Chapter 143: Murderer

Ronan’s brows shot up in surprise before his jaw tightened in frustration. Turning to Evelyn, he grumbled, "What is he doing here?"

"Well, I heard from my wife that you have been missing me so much," Zevian replied instead, worsening Ronan’s mood. "So, I came to see you."

Ronan had been telling Evelyn how peaceful it was not having her husband swarming around like a flea, and she must have told him! But it was Rita who had conveyed his comments to her boss, worried Ronan might be a threat in the future. She had sworn loyalty to Zevian and made sure to report even the tiniest details.

Evelyn pressed her lips together to hold back her laughter. Ronan’s expression had funnily changed, fuming at her husband’s comment. But unlike her, Rita couldn’t and snorted out loud. The AWE staff, who had encountered Ronan at the entrance and tried to stop him, also muffled their laughs, finding the battle between the two men amusing.

Evelyn decided to save the poor man. She tried to free herself from Zevian’s grip to talk with Ronan, but it only tightened, causing her to look up at him in surprise. Zevian looked at her, his dark gaze conveying that he wouldn’t let her go. Evelyn gave up. Clearing her throat, she asked with a small smile, "What brings you here this early, Ronan?"

"I heard you gave them a leave. Grandpa asked me to get you for breakfast," Ronan replied to her. Glancing at Zevian, he added, "He wants you to spend the day with him."

"Tch," Zevian clicked his tongue even before Evelyn could reply. Shaking his head apologetically, he continued, "But we already made plans for today."

Evelyn looked at her husband and blinked in surprise. When did they ever make plans? In fact, when did he even give her the time to chat with him last night?

"But fret not, we will visit him for dinner," Zevian continued with a smile, leaving no room for negotiation. Looking at Evelyn, he asked, "Right, Eva?"

Evelyn slightly glared at him before nodding in response. He was possessive as hell, and though it was cute to watch, they couldn’t offend that old man. Turning to Ronan, she smiled, "We will join you guys for dinner."

Ronan gritted his teeth, his fists clenched tightly. He had plans to take Evelyn out alone to talk more about Annabelle. The last couple of days had been quite busy for her, and he didn’t want to burden her. Today seemed like the perfect opportunity as he was eager to know more about his step-sister, but it was beautifully ruined by this bastard husband!

"Alright," he agreed with a sigh. Glaring at Zevian one last time, he stormed out of the house.

"Good job, Boss!" Rita couldn’t stop herself from giving Zevian a thumbs up. She grinned happily, and Zevian nodded back at her with a small smile.

"Do you guys know each other already?" Evelyn asked in confusion. She looked between them, wondering if they had met before; it seemed like it wasn’t their first meeting. If so, then why hadn’t Rita ever mentioned it?

"She was working in Qubarc," Zevian replied to his wife. "She had her reasons to retire, and Damien let her go."

Evelyn blinked in surprise. She looked at Rita, who nodded, guilt written all over her face. It seemed like she didn’t want to talk about her past and had never shared it openly. There was a sadness in her expression

Evelyn had never seen in the past 11 days, so she didn’t press on, realizing Rita didn’t want to talk about it.

"I’ll come later and drop you guys at the Igor Mansion," Rita said with a smile, quickly brushing away the topic. When Zevian nodded, the young woman turned around and ushered the AWE staff out of the house.

Once everyone left and they were alone, Zevian finally let go of Evelyn. He grabbed her hand and walked her to the dining table. "Let’s have breakfast first."

Evelyn nodded and followed him with a grin. She sat on the chair while Zevian walked to the kitchen to bring the dishes to the table. Once everything was set, he sat beside her, both digging in with all smiles.

"Oh, it’s delicious!" Evelyn praised, savoring the pancakes. She had missed eating the ones he made for her. Zevian made sure to serve other dishes too and watched her enjoy them with a smile.

"Why did Rita quit?" Evelyn asked after a while, unable to hold her curiosity. She sipped her juice and waited patiently as Zevian had his coffee.

"Damien’s father took her in when she was very young, and she became a solid member of his organization. But she fell in love with a guy from another clan who hid his identity and took information from her," Zevian started, explaining the major details he knew about Rita. "Rita never had a family and started to see one in him. But when she realized he was their enemy, she was ordered to kill him for revealing major secrets. She retired after that incident and settled here."

Evelyn couldn’t help but feel for the poor girl. Rita had always been cheerful, and full of life and energy, so no one could imagine she had such a painful past. Love does make people blind, and the major example was Vincent himself. He had fallen for Annabelle way too quickly and had yet to discover her real identity.

Evelyn frowned at her thoughts. Why was she suddenly remembering Laila so much? She had thought of her thrice already this morning. Maybe talking about her with Ronan had its effects. She shook it off and enjoyed her home-date with Zevian.

Once they finished breakfast, Evelyn decided to take Zevian to the old mansion they had been renovating for the last 11 days. It had always been her dream to work along with him, and the old Igor mansion felt like the perfect place where he could offer suggestions.

