Chapter 158: A Perfect Shield
Evelyn’s breath hitched, her heart racing wildly. She closed her eyes, her body heated up at his words, the raw desire and intensity in his tone sending shivers down her spine. She could feel the pulse of her heart quicken, but she fought it, struggling to maintain some semblance of control.
A smirk curled Zevian’s lips as he took in her reaction, enjoying every bit of it. The way her breath hitched, the way her body responded to him, it was enough to turn him on. His heart raced with a hunger that matched hers, but he could see the exhaustion in her eyes that held him back.
The mental drain that Evelyn had gone through today, from the past few days, she needed rest and deep sleep to get out of it.
Reaching over, Zevian gently kissed her forehead, his lips lingering for a moment longer. "Let’s sleep for tonight," he murmured, his voice soft but firm. "We still have many more ahead."
Evelyn faintly blushed at his words, her heart warming at his consideration. Zevian pulled her closer, and she rested her head on his chest, sighing deeply. And there, in the warmth of his embrace, she felt a fleeting sense of peace.
But it didn’t last long, as her mind quickly replayed everything that had happened in the last few days. Every day seemed like a scandal. A new twist came knocking on their lives, and just when they thought they could finally break through it, Elias gave her a final blow.
Her heart ached as she recalled his behavior, the rudeness in his tone, the arrogance on his face.
"I can’t believe Eli’s words," Evelyn whispered, her voice choking with emotion. "His sudden change of heart, the way he spoke to me... it doesn’t make sense."
Zevian’s fingers gently brushed through her hair as he ran his hand down her back, caressing it gently to comfort her.
"Even if he’s faking it, he can’t bring you down for his selfish needs," he said softly, his voice filled with frustration. He barely restrained himself from punching that guy, quite sure it would be used up to dig more dirt on Evelyn.
Evelyn nodded with a sigh, though her chest still felt heavy. The hurt was deep, the sting of betrayal fresh and raw, throbbing her mind just thoughts of him.
"It feels like he just... turned on me," Evelyn continued, her voice trembling. "He made it seem like everything was my fault like I’m the one causing all this trouble. Unlike all these years." Her heart clenched painfully at the memory of Elias’s accusations.
Zevian kissed her forehead, his expression softening with understanding. "You don’t deserve that, Eva. You’ve done nothing but love him all these years." His voice was soothing, but the anger in his eyes betrayed the depth of his feelings.
"You could have easily picked on him for what his mother did to you. But you didn’t... And he should at least keep that in mind."
"I just... I don’t understand him anymore," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking slightly as tears formed in the corner of her eyes. She felt herself slipping further into the abyss of confusion and hurt.
Zevian’s hand tightened around hers as he pulled her even closer, wrapping her in his embrace. "We’ll figure it out, I promise." He whispered the words, but there was certainty in his voice. He would make sure of it of this mess. No matter what it took!
They lay in silence for a few moments, just listening to the sound of each other’s breathing, the only comfort they could find in the chaos surrounding them.
Zevian broke the silence after a while, his voice light and teasing as he shifted the mood. "What do you say we get away from all this for a while? Take a day just for us?"
Evelyn smiled faintly, the thought of escaping the weight of everything for a moment bringing her some much-needed solace. "That sounds perfect," she replied softly, feeling her body relax against him. "Just you and me... no drama. No scheming. No one else."
Zevian smiled as he kissed the top of her head, his voice a low murmur. "And no third wheel too!"
Evelyn chuckled and nodded in response. And with that, they slowly drifted off to sleep, tangled in each other’s arms, finding peace in the quiet of the night.

Back at Wright Mansion
Elias paced back and forth in the dark, the hallway around him eerily quiet. His footsteps echoed, each one heavy with the weight of his major mistake. His mind raced, turning over the conversation with Evelyn again and again, trying to make sense of it. But the more he thought about it, the less he understood.
How could Annabelle be still alive? His mother made sure she was dead and gone for good.
