried to stop her as she went ahead of them, but Evelyn brushed them off, running closer to her brother.

"Eli, wait!" Evelyn screamed, standing right in the middle of the two groups.

Elias stopped and turned around at her cry. Maverick, who had opened the car door for his son, frowned. He gritted his teeth and closed the door in frustration.

His entire team raised their guns again, all of them pointing at Evelyn. Damien’s men followed suit while the three men tried to run closer toward them.

"Drop your guns!" Elias growled at the morons. When they didn’t listen, he glared at his bastard father and demanded, "Ask them to drop their guns right now!" How dare they point at his sister?

Maverick scowled but followed his order. It was the first time his son was asking something from him, and it was related to Evelyn? He couldn’t help but sneer at the woman standing a few meters away from them.

But Damien’s men didn’t drop their guns. They even moved closer, ready to guard Evelyn who should have stayed back in the car, for god’s sake!

"Stop right there! This is between us siblings!" Evelyn scolded them in frustration. She then looked at her husband, her eyes fierce but pleading to let her handle it.

With a grunt, Zevian reluctantly stepped back while Damien and Ronan cursed under their breaths. They stayed behind, but just a few feet away from Evelyn, their guns loaded and ready.

Evelyn turned to face Elias again. She searched for his eyes, ones that could never hide his true feelings in front of her, unlike his stubborn face which was good at masking emotions. But the dim streetlights made it difficult, causing her heart to race a little.

With much courage, she slowly started, "Did it ever matter to you that I was not the real daughter of the Wrights? Did it ever matter who I really was or who my real parents were?"

Elias felt a lump form in his throat at her question. He stared at Evelyn, her fragile body standing straight even with all the danger around her. She could be shot anytime by Maverick, yet she was here trying to change his mind.

"Answer me, Eli!" Evelyn pressed on, her lips quivering lightly.

"No," Elias blurted out.

"Then how the heck did you think it would matter to me?" Evelyn questioned him further, tears forming in the corners of her eyes. With a trembling voice, she continued, "How did you even conclude that I would still hate you? Even after realizing the dangerous steps you took for me."

Maverick frowned at her words. Dangerous steps. Slowly, realization hit him hard, and he looked at his son. Was he their whistleblower? Did he help them find Gracia?

"Am I that cruel in your eyes?" Evelyn threw her last question, one that not just stung her heart but pierced right through Elias’.

Elias’ mind raced with memories of his childhood, of every moment Evelyn had been there for him. He recalled her unwavering support, her fierce protectiveness, and her unconditional love. The realization of how much he had hurt her with his decision crushed him. Tears streamed down his face as he struggled to find the words.

"No, sis. I thought it would only hurt you more if I stayed with you," Elias confessed slowly, loosening the walls he had tried to build in front of her. Tears danced in the corner of his eyes as he struggled to find the words. "Seeing me every day might remind you of my parents’ sins, and I don’t want you to be hurt anymore."

His words ached Evelyn more. Even until the end, he was trying to protect her, wishing to see her happy by sacrificing his life to a bunch of clowns. Her heart swelled with a mix of pride and sorrow, knowing that he was willing to endure so much for her sake. How could she not fight after seeing this? How could she let him go?

"I will be hurt if you are not with me, Eli," she murmured, her voice choked with emotions. "If you stupidly run away like this, run away from me, I would never be able to live happily."

Silence fell thick after her confession. Many of the cold, ruthless thugs trained to take lives were moved by her words. The raw emotion in her voice, the desperation in her plea, touched even the hardest of hearts.

Even Maverick was at a loss. Sophia had kept mentioning how Evelyn might turn Elias against them, and he thought her to be a cunning fox, trying to deceive his son in a fake relationship. But what he was seeing right now was nothing but genuine love and concern.

With a shaky breath, Evelyn dared to take a few steps even closer and murmured, "I need you in my life, Eli. I need you just as much as I need my mom, Ian, Avy, and everyone close." Tears trickled down her cheeks, unable to hold back anymore. Clutching her heart, she pleaded, "Please don’t go, idiot. Please don’t leave me."

Elias felt his tears break down too, flowing freely on his cheeks. How could he still keep up his walls if she acted like this? He was still unable to move, knowing Maverick wouldn’t tolerate it. Evelyn’s life was still at risk, and his chest tightened in pain, unable to run and cry in his sister’s arms.

"I will take good care of him," Evelyn addressed Maverick. "He is my little brother, and he will always be." Clasping her hands, she begged, "Please don’t take him away."

Maverick ran a hand through his silky blonde hair and groaned out loud. Though he couldn’t trust Evelyn, who was Sophia’s enemy, he still couldn’t ignore the fact that she had been taking care of his son all these years. Evelyn had been there for him, filling the spots that he and Sophia should have fulfilled.

And considering how Evelyn wasn’t worried about her own life, about the fact that she might get shot right in the head just for Elias, he didn’t need any more fake promises. And the fact that she had let go of her ego and was requesting him, one who once had been the closest ally of Sophia, he didn’t need to think about it much.

"Fine," Maverick muttered, his head lowering to hide back his tears.

Elias turned to him, his expression puzzled, and unlike the first time earlier, Maverick didn’t see any disgust in them. Heaving a sigh, he pushed him forward. "Go. Live a happy life."

Elias smiled at him. "Thank you," he murmured, before turning around to run to his sister.

Evelyn ran from the other end, and the duo hugged each other tightly. She embraced Elias tightly, her sobs filling the midnight air. Her heart swelled in relief, the weight of fear and uncertainty lifting as she held her brother close.

Elias felt a little nostalgic. It reminded him of the times Evelyn would wait for him to return from school. His sulky mood would brighten up seeing her waiting in the hall.

"Sis!" The six-year-old would run toward his sister, and Evelyn would squat down to hug him tightly.

The memory brought a smile to his face as he held onto Evelyn, feeling a sense of relief and joy that he hadn’t felt in a long time. The warmth of her embrace, the familiarity of her touch, brought him back to the safety and comfort of their childhood.

Maverick watched the scene with teary eyes. Unable to hold his emotions, he got into the car. His men followed suit, and they drove away quickly.

Zevian heaved a soft sigh as they retraced their steps. Damien and his team sighed too, letting their guards down.

Ronan had no interest in saving Elias from Maverick’s hand, considering how he had a part to play in Annabelle’s death. But now, he resented him a little less. These two weren’t real siblings at all; no blood connected them, but their bond was thicker than that. Jealousy hit him hard, and he hated not having someone like them in his life.

Evelyn broke the hug and smiled at her brother. Quickly wiping away her tears, she held onto his hand and murmured, "Let’s go home."

Elias nodded with a smile. Wherever she would be, it would be his new home. After all, she was his only family. And she will forever be the only one.
