Chapter 200: Sophia Has Gone Mad
Sophia’s mind went numb, her body turning cold in shock. Her heart pounded in her chest, her breaths coming in short, panicked gasps. She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead, her hands trembling uncontrollably. Her vision blurred, and she felt like the ground was slipping away beneath her feet.
Getting up, she rushed over to the bathroom and tried to throw up everything. Evelyn turned around, looking at her nails, waiting for Sophia to finish whatever futile attempts she had to save her life. Once done, almost both physically and mentally drained, Sophia wiped her mouth and walked out. She glared at Evelyn and shouted, "How... How can you do it?"
Evelyn smiled and replied, "Just like how you did when I was still young, step-mother. Wait, don’t tell me you already forgot about it?" she asked, her expression turning smug.
Sophia gritted her teeth, recalling how she used to spoil Evelyn’s favorite dishes so she would get sick and end up never touching them. It seemed like they were giving back for each and every sin she committed. Her mind was still feeling dizzy, making it hard to think clearly.
As she clutched her head and slumped on the bed, Evelyn added, "And it was a waste of time whatever you did now. Since we gave it in water, the poison must have already been absorbed."
Sophia looked up in horror. Evelyn mocked her, "Oh, come on! Don’t tell me just a single prank has shut down all your criminal brain cells. How could you not guess it?"
Sophia’s reaction was one of sheer panic. Her eyes widened, her breathing became erratic, and she felt her heart racing uncontrollably. Evelyn looked at her watch and murmured, "If you go to the hospital, there’s a slight chance of saving you."
Sophia didn’t wait for her to continue and barged out of the room. With a smile, Evelyn followed her, knowing that the actual show was about to begin.
William, who was talking with Ronan in the hall, frowned seeing Sophia running down the stairs. Gracia and Avery exchanged glances and couldn’t help but smile at Evelyn following closely behind.
"What’s wrong, Sophie?" William asked, getting up from his seat. When Sophia ignored him, running toward the door, he quickly grabbed her hand and stopped her.
"I... I am going to die!" Sophia babbled, clutching her chest. "I... I need to save myself." Shrugging off his grip, she ran toward the door, but William grabbed her hand and stopped her. She was embarrassing him in front of the guests!
"What are saying?" he asked, his expression grim.
"They... they poisoned my drink, William," Sophia accused loudly, pointing her trembling finger at Ronan.
"What?" William frowned, looking at Ronan and then back at his wife.
"Yes... He... he is trying to kill me from yesterday, William," Sophia murmured, her voice trembling with fear. The memories of her hanging on that cliff replayed, causing tears to trickle down her cheeks.
"What rubbish are you speaking, Sophia?" William grumbled out loud. It felt as though she was drunk or high on drugs. Her expression and words both made him suspect her highly of it.
"Leave me!" Sophia grumbled, trying to free herself. "I need... I need to go to the hospital." But when William didn’t let go, she burst at him, "Leave me, you useless piece of shit! I need to save my life!"
William’s eyes widened in shock. Sophia had never raised her voice against him, let alone speak so foully. His expression turned dark, anger and embarrassment crossing his eyes. Evelyn and Avery pressed their laughter, while Ronan smirked, finally successful in revealing her true face.
Sophia turned around and rushed to the door, but midway, she felt her head dizzy and fell unconscious, collapsing on the floor.
"Sophia!" William shrieked and immediately rushed to her side. Lifting her up, he patted her cheeks and tried to wake her, "Sophia!"
"I will call the doctor!" Evelyn declared, and at William’s nod, she took out her phone, dialing their family doctor.
Gracia watched as William took Sophia to her room with the staff’s help, a smile forming on her lips. Avery clung to her arm and murmured, "She won’t be expecting this surprise." Gracia nodded in agreement.
Sophia woke up, confused and still weak. She blinked her eyes, trying to focus on her surroundings. Was she in hell already? But as her vision cleared, she realized she was still in her room. A sigh escaped her lips, and then she noticed the people around her.
"How are you feeling, Mrs. Wright?" Their family doctor greeted her, and even William, sitting beside her, moved closer, holding onto her hand.
"Fi... fine..." Sophia replied, her eyes fixed on Ronan and Evelyn standing in front of the bed.
"Tell me what all happened since yesterday, Mrs. Wright," the doctor questioned again, making her turn to him. When their gazes met, he added, "No need to be scared. Tell us everything, please."
Sophia frowned in confusion. What was happening here? Did they reveal everything? It didn’t feel like that, considering how William was sitting right beside her. She then looked at Evelyn’s expression, as if she had lost. That was one familiar expression. Did William realize what she did? Did he scold her?
"Tell us, Sophie," William’s voice brought her out of her thoughts. When she looked at him, he firmly pressed her hand and requested, "Don’t hide anything from me. I promise not to doubt you."
Sophia realized he might be right. So, he would still take her side! It felt like finding an oasis after endless torture in the desert. Sitting straight, she nodded and decided to reveal everything.
"He... he hung me by a cliff last night," Sophia said aloud, pointing her finger at Ronan. Turning to Evelyn, she continued, "I don’t know what she told him. They all tried to kill me last night, William."
When William’s expression changed to one of disbelief, she continued, "I swear I am not lying! You can check my car’s dash cam. Everything is recorded in there. I am sure of it!"
Evelyn held back her scoff. Did she really think they would leave behind clues?
"Trust me. Please!" Sophia continued, tugging at William’s hand.
William exchanged a glance with the doctor and nodded in response. "Alright. I will take care of it," he murmured, confusing Sophia. Why wasn’t he angry? Why wasn’t he bashing them?
William got up from the bed and helped her lay back down. "You need to get some rest. I will see you later," he murmured, tucking her into the blanket as if she were sick. No, he was acting as if she had gone mad.
"Let’s talk outside," the doctor said. William sighed and followed him out. Evelyn and Ronan smiled at Sophia before walking out. Evelyn acted like she was closing the door but kept it slightly ajar, making sure Sophia heard everything.
"I was right, Mr. Wright. Seeing her hallucinations, dizziness, and other symptoms, she seems to have been adversely affected by Gracia’s return," the doctor spoke, his voice strangely loud and very clear. With a sigh, he continued, "She needs a psychiatrist’s help. If you ignore now or delay it, I don’t think anyone would be able to help her recover completely."
"But doctor..."
"He is right. I have seen many such cases, Mr. Wright," Ronan cut William off, his words making Sophia sit up in bed. What rubbish were they speaking?
"Get her treated before she goes completely mad," Evelyn added in her own stance. "I don’t want Mom to be blamed later for her condition," she added, sounding quite serious.
Mad? What the heck! Sophia threw away the blanket, getting up from the bed, but William’s next words made her pause in shock.
"Alright. Please suggest a good doctor." He replied with a resigned sigh.
"Okay." The doctor nodded and added, "I will also look for a good mental hospital. There are some private institutions who will treat her discreetly."
Sophia sat back on the bed, her face blank in shock. Were they sending her away to mental cells? Just like the one she had kept Gracia in all these years?
