Chapter 249: Kaelos’s new family
Dora was sitting in the garden with Nyx when a maid came over, her head slightly bowed.
"Good day my ladies," she bowed.
"Uhm, my Lady," she faced Dora, "You have a visitor."
Dora blinked, "Who is it?"
Her cheeks flushed, "My lady.."
"Just go see for yourself," Nyx urged her.
Dora got to her feet, "Lead the way then."
The maid turned on her heels, walking out of the garden, with Dora following behind.
They walked to the living room where she was expecting her august visitor.
The maid bowed, then left.
Dora stood there, her hands numb at her sides, "Neriah?"
He whipped his head in her direction, "Oh, you are here," he stood up, flashing her a graceful smile.
She rubbed her arms, "What- are you doing here?"
He lowered his gaze, "You should come sit first," he rubbed his hands together.
She closed the gap between them, "So, what has happened this time around?" She slowly sat down, Kaelos beside her.
"Astrid is dead," he announced.
"Astrid? Your step-brother?" She turned to look at him, her hands covering her mouth.
"Yes. He died in battle, his body was brought back a few nights ago," he exhaled deeply.
"Oh dear, I- do not want to say. I am.."
"Do not apologize," he shrugged, "It is not your fault he is dead."
"His wife?"
"She has become quieter, I do not know if she is planning to stay or leave."
Dora shook her head, "How do you feel?"
"Feel? I do not feel anything. What should I feel?" He turned to face her.
"Maybe you are a little hurt."
He scoffed, "Not once were we closed. He was constantly trying to sabotage me or, mock me at the slightest incident. I do not feel even an ounce of sadness for him."
"Hm, well," she shook her head, "That is fine then."
"That is part of the reason I came here."
"Why else did you come?"
"Now he is dead, I have full access to the throne. Astrid’s wife did not birth a son," he swallowed, "Unfortunately for him. I bet he was facing a lot of pressure from the elders even before he died."
"Wait, you are the King now?" Her eyes widened, "Wow, that is good news! You have finally gotten what you wanted on a platter of gold."
He sighed, "I know, but then, my throne would not be complete without you, and Klaus."
"Are they demanding I be there with him?"
"No, but then I do not want to be coronated without you, and my son at my side. I want the both of you to witness it."
Her cheeks flushed, "When is the coronation ceremony?"
"The next full moon," he sighed, "I want you to be there," he hesitated, before finally saying it, "Please come back home with me."
She shifted uncomfortably on the chair, "I..do not know about that," she looked away.
"Why? Please. If your brother could start all over with Nyx, why can we not do the same? I am ready to do anything you ask, just please come back."
She clasped her hands together, "This came quite late."
He took her hand, "I would not take you there when Astrid was still in power. He is cunning, and that could cause a whole other problem."
She inhaled deeply, "I need some time.."
He squeezed her hand gently, "Come on Dora. I know deep down somewhere, you still love me, just say yes, be mine again."
His hand came up to rest on the right side of her cheek, making her look him in the eye.
"I want you back, I want you to be with me. I want our son to grow into a young man with the both of us showering love on him. Do you not want that?"
Her eyes sparked, "I do-," her lips turned downwards.
"Then come back with me. We still start all over. We would organize our mating ceremony, and finalize this."
Her cheeks flushed as she rubbed her arms, her pupils darting around, "Finalize this?" She could feel her cheeks burning.
"Yes. Our wolves should not continue to be apart anymore. You should become mine, and as soon as possible too."
She inhaled, "You are right," she snaked her arms around his neck, "I will go back with you," she whispered in his ears.
He pulled her closer, burying his face in the crook of her neck, "Thank you so much," his voice was muffled against her hair.
She let her hands tangle in his hair, "We are going to start all over," she chuckled.
"For real, this time," he gently pulled her hair.
"Ow!" She pulled back, "You still have this.. attitude of being-" her face went red.
"Of being what?" Mischief twinkled in his eyes, "Say it."
She raised her nose in the air, annoyed, "Ugh, you have not changed one bit."
"Why would I? I am still the same. I hope my son got that trait?" A sly smile spread across his face.
"He definitely took after me," her eyes gleamed with pride.
"Tsk," he rolled his eyes.
"Do you want to speak with him?"
His heart skipped several beats. He had not talked to him, once, talking to him now would seem quite.. tasking.
"Do not worry, he will understand," she tapped his legs, standing up.
"Let us go then," he scratched his neck nervously, also getting up.
She led him through the hallways, until they reached Klaus’ room.
"This is his room," she whispered, then knocked on the door.
"Who is it?" A hoarse voice asked from within.
"Klaus my dear, it is your mother. Please come open the door."
Soon, the door clicked open, "Mother, is it time for dinner already?"
"No, we have a visitor."
His eyes left hers, then rested on Kaelos’. In the first few seconds, they just stared at each other, not saying a word.
"I will leave you two now," she slipped away leaving them to themselves.
"Good day sir, how may I help you?"
Kaelos felt something gnaw at his heart when his son called him sir.
""Can I come in? We have a lot to talk about."
He arched his brow, "Hm, okay," he stepped aside, allowing him entry.
Kaelos entered the room, his eyes scanning everywhere as soon as he entered. There was a canvas at the far end of the room indicating he was working on a painting.
"You have such an organized room. I am not sure that I was this organized your age," he shook his head, a small smile on his face.
