Chapter 224: A Twin Pregnancy?

"We can go to your Obstetrician and have it checked. Let us do that before you get discharged?" the bodyguard asked Mu Lan.

"Hmmm," Mu Lan nodded.

Ken accompanied Mu Lan to the right wing where the Doctors’ clinics were. The doctor placed a stethoscope on Mu Lan’s bulging tummy.

"I only hear one heartbeat. You are a little over six months pregnant. At this stage, it is impossible to miss a twin pregnancy. We just had your ultrasound and even the ultrasound showed only one baby." the doctor explained patiently. "Your baby is very active and growing bigger. Other than her feet and hands, she is also hitting you with her knees and elbows."

Mu Lan laughed heartily then she felt ashamed. "Yeah, I guess she is just too active. Thank you, Doctor. We will be on our way. Sorry to trouble you."

"Come back after a month." The doctor said with an amused look on her face.

Ken offered the crook of his arm as her support. When they left the clinic, there were still not too many patients in the waiting area. Mu Lan signed with relief. She will not feel jealous because she doesn’t have a husband to accompany her. She could pretend that the bodyguard walking beside her was her husband.

While walking in the corridor, they came across a young couple. The woman’s belly was as big as a watermelon. It was obvious that her due date was just around the corner. The man beside him looked solemn and they did not look like a couple at all but two strangers who happened to walk alongside each other.

The woman looked at Mu Lan with obvious envy in her eyes. Her gaze darted to the tall man beside her who was looking at Mu Lan with gentleness. It was obvious that he loved his wife judging by the way he looked at her.

"I want a divorce after I gave birth to your son. I don’t want to trap myself in this loveless marriage. You can marry that slutty mistress of yours. I want custody of my son until he is old enough to choose between the two of us and you have to pay me alimony." She said loudly not minding that there were a few people around.

The man visibly stiffened and surprise flashed across his face.

The woman was about to pass by Mu Lan. "You are very lucky, Madam. Your husband cares about you and loves you very much." She said softly and without waiting for Mu Lan’s reaction she continued walking to the doctor’s clinic.

Mu Lan was dumbfounded. She looked back at the backs of the couple who were heading to where they came from then she looked at her hand which was holding Ken’s arm. She felt embarrassed and she quickly retracted her hand.

"I am sorry, Ken. I made other people misunderstand." She said timidly.

Ken looked down at his arm felt empty and he was unhappy. That nosey woman!

Mu Lan stepped back and studied Ken. He was not wearing a surgical mask today and it was the first that Mu Lan had a clear look at his facial features.

Erik was wearing a hyper-realistic face mask made from flexible silicone material. It was based on his original facial features with some alterations to make his face look more rugged. He was sporting a long hair that was tied up in a ponytail and he had a beard and a mustache. His cheekbones were more pronounced and his jaw more chiseled. Ken was a rugged and carefree version of Erik.

"It is alright, Madam. I don’t mind at all. My job is not only to protect you but to make it comfortable and easy for you. Please hold unto me to keep your balance, otherwise, I will be the one to hold unto you and it might make you uncomfortable."

Mu Lan nodded and placed her hand back on his forearm as they continued walking back to their ward. Mu Lan was blushing. She did not know why but she felt that she liked holding on to Ken. It made her feel warm and secure.

The corner of Ken’s lips curled up lightly. He was contended and happy.

Nanny Wan was already in the ward when they arrived.

"Missy, I have packed all your things. What do we do with all these flowers and fruit baskets?"

Mu Lan glanced at the flowers and fruit baskets that lined up one side of the wall.

"Let’s bring one fruit basket and that bouquet over there to the Mu Mansion." Mu Lan pointed to a bouquet of bright sunflowers accentuated with lilacs and forget-me-nots. It looked very different from all the other bouquets and it attracted her attention.

Ken followed with his eyes where Mu Lan was pointing and a slight smile appeared on his face. It was the bouquet he asked the florist to customize and deliver yesterday.

"It is a good choice, Missy. This bouquet was thoughtfully prepared." Nanny Wan separated the bouquet and one fruit basket from the rest. "How about the others?"

"Let us bring them to the general ward. Ken, please arrange for these to be brought to the general ward."

Ken did not waste any more time. He came out of the ward and called the guards who were secretly watching him.

"Bring the flowers and the fruit baskets to the general ward and distribute them to the patients there."

Mu Lan wanted to distribute the fruits personally. Ken dissuaded her not to but she was stubborn. Ken can do nothing about it. He was after all only a guard.

When Mu Lan reached the general ward followed by three men carrying flowers and fruits, they were confused.

Mu Lan and the guards walked around and distributed the fruits. The patients on the general ward were very poor. They were under charity and they did not have the means to buy medicines, so it was impossible for them to buy fruits as much as the flowers which cannot be eaten. Mu Lan selected a good location and placed the basket of flowers on top of bare tables. Somehow the gloomy place seemed to brighten with the addition of the flowers. The patients were very happy and thanked the pregnant lady profusely.

"Mister, your wife is very kind. You are very lucky to have such a beautiful wife with a good heart." An elderly patient to whom Ken handed an apple said while smiling. Mu Lan who was standing beside Ken blushed.

Mu Lan coughed lightly and wanted to refute what the elderly said.

"I agree with you Ma’am. Any man would be lucky to be her husband."