His heart pounded in his chest as fear gripped him. He couldn’t shake the image of Annabelle, her cry for help echoed in his mind. And then, Evelyn’s earlier frame played after it, her knowing smile as she walked away. It felt like she was in control of everything like she knew something she shouldn’t. And that thought terrified him.
Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps reached his ears, and Elias turned quickly, his gaze locking on the figure rushing towards him. Sophia hurried over, her expression tight with concern. Without a word, she threw her bag aside and pulled him into a tight embrace.
"What happened, dear?" Sophia asked, her voice filled with worry. "You called me to rush back, and said it was very urgent."
Elias had called her with such a panicked voice that she took the earliest flight back here, leaving William under her men’s watch.
Elias shook his head, still unsure of how to explain the turmoil swirling inside him. His mother had been his rock in this mess, but now he couldn’t help but doubt everything she had ever told him. The guilt, the fear—it was overwhelming.
"Let’s talk upstairs," Elias said and led her upstairs, his mind racing, unsure of what to say. Once they were inside his room, he quickly retrieved the voice recorder he had secretly placed under the table during his conversation with Evelyn earlier as per her orders.
Sophia settled on the couch, her eyes watching him cautiously as he pressed play. The sound of Evelyn’s calm, confident voice filled the room, and Sophia listened intently, her brows furrowing as Evelyn’s every threat played out.
When the recording finished, Elias turned to his mother, his face pale with worry. "Sis is just bluffing, right?" he asked, his voice laced with doubt. His earlier bravado, the arrogance that had so confidently colored his interactions with Evelyn, was gone now. It was replaced by vulnerability, by the fear of losing everything.
Sophia sat still for a few suffocating seconds, replaying the recording in her mind. She had known Evelyn for more than two decades, and she could always tell when the little woman was lying or hiding something. Evelyn was no amateur when it came to deception just like her, but there was something in her tone—something too genuine about her threat regarding Annabelle’s death.
Sophia let out a long sigh, shaking her head. "As much as I know her, she wouldn’t lie about someone so important," she said, her voice low and filled with an eerie certainty.
The fact that Annabelle was the mafia ruler’s lost daughter frightened her to the core. She should have run a clear background check before bringing Laila here. She thought, cursing Maverick in her head who was now roaming around Arabia, trying to escape Damien’s spies.
Elias’s heart skipped a beat, his fear escalating at her words. "What do we do now?" he asked, his voice almost a whisper.
Sophia’s gaze locked onto his, her expression hardening in resolve. "We continue with my plan, Eli. No one will be able to catch you if we keep using Evelyn. She’ll be our perfect shield."
Elias hesitated, his guilt gnawing at him. "But... what if she finds out? What if she sees through us?"
Sophia sighed and replied, her voice becoming firm. "She loves you dearly and will understand your reasons, Eli. You are siblings. Going through pain for each other isn’t a big thing. Evelyn will understand it."
She cupped his face with both hands, her eyes cold as ice. "Trust your mom for once, will you? I might have been evil in bringing Annabelle to bring down Evelyn, but it’s all for you, Elias. I can go to any lengths to keep you safe. And trust me, you will be safe as long as you are a Wright."
Her words sank deep into his mind, and Elias felt the weight of them settle in his chest. He wasn’t sure anymore, the fear overwhelming his mind. He was caught in her web, unable to escape, too deep into the family’s secrets to ever leave.
"Do you get it?" Sophia asked, her eyes gleaming with coldness.
Elias lowered his gaze, his mind reeling. The memory of Annabelle’s death lingered in the back of his mind, making him goosebumps in terror. He slowly nodded, heaving a heavy sigh.
Sophia smiled, pulling him into a hug again. A low triumph smirk played across her face. As long he was under her control, as William was wrapped around her finger, Evelyn couldn’t do anything.
But Sophia didn’t realize there was someone who would shake William... Someone who would take Evelyn’s side and Damien had already found her.
