Chapter 124: Chapter 124

Nodding with a smile towards Ye Tian, the middle-aged woman walked past with her dog, leaving behind a trail of perfume scent in Ye Tian’s nose. Sniffing, Ye Tian shook his head – the scent was too pungent for his liking. What he enjoyed was the unadorned natural fragrance from Tang Su, the body scent of a woman which was the most pleasant. It’s just that many women didn’t realize this.

Continuing forward, treading on the broken stones and glazed bricks, he plucked a stalk of foxtail grass and chewed on it. It wasn’t long before he arrived at the breach in the wall he’d seen during the day. The gap was still there, not repaired at all. Ye Tian turned on his flashlight and looked around before moving on to the next location.

The man from Hunan in the security room had mentioned to Ye Tian that not many people usually lived here, mainly only coming with their mistresses on weekends for fun; it was little more than a pleasure den, or in other words, a high-class hair salon. They didn’t care how sturdy the walls were, even considering the electric fences an eyesore, and at one point demanded the removal of the wall and the fences because they looked like a prison.

While Ye Tian was contemplating solutions in his head, his eyes vigilantly scanned the surroundings. No matter what the residents thought, it was his duty to ensure the safety of this place. Before making a move, he had to establish a solid foundation, and this Fengyue Lake was his new base.

"Ah!"

A scream pierced the boundless night. Ye Tian immediately switched off his flashlight and ran frantically towards the source of the sound. When he arrived, it turned out to be the dog-walking woman he had just encountered.

"What happened!" Ye Tian rushed forward and shielded the still-screaming woman behind him. The Golden Retriever crouched in front of them, growling lowly. Ye Tian turned on his flashlight and a bright light illuminated several snakes of different shapes writhing on the ground.

Where did these snakes come from?

"Duo Duo, come here, stop barking!" The Golden Retriever responded and scurried over, crouching next to the woman and still growling softly.

Spotted snakes, grass snakes, and several other small ones – all non-venomous snakes. Fortunately, they hadn’t caused any harm to people or animals. Ye Tian called for others on the walkie-talkie while handling these snakes.

By handling, he essentially meant collecting them in a garbage bin so they wouldn’t run around and possibly harm others.

Watching the security guard grabbing snakes with his bare hands, the woman’s face turned pale, uttering "Be careful" while speeding away with her Golden Retriever. Ye Tian didn’t mind; her leaving made his job easier. Besides, he didn’t like this woman very much. According to Pig Hu, she was a mistress of a young master with a mother complex, who tended to go for older women. The one leading the dog just now was on the younger side among them.

Just the thought of it made one feel disgusted.

After receiving Ye Tian’s call, only Pig Hu arrived; Zhang Houtu was on duty today and couldn’t come over for the time being.

"Ye Tian, someone’s messing with us," said Pig Hu, looking at the snakes twisting in the garbage bin, sucking in air through his teeth as if he had a toothache.

Ye Tian, holding a stick, prodded the snakes in the bin without saying a word.

"These assholes are really malicious, putting snakes here. Getting bitten is no joke. We don’t even know how many they’ve released."

Ye Tian threw away the stick in his hand and asked, "Is there a way to lure the snakes over?"

Pig Hu was taken aback, then said, "There is a way, but it’s somewhat noisy."

"Who gives a damn about you in the middle of the night."

"Got it, understood."

Huairou is on the outer fringes of Beiping City, almost separated from Beiping. Apart from the relatively well-known Miyun Reservoir, hardly anyone knows about this place. Despite the annual calls for developing a tourist area, there’s been nothing but slogans and no action. In general, this place is still considered the wilderness.

"Ye Tian, think this through carefully. If we mess this up, we might attract all the snakes in the vicinity."

Ye Tian squatted down and grabbed a handful of soil from the flower bed, scattering it into the air. The fine dust drifted away with the southeast wind. "Over there is the development site. It’s not that spooky. Plus, we’re surrounded by walls. I don’t believe snakes can turn into spirits and climb over the walls to get in."

Hearing him say that, Pig Hu stopped the chatter, took out a lighter, and ignited a pile of waste paper and dry grass on the ground. The yellow flames slowly licked the straw, followed by smaller twigs, and finally the thicker branches.

Pig Hu took a garden snake out of the trash can, pinched it at the vital point seven inches down, and squeezed hard. The snake’s body went limp – hitting its heart. Crush this part, and the snake would die.

Pig Hu tossed the snake into the fire, sparking many embers. The flame suddenly turned blue. Soon, a pungent smell spread through the air.

"Throw in another."

Seeing the first snake nearly charred, Ye Tian said coldly. Pig Hu didn’t hesitate, grabbing, pinching, throwing – his movements were swift and neat, making it clear this lad was no stranger to such actions in the wilderness.

"Throw in a couple more. I refuse to believe they only tossed a few in here."

Determined, Ye Tian personally grabbed two snakes. Without Pig Hu’s technique, he simply twisted their heads off and threw them into the fire while their bodies were still wriggling. The embers scattered wildly, and some of the burning branches snapped.

"Does this method of yours really work? Don’t snakes sense by temperature? Since when do they follow scents?" Ye Tian asked, looking at the now empty trash can.

Pig Hu scratched his head, "Should be right. Last time I went to Shanxi, we ran out of provisions, and those guys caught some snakes to roast and eat. As soon as we started roasting, didn’t matter at all – it attracted all the surrounding snakes. That scene... it almost cost me my life... Did you hear that?"

"Rustle, rustle rustle..."

A series of shuffling sounds approached, the number decreasing as they drew closer, adding an unnamed fear to the darkness.

Pig Hu pulled Ye Tian back a bit and added some wood to the fire, making it burn brighter, "Step back, stand behind the fire."

Gradually, Ye Tian finally saw the source of those sounds – a swarm of snakes crawling over, at least twenty or thirty of them, thick and thin, long and short, without exception, all heading towards the firelight. The leader was a garden snake, the kind often seen in vegetable gardens, golden and big, non-venomous and docile. Behind it were smaller snakes.

Feeling the firelight ahead, all the snakes stopped in their tracks, as if by will, and confronted the two men across the blaze.
