Chapter 27: A tough living
Nyx opened her eyes weakly, she was still on the same spot she had blacked out. She sniffed and slowly rose up from the ground. Her head was throbbing, she looked around, no one was near by.
Her eyes still spun so she stood there for a while so she wouldn’t fall down. When she felt she was good to go, she took a step forward.
Her stomach growled and she remembered she hadn’t had dinner nor breakfast. Her basket wasn’t with her so there was no way she could pick grapes.
She was too weak to walk, but she managed to carry herself.
She managed to walk home, all by herself, trembling as she walked.
She finally got home, her head was still swirling with emotions and thoughts, she didn’t want to starve her baby and she also didn’t know where to get food from.
She opened her door and went inside, a empty, cold house greeted her.
"What will I do now? There is nothing around here, no one to borrow from, nowhere to get more food."
She gulped and headed to the kitchen, though she knew there was nothing in the pots, she still opened it and found the pots empty.
Her stomach growled again, "I’m so hungry," she bit her lips.
She sighed and walked to back to the dining room and sat on a chair.
She was tired, weak and frustrated, she literally didn’t know what to do next.
"If only, I could get a miracle, I have no more baskets, and I am too weak to go back there," she sniffed.
She looked at the ceiling, "Help, I just need some help right now," her eyes welled up with tears.
She closed her eyes and tried to calm herself down, but it didn’t seem to work. She stood up and headed outside.
"I can’t starve, my baby can’t starve either," she gathered all the strength in her and walked to the back of her cottage.
The fruits were not grown yet, so there was no way she could pluck them out and make breakfast.
She sighed, "I don’t think I can walk that far, I almost do not have any strength left," she said to herself.
She sat on a broken branch, gently rubbing her baby bump, "I do not know how much I can take," she whispered.
She closed her eyes and inhaled one more time, she calmed down a little, "Think, just think, there should be something I can do," she gulped down nervously.
There was nothing in her head but her growling stomach forced her to think, the fruits were just beginning to mature but they were not fully matured yet.
She bit her lips, she was very hungry but she knew she shouldn’t eat unripe fruits but her hunger made her do otherwise.
She gathered what she could and went inside, she tried to hurry up with her cooking but the metal steamer was just another frustration that morning.
"Goodness!" She almost yelled out her frustration.
She calmed down and tried fixing the metal steamer but got it broken in the process. She felt completely weak and sat down on a stool trying so hard to not outburst.
She sighed, there was another option, using firewoods. She gathered herself again and walked back to the back of her cottage to gather some dry branches.
She kindled a fire, and went back inside the house to take her pot, and set it over the firewoods.
"This is going to take forever," she whispered.
She sat down on a branch again and waited for her fruits to cook.
"I could at least use this to fill my stomach for the time being," she sighed.
When she was sure her fruits were cooked enough, she took them back into the house. Her seasonings weren’t much but she took the little ones left and added them to her fruits to make them better for eating.
She served herself and began to munch on her food hungrily, she was too hungry to eat it gently, it was when she had choked on her food, she remembered to get herself some water to drink.
"Ah," she sighed in relief, she had just finished eating.
"I’m so sorry Archi, you have to eat all these but I had no choice, I promise I will go look for some thing better later in the day," she pouted, rubbing her baby bump gently.
When she was sure she was strong enough to go out, she stood up and headed outside, she remembered that her basket was taken away from her the other night so she had to carve something that would serve as a basket.
"This should do it," she looked at her roughly made basket in her hands.
She had to walk all the way back to the blueberries bush, she had the intention of picking the berries then afterwards she’d pick the grapes.
She was still picking the berries when she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen, she clutched her abdomen.
"Ah," she groaned in pain.
"What is happening all of a sudden?" She asked no one in particular.
The pain continued and it grew more worse, she could only groan.
"My baby," she sniffed, "Nothing will happen to you Archi," she said still clutching her stomach.
She remembered her mother had once said that, if a pregnant woman worked too much in the early stages of her pregnancy, it would lead to a miscarriage.
She was alarmed, was this a miscarriage? She wasn’t ready to lose her child. She felt something trickling down her legs and noticed it was blood, she was bleeding!
She began to panic, this was one of the signs of miscarriage!
"No, my baby, I can not just lose my child!" She cried.
She was still bleeding and didn’t know what to do, the only thing she could do was scream for help even though she knew no one was near by.
"Help! Something help me please!"
Who knows? Someone could possibly hear her scream for help.
"Someone help me please!" The pain in her legs grew more intense and she could no longer bear the pain.
Slowly she sat on the ground, groaning and crying in pain.
"Please Archi, don’t leave me," she begged.
She was still bleeding and her thoughts were going wild.
