Chapter 218: The Bodyguard

Mu Lan felt a familiar presence but she did not know what it was. She looked around and tried to find where it was. Erik noticed Aryana’s movement and he stepped behind the neurologist to make his presence inconspicuous.

"Are you looking for someone?" Mu Heng asked when he noticed Mu Lan looking around.

"Nothing Grandpa. I just thought that I felt a familiar presence." Mu Lan said while frowning.

Mu Heng and Erik exchanged glances. Worry flashed across Mu Heng’s eyes while Erik was scared that he might trigger Aryana again.

The neurologist cleared his throat. "We will come again later. Please rest well Madam Mu."

Erik was reluctant to leave but he has no choice but to follow the neurologist.

After a few minutes, Mu Heng’s cell phone rang. His assistant answered the phone for him.

"There is someone outside who wanted to talk to you, Old Master Mu."

Mu Heng frowned. Who could it be? He followed the butler outside.

Mu Lan was dozing off when a tall man wearing a mask and tinted eyeglasses pushed a wheelchair inside the ward. He was wearing black jeans and a black jacket.

Mu Lan was still sleeping and so the bodyguard sat on the chair beside her bed and just watched her closely.

Mu Lan’s forehead was drenched in sweat and she started twitching and murmuring under her breath. She was having a nightmare.

The bodyguard panicked. He tentatively touched her shoulder. When it did not wake her up, she shook her shoulder a little bit harder. This time Mu Lan stirred and opened her eyes. She was in a daze.

"I am sorry Madam. It seemed like you are having a nightmare, hence I woke you up." The bodyguard’s voice was very hoarse.

"Thank you for waking me up. Indeed I was having a nightmare, but now, I can’t remember what it was."

"Grandpa!" Mu Lan called out excitedly when she saw her grandpa enter the VIP ward.

"Mu Lan, you are awake. This is Ken. He will be your bodyguard and assistant. He will take care of the heavy lifting that Wan will not be able to do."

"But Grandpa, I don’t need a bodyguard." Mu Lan pouted her lips. She cannot imagine herself walking around and a bodyguard following her wherever she goes.

The bodyguard studied the pregnant woman from under his shades. He thought that she looked cute when she pouted her lips.

"Don’t be stubborn Mu Lan. We don’t want a repeat of what happened during lunch. What if there were no people around and nobody brought you to the hospital? " Mu Heng said in a stern voice.

Mu Lan lowered her head. Her grandpa was right. She could not risk the baby in her stomach.

The bodyguard assisted her as she get off the bed. He offered his hand and Mu Lan hold onto his right hand and sat in the wheelchair. The bodyguard bent, then he fixed the footrest and gently placed her feet on the footrest. He went behind the wheelchair and pushed it out of the ward.

The radiology center was on a different floor so the bodyguard together with the nanny entered the elevator. Mu Heng was already old so he decided to stay in the ward. Mu Chen went back to school.

When they arrived at the ultrasound room, Mu Lan’s OB Gynecologist greeted her warmly. She looked around and noticed that her brother did not come with her. Instead, a talk and handsome bodyguard was accompanying Mu Lan.

"Master Mu Feng did not come with you?"

"He is on a business trip. Mu Chen also has a class."

The doctor nodded and instructed Aryana to go up the bed. A footstool was placed beside the bed to make it easier for her to climb.

The bodyguard held her hand tightly and helped her up to the bed. Mu Lan felt a familiar warmth in those hands but before she could think about it, the warmth was gone. She stole a glance at the man standing beside her and noticed that his hands were stuffed inside the pockets of his jacket.

The doctor cleared her throat. She looked at the bodyguard and signaled for him to go out. The bodyguard handed her a note. A look of surprise flashed in the doctor’s eyes. She nodded as if to signify her understanding.

The doctor lifted Mu Lan’s shirt. The bodyguard’s eyes flickered when he saw the exposed fair baby bump. His hand trembled before he stuffed them inside his pockets.

Aryana’s eyes were focused on the monitor as the doctor moved the device over her stomach. "Look, there is your baby. That’s the head. She is very active. She’s kicking at the place where I put pressure."

The bodyguard was also intently looking at the monitor. It was a 3D ultrasound so the image of the fetus inside was clearly captured.

Mu Lan was smiling broadly. She giggled when she felt the baby kicked. She could even see the spot in her stomach bulging because of the kick.

The bodyguard’s eyes flickered. He also saw the bulge in Mu Lan’s tummy. He pretended to be looking at the monitor when in fact he was secretly staring at Mu Lan’s face and abdomen.

"The baby is healthy. Her length is consistent with babies of her age. The heartbeat is normal." The doctor explained. She printed the result of the ultrasound and handed it to the bodyguard. She also handed him a prescription of vitamins that she needed to take.

"Come back after a month for a follow-up check-up and be very careful as you are entering your last trimester." She handed Mu Lan a few sheets of paper towel so she could wipe off the gel on her stomach.

The bodyguard pushed her wheelchair out of the room. Mu Lan saw some pregnant women queuing up for an ultrasound. She was lucky that she didn’t have to line up. However, when she saw that most of the pregnant women had their husbands alongside them, she was envious.

She was jealous!