"Come!" Evelyn excitedly took Zevian inside the mansion. The staff quickly came to offer their greetings, surprised to see her since they’d been told it was a day off and no designers would be coming that day.

"Morning, Eric!" Evelyn greeted the head butler. Turning to Zevian beside her, she clung to his arm and introduced him with a bright smile. "Meet my husband, Zevian Reign."

Eric observed the handsome man beside Evelyn, understanding why his young madam had been so happy and glowing. She must have missed her home dearly. With a polite smile, he greeted, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Reign. Please make yourself at home and let me know if you need anything."

Eric glanced back at Evelyn, and when she nodded, he left to give the couple some privacy.

"Let’s go to the grand hall first! You’ll love it!" Evelyn declared with a smile and dragged Zevian through the corridor. He was already amused by the ancient architecture with some beautiful old roots. But when they reached the hall, he was mesmerized by the ceiling, which was globular and made entirely of glass and reflected the sharp sun rays.

"They had metal ceilings, but we changed it to glass. It gives fairy tale vibes," Evelyn explained, and Zevian agreed with a smile. They continued to tour the grand mansion, and Zevian loved every aspect of it, its richness and charm touching him just as much as it had touched Evelyn. He understood why she had eagerly offered to renovate this place.

"What should we do next?" Evelyn asked with a smile. They had finished touring the house, and Eric had served them some refreshing tea. Taking a sip, she turned to Zevian, who was scrolling through his phone.

Rita had some beautiful locations to visit, but unfortunately, they were all a long distance away. It would take an entire day of traveling, and they still needed to visit the Igor family. Just then, his assistant sent him a text, which brought a smile to his face.

"We can go sightseeing tomorrow," Zevian replied, turning off his phone. "Let’s visit the elder couple today," he added with a smile.

Evelyn’s eyes widened in surprise. "But don’t you have to leave tonight?" she asked with a pout.

"Well, I can postpone it for a day," Zevian replied nonchalantly, bringing a huge smile to Evelyn’s lips.

She quickly put down her cup and pounced on him, making Zevian laugh out loud. "You are the best!" Being with Kiana had taught her such cute phrases too.

Patting her head, Zevian replied, "I know."

The maids around couldn’t help but smile at their interaction. Some even envied Evelyn for getting such a caring and attractive husband, while many were happy for her. Considering how hardworking and kind she had been, they only wished the best for her.

Later in the evening.

Rita, who had been waiting patiently with the car ready, grinned happily when she saw the couple walking out of the villa. "Boss! Ma’am!" she called out.

"We could have gone by ourselves! You should have rested today, Rita," Evelyn said, smiling.

Rita shook her head, then drove them to the mansion. Zevian had changed into a formal suit, while Evelyn wore a simple knee-length skirt paired with a black blazer that made her look equally as charming as her husband. After almost an hour of driving, they arrived at the mansion.

It was already dark, and the building was lit up with bright lights. Zevian’s eyes marveled at the architecture at the entrance, adorned with beautiful sculptures. It seemed that the elder Igor had a taste for beautiful buildings, and it was clear why he appreciated Grace’s work so much.

"Oh, they’re here!" Margaret’s voice echoed through the hall. She rose from the couch and welcomed the guests, pulling Evelyn into a hug.

Zevian bowed his head to the elder woman, and Margaret smiled back at him. Soon, Benjamin walked down the grand staircase, with Ronan following close behind. Benjamin scowled at Zevian but smiled warmly at Evelyn.

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Igor," Zevian greeted the old man, who nodded curtly in response. Although he remained somewhat skeptical of why Grace had chosen Zevian over his grandson, seeing how happy and radiant she looked with him spoke volumes.

"I’ve only heard good things about you, Mr. Reign," Benjamin began, his tone more like a complaint than a compliment. Turning to Evelyn, he continued, "You’re lucky to have found Grace. Cherish her and give her the life she deserves."

Zevian looked at Evelyn and smiled warmly. That expression alone assured the old man of Zevian’s love for Grace. Turning back to him, Zevian replied, "I will, Mr. Igor."

"Alright! Let’s have dinner first. We can talk later," Margaret suggested with a smile.

Everyone nodded and rose from their seats. Just as they were about to walk to the dining room, three police officers entered with the security guards—and even Rita—trailing behind them.

Benjamin recognized the senior officer among them and stepped forward to greet him. "What brings you here, Matteo?"

Matteo looked past Benjamin, his gaze fixing on Evelyn. Taking out a warrant, he replied in English, "We’re here to arrest Ms. Evelyn."

"What?" Ronan frowned in confusion, and Zevian mirrored his expression. Who would file a complaint against her in a foreign country?

"What nonsense are you talking about?" Benjamin grumbled in Italian, his tone filled with confusion.

Unaffected by their intimidating gazes, Matteo continued, "We received orders and a notice from Vespera City to arrest her for the murder of Ms. Annabelle Wright."