"Thank you. Have a seat," he quickly drew out a chair for him.
"Thank you," he sat down.
Klaus sat down at his feet, "So, what is it you want to tell me?"
Kaelos closed his eyes taking in a deep breath, he opened his eyes, "Did your mother ever mention your father to you?"
"Hm, she said he lived in another pack far away from here. I always wondered why he did not come to visit me, but then I have already accepted it as part of my fate."
His heart broke. He sucked his lower lip in, "You are looking at him right now."
Klaus’s eyes widened, his entire body going rigid. His lips parted slightly, but no words came out. A deep crease formed between his brows as his breathing grew uneven. He blinked rapidly, his gaze locked onto Kaelos as if searching for a lie. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, and his throat bobbed as he swallowed hard. "What?" The word barely escaped his lips, a mix of shock and disbelief.
"Yes, I am your father, who lives very far away from this pack," he rushed his words.
Klaus’ jaws dropped, "You are alive? And you did not bother to even check up on me once?"
Kaelos’ breath hitched, "It is a lot more complicated than it actually is."
Klaus face went red, "Why are you just coming now? In the years that flew by, you did not realize that I was alive, somewhere?"
He took in a deep breath. He expected this reaction, now he just had to explain properly.
"I am sorry, son. You see, I have not mated your mother yet, the time she had you in her womb, I was trying to secure my throne, but I eventually lost it. I- did regret having to impregnate her back then, but with the years that have passed, I think it was a blessing after all."
Klaus let out a bitter laugh, his eyes burning with fury. His hands clenched into tight fists at his sides as his chest rose and fell with each sharp breath.
"A blessing?" he spat, his voice laced with venom. "You call it a blessing now? After years of leaving us in the dark? Do you have any idea what it was like growing up without a father? Watching my mother struggle alone while I wondered why the man who gave me life never once cared enough to show his face?"
"Please listen to me my son-"
"No! Even though uncle Oberon did all he could to make her happy, I always noticed she was not," he rose to his feet, "How could you do that to her? She was in a lot of pain!"
His body trembled with rage, his nails digging into his palms. "You say you lost your throne? Well, congratulations, because you lost your family too. And do not stand there acting like you care all of a sudden, if you did, you would have come sooner! You would have found me! But no, you left us. You abandoned us like we meant nothing!"
"That is not the truth, I really did care," Kaelos also stood up, "As I said, it was really complicated. My brother Astrid would have made life difficult for us if I took you there with me."
Klaus’s voice cracked, raw with pain, but he refused to let it soften. His eyes, now glistening with unshed tears, locked onto Kaelos with pure contempt. "You could have come here right? Tsk, You do not get to call me ’son’ like you have earned that right."
"It is not as easy as you think it is. Your mother was really mad at me, she would not even look me in the face."
"She was wronged of course, who would not feel that way?" He scrunched his nose up in disgust, "I can not believe you are the one who I should call father."
Kaelos felt as though Klaus had just driven a dagger straight into his chest. His breath hitched, and for a brief moment, his vision blurred. He had expected anger, even hatred, but hearing those words aloud coming from his own son who was rejecting him so completely, made it heart-wrenching in a way he hadn’t prepared for.
His jaw tightened, but no amount of composure could mask the raw pain flashing in his eyes. He swallowed hard, trying to force down the lump that had formed in his throat. His hands trembled slightly before he forced them into stillness, curling them into fists at his sides.
"I deserve that," he admitted, his voice quieter now, almost hoarse. "I deserve all of it." He forced himself to hold Klaus’s gaze, even as the disgust in his son’s eyes cut him deeper than any blade ever could.
"Tsk, your pretences even worsen it."
"No my son. All I am displaying now, are raw emotions as they are. I really did not mean bad for your mother or anyone, but then I had to do what I thought should be done."
"My late step-brother hated me. He would have made life difficult for your mother, you, and me, if I tried bringing you two there. I had to bear it alone, I would not bring the two of you in the hell I was already living in."
The creases on Klaus’ head slowly disappeared, "How do I know you are telling the truth?"
"Your mother knew about him, he was ruthless. He almost harassed her once the time she was there, thank the goddess I was there that day."
Klaus looked away, the emotions in his eyes unsettling.
"My son, try to understand that I would never mean harm for either of you. I really love, and care for you both. Believe me," he closed the gap between them.
He clenched his jaw, "You did not watch me grow in my infact years."
"I could watch you blossom into a strong, young, and brave King as the years go by."
Klaus broke down in sobs. The emotions he was feeling at that moment, all came washing on him at once. Kaelos pulled him into his arms.
"I am sorry son. I did a bad job, but I can surely make everything right again. All I am asking for is a chance from you."
Klaus cried for a long time, his body shaking from his sobbing.
"Do you promise never to leave me again?"
"You are going to be with me forever, I would not leave you," he caressed his hair.
"I.. forgive you then, since mother seems fine with you."
Kaelos’s heart clenched, his son was forgiving him on a basis. Well, it was better than him not being forgiven at all, he could work with that.
***
"Are we ready?"
"Yes, all set."
Nyx stood behind Oberon, while Archi stood at her side watching Kaelos, Dora, and Klaus finally leave the palace.
"Make sure to attend the mating ceremony," Kaelos told them.
"We will not miss it," Archi assured him.
Oberon gave them his blessings, and they set off. Off to a new start in their life.
