Chapter 37: From the scratch

Dora pacified the baby in the best way she could but it wasn’t working. She sighed deeply, Nyx was so tired and had fell asleep and she didn’t have the heart to wake her up.

She wasn’t conversant with babies and she didn’t know how to feed him. She was confused and frustrated.

She sighed, "My goodness, he can’t stay hungry forever."

She walked around the room feeling so bad and helpless. There was no way she could wake Nyx up, and the baby didn’t have the opportunity to feed before Nyx fell asleep.

"Archi, I’m sorry, but you have to hold on, your mother is asleep and she can not be woken up. Please hold on, you just have to."

His cries had intensified, and was getting worse. She was worried he would lose his voice.

"Oh gosh, he is just a new born, there is no way he could nibble on some fruits," she gritted her teeth still pacifying him.

"You will be fed very soon, soon enough I hope," she muttered.

Nyx had woken up and was breast feeding the baby. She felt this joy welling up inside of her. This feeling was just too good to be ignored, it felt as if her son was her lover.

She had fallen in love with her child at first sight and it was a bond that was so strong, it was unbreakable.

Dora could only watch the bond between the mother and child.

"Being a mother is not easy at all, gosh, I hope we go through this, especially you Nyx."

Nyx smiled weakly, "I will, as long as my Archi is with me, I will definitely pass through, there is nothing that can hold me back now."

Dora nodded, "I can see that, but..."

Nyx looked up at her, "But what?"

"The baby needs to be properly taken care of, he does not have any clothes of his own, and of course his own bed, do you not think sleeping on the mat with us will make him uncomfortable?" She shrugged.

Nyx thought about it for a while, "We do not have a choice Dora, if we had one, we would have gone for it, but we have none."

"If we had some wool, I would have knitted something for him," Dora said.

"Dora, we can not keep living like this, if we really want to survive, we have to blend with other people."

"And how do we do that?"

"We could well, start rendering any kind of service, any kind at all."

Dora thought for a while, "You are right, but what exactly?"

"If we had some wool..."

Dora eyes brightened, "Ha! I’ve got it! We could knit sweaters! I used to knit very beautiful sweaters back then, I could do so, and I know exactly where to find some wool although he might demand something in exchange."

"Uh.. do we have anything in exchange for it?"

Dora stood up and went over to the small wardrobe, she brought out a bead, looking at it, one would know it was a very costly one.

Nyx put the baby away from her breast, cuddled him and put him to sleep.

"Where did you get that?"

"I have always had it, since I could remember, it has always been with me."

"Then why do you want to give it out? Do you not treasure it?"

"I do but we can not starve, we have a baby and you to take care of."

Nyx felt touched, "Oh my goodness, thank you so much, I certainly do not deserve this kindness from you."

"You more than deserve it, you really deserve it, you are a good person too."

Nyx leaned forward and hugged Dora, "I hope to repay you some day," she whispered.

"It is nothing," she smiled.

"I will head out there tomorrow, I need to get the wool, I knit and then go out to the market and sell it. That should keep us from time to time."

Nyx nodded, "Yes, thank you so much."

"You do not have to thank me, I have to do it."

"We go again tomorrow, this baby needs to be brought up well, he should not be put through so much stress," they disengaged from the hug.

Nyx’s eyes welled up with tears of gratitude, "I do not have any words to thank you enough, I might not be able to even thank you enough."

"It is okay, stop making it look like a big deal, it is actually nothing," she shrugged.

She smiled and wiped her eyes.

"Have some rest, do not bother about it too much, I will do all those tomorrow, all you need now is rest."

Dora wrapped up the bead in a small cloth. She made sure to keep it in a very safe place.

...

"I will be heading out Nyx. I promise to be back early enough."

"Okay, I wish you a safe journey forth and back," Nyx said.

"Thank you," she headed out.

Dora headed out to get the bales of wool. She had a lot on her mind. She wanted to commence on knitting so many sweaters as soon as possible.

She could knit, she could also weave. All she wanted was just to keep their little family running. Her heart was already out to Archi, she wanted him to get all he wanted.

She hurried to thr outskirts of the forest, because that was where he was located. The morning was still very early, and she wanted to be done with knitting before sunset. She would knit as much as she could, stack them and prepare them for sale the next day.

She got to his place just before the sun rose, she exchanged her costly bead for the bales of wool.

Happily, she hurried back home.

How come she didn’t think of this all along? This would go a long way to keep them together. This would be another start from the scratch.
