Chapter 115: A Helping Hand

"His wife needed to be operated on and he was desperate and pushed to a corner. He just loves his wife too much and it touched me so I promised to help him." Aryana explained in a gentle voice.

"I need to go. Stay here and rest first. I’ll pick you up later." Erik kissed her on the forehead and left.

Aryana visited Vince in the charity ward. She then inquired what is the name of his wife.

"Her name is Jessa Pison. She is in ward 501. My mother is currently taking care of her." Vince gave her the information she needed.

"Miss Jones, can I be discharged? I am already fine." Vince was worried about the medical fees.

"You should stay here for at least a day. How can you take care of your wife in that condition?"

Vince has no choice but to listen to her. Indeed he was beaten really bad by his two colleagues.

Aryana went to the hospital’s cashier and paid the deposit on behalf of the patient Jessa Pison. She then decided to visit Jessa but bumped with Alex on the way.

"Aryana, I visited you in the ward but you are not there. Erik called me and told me to take care of you. What is a patient doing, roaming around the hospital?" Alex asked her.

"Do I look like a patient to you?"

Alex scanned her from head to toe. Apart from the visible bruise on her wrists, she doesn’t seem to be sick or have external injury at all. So he shook his head.

"See? I told Erik that I am alright. He is very stubborn and insisted to bring me here."

"What happened to you? Erik was in a hurry when he called he did not give me much detail."

"It is nothing serious." Aryana suddenly thought of something. "But maybe you can help me with something?" Aryana asked. She had interacted with Alex a few times and she felt comfortable with him.

"What is it?" Alex asked. He was surprised to hear Aryana asking for his help.

"The wife of an acquaintance of mine is confined here. She was a victim of hit and run. They are poor. She urgently need surgery to remove the blood clot in her brain otherwise she will die. This is the information shared to me by her husband." Aryana tried to provide Alex a summary of Jessa’s case.

"I paid the required down payment so the surgery can be done. Can you look at her case and recommend a good surgeon?" Aryana looked at Alex with pleading eyes.

Alex was mesmerized. He seemed drawn to the unique color of Aryana’s eyes.

"Of course." Alex did not mean to agree right away but he just agreed.

They were walking while having the conversation and before Alex realized it, they entered and exited the elevator.

"This is the ward." Aryana announced when they were standing in front of room 501.

The ward was very small. It was less than half the size of Aryana’s ward. There was a middle aged woman sitting on a chair beside the small bed. She should be Vince’s mother.

A frail young woman was lying still on the bed, her head was bandaged with layers of gauze and an oxygen mask on her face. Aryana could see that the young woman was beautiful.

"Good afternoon Madam. I am a friend of Vince and this Doctor Alex Chen. We are here to visit."

Vince’s mother was shy. She bowed after greeting them and did not say anything afterwards.

Alex pressed the bell. They waited for some time but no nurse came. He pressed the bell again, still no one came.

"Maybe the bell is not working?" Aryana arched an eyebrow.

"Impossible!"

"Let me guess. They are not used to hearing a bell from this room or they are busy attending to rich patients."

Alex was pissed off. This hospital boasts of its quality service regardless of the patient’s status.

He pressed the bell again. This time he pressed it long and hard.

A nurse finally came inside the ward. She was impatient and seemed angry.

"What do you want?" She asked harshly. She was well aware that the patient in this room was poor. The patient’s companion was very shy and normally do not bother the nurses.

Her eyes widened when she realized who was in the room.

"Director Chen!" She said anxiously. Beads of perspiration started to appear on her forehead.

"What took you so long? If something happened to the patient, she could have died before you show up here?"

"I’m sorry Director Chen, it will not happen again." The nurse apologized.

"Give me the patient’s records including her scans. Who is her attending doctor?"

"It’s Doctor Torres, Director Chen." After answering him, the nurse hurried out of the ward and returned immediately with the patient’s records.

Alex studied the medical records and he looked at the images of the brain scans. He frowned. The patient’s case was complicated and yet the surgeon handling her case was a newbie who doesn’t have much experience.

"Is it that bad?" Aryana can read facial expression. She knew there was something wrong by the way Alex reacted.

Alex of course cannot disclose some information to Aryana.

"I will recommend a good surgeon but the professional fee will be quite high." Alex evaded her question.

Aryana had already expected that. But she promised to help them and she will not go back on her word.

"A life is more important than money. Money can be earned again but a life once lost is lost forever."

Alex looked at Aryana with great admiration. ’What beautiful words.’

"She must be very close to you for you to do this much."

Aryana just smiled and gave a vague answer. "Actually I don’t know her. I am just inspired by how much her husband loved her that he would do anything to save her, because she is his everything."

Alex would probably go ballistic if he learned that Vince kidnapped her for a ransom so he could pay for her wife’s medical bills.

"When can the surgery happen? Her husband said that the blood clot should be removed soon, other wise her life will be endangered." Aryana asked.

"I’ll arrange for a meeting with the neuro surgery department tomorrow. Her surgery cannot be delayed any further." Alex replied while he studied the patient on the bed.

"I am thankful that I bumped into you today."

"Then show your gratitude by going back to your ward. Erik will kill me if he finds out that you are running around the hospital instead of resting."
