Chapter 150: Best Friend Duties

Chapter 150: Best Friend Duties

Lucius cursed under his breath, bringing his hand to cover his eyes, trying to stop himself from punching the guy in front of them. Zevian, barely able to control his anger, clenched his fists, ready to strike Ronan for his idiotic knight show. That maid was their only key out of this mess! How could he get rid of her?!

Ronan could feel the anger simmering from the group and glared at his own stupid right hand. "Make it clear, Carson!" he growled, his voice thick with frustration.

"Oh, I’m sorry." Carson quickly realized his mistake. In his excitement and fear of being kicked in the balls by the intimidating man in front of him, he had revealed only half of the truth. "We fabricated her death. She’s under our custody and will spill the truth sooner now." Looking at Evelyn, he added, "Grace will be free soon."

"Thank goodness!" Avery sighed aloud. So Ronan hadn’t been a total jerk! she thought, glancing at Ronan. He had still managed to support Evelyn, making up for his cruel mistakes in the past few days.

"And who is the one that’s dead?" Evelyn couldn’t help but ask. They had seen the body being taken away on the news, and she was worried this mafia gang might have hurt another innocent person. Many had already died in this mess, with her indirectly responsible for it, and she didn’t want another name added to the list.

"Someone who was willing to do it for a reward," came a familiar voice from the entrance. They all looked up to see Damien as the guards quickly bowed, clearing a path for their boss.

"Damien!!" Avery squealed, almost as if excited to see him again. She quickly masked her happiness with a serious look, reasoning that it must be because she knew he would handle this mess better. It wasn’t like she was missing him or anything. Or did she?

"Dom!" Lucius was equally excited to see his brother-in-law. As Damien stepped inside, passing by guests still waiting at the door, Lucius pulled him into a hug. Handling their empire was easy work, but his promise to protect Zevian and his wife had become a headache. Only Damien could manage it well!

Damien smiled, and after pulling back, he went to hug his friend. Zevian wrapped his arms around Damien, a sigh escaping his lips, glad to have him back. He’d wanted to call and ask him to come for a while until Evelyn was proved innocent, sure they could clear this mess quicker together. But Damien didn’t needed it; best friend’s duty calls were important than his work, forcing him to come over without needing a request.

"You keep ending up in bigger messes and surprising me, Evelyn." Damien joked, walking over to Evelyn and hugging her.

"I’ll take that as a compliment," Evelyn replied, causing Damien to chuckle as he broke the hug.

Avery waited for her turn but only got a pat on the head. Damien simply ruffled her hair, messing with her as he usually did. A pout formed on her lips, her hands—almost ready to open for a hug—clenching into fists. ’What’s wrong with you?!’ she cursed herself internally, feeling foolish and worse than that.

"Why did you return so quickly?" Avery asked, trying to sound annoyed. It had only been a week since he’d moved back with Natalie to Aracemia. Lucius had mentioned he was deeply involved in their mafia dealings, rarely even making a call, so it was obvious he had rushed here for Evelyn. But she still asked, cursing herself for acting foolish again.

Damien turned around and replied with a smirk, "When Montedoro’s mafia boss personally calls and requests my help, I couldn’t ignore it."

His words confused everyone, but Zevian caught on quickly. He glanced at Ronan, who still had his eyes fixed on Evelyn. Ronan didn’t have much power to control things here, so he must have gone to someone as influential as him here, like in Montedoro’s underworld.

"I was already on my way when you texted me," Damien replied to Ronan, specifically addressing his right hand, who looked confused about how he’d arrived so quickly. They had called him earlier that afternoon, after finishing Laila’s funeral, asking for help in fabricating the maid’s death, and Damien had agreed, liking the plan.

"So, you were part of it?" Lucius asked, puzzled.

Damien nodded, gesturing for Ronan to finally come inside, and continued, "I was planning something similar, but Ronan’s idea was better. We quickly went through it and decided to inform you all later."

As they all walked to the hall and sat across from each other, Damien glanced at Evelyn and added, "And don’t worry. Whoever died in place of that maid wasn’t innocent; she had her hands covered in lots of blood and gotten a lifetime sentence. When we offered this job, she readily agreed in return for her kids and husband being cared for."

Evelyn nodded in relief, glad no innocents were picked up for it. Fabricating things was no tough task for someone like Damien. It might add even more fuel against her, but having the maid in Damien’s custody would bring out the truth faster than any police officer.

Rita, who had just finished freshening up, entered the hall, her eyes widening as soon as she saw Damien. "Boss!" she squealed, tossing aside the splint and running toward him.

"Careful, Rita," Damien warned, standing up. A soft laugh escaped him when Rita pounced on him, hugging him tightly.

Evelyn smiled at her bodyguard’s usual infectious energy. Having heard how close she’d been with Damien and his clan, it must have been nice for her to see him again after years.

"You’ve gotten leaner," Damien complained like an older brother. Glancing at Ronan and Carson, he added, "Doesn’t Montedoro have any nutritious food?"

"I’ve been a little busy with job hunting, hehe," Rita replied, grinning at her boss. "But when you called me back with a task, I was so happy I ate three bowls of rice every meal. You can ask Ma’am!" She turned to Evelyn, who nodded with a smile.

"That’s good to hear." Damien replied with a small smile. Ruffling her hair, he helped her sit beside him before shifting to serious matters. "Got anything to say?" he asked Ronan, who had been entirely silent.

Ronan sighed softly before looking up at Evelyn. "I’m sorry, Grace. I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I had no other choice. My family always comes first."

Evelyn nodded in response, accepting his apology. She understood his reasons, and seeing him trying to help her had already softened whatever negative feelings she had about him.

"But I won’t leave this place until you’re proven innocent!" Ronan declared, making Zevian sneer. Carson sighed at his boss’s stubbornness, bracing himself for trouble. The deeper they got entangled in this mess, the angrier Benjamin would become, ready with his sword in Montedoro.

"We might have never met, but she was still my sister," Ronan murmured, his voice low and tinged with sadness. "And I’ll make sure whoever killed her suffers the same fate!" He added, his face darkening.

"Yes. They’ll pay for their sins." Evelyn replied, her voice cold but resolute. But could she keep her word? Would she really be able to kill her own kin? Her dear brother, now hiding somewhere to wash away his sin?
