Chapter 226: In for a surprise

Chapter 226: In for a surprise

Nyx was heading back to the servant’s quarters. The doctor was still trying all he could to revive Klaus. On her way, she passed two maids gossiping.

"I heard that the new guard was taken to the throne room in the early hours of this morning, I am wondering what exactly his problems is," one of maids shook her head.

"He does seem to be trouble, I do not know why, but I do not just feel right about him."

"He is good-looking though," she chuckled, "His grey eyes are just like the king’s."

Nyx heard them talking, and she immediately knew they were talking about Archi. Her heart sank as she heard he was taken to the throne room again.

"What did he do again?" Her lips quivered.

She began to hurry to the guard’s quarters instead, she did not want her son to be hurt, not when he was the only one she had.

In her anxiety, she didn’t notice someone says coming her way. She bumped into the person.

"Sorry, I did not see.." she raised her eyes to look at him. It was Oberon.

"Isla? What is the matter?" He asked.

"Oh, it is nothing, your majesty," she answered dryly, then bowed.

"Are you sure? Your eyes look worried," he arched his brows.

"Your majesty, I apologize, but I am in a hurry," she tapped her right foot.

"How are you?"

"I am well, thank you your majesty," she gave him a shoulder bow.

He found her actions quite funny that morning, "Oh well, I am pleased to see you," he smiled.

Her mind darted back to her son, and she panicked all the more.

"My son, is he okay?"

He nodded, "He is well, I did see him this morning. He was accused of killing the assistant head guard."

Her heart hammered against her chest. What exactly was Archi doing?

She bit her lips, "Killed someone? What? He would..."

"I know, there was no proof he did so, you need not worry," he patted her head.

Hearing this, she calmed down a little, "Well, thank the goddess," she exhaled deeply.

"Is that the reason you are so tensed up?" He flashed her a teasing smile, "You worry about your son so much, you remind me of.." he trailed off.

She lifted her eyes a bit to stare into his, giving him a long, expressionless stare.

He stretched his hand, "Could you stay with me for a while? I am really worked up," he bit his lower lip.

"I.. am not so sure about that," she stuttered.

"Come on, please. For some reason, you seem to have an effect on me," he twisted his lips, "It is ridiculous, I know," he laughed nervously.

"Please."

She thought about it for a while, then reluctantly agreed, "Okay then," she swallowed, then walked ahead of him.

"Where are we going?" She asked.

"To the garden," he replied, "I like that place," he inhaled deeply.

"Okay."

He closed the distance between them, "You are so small," he broke the silence.

She rolled her eyes, "How is that related?"

"You just remind me of her, I am sure she was as the same height as you are, maybe just smaller," he felt his cheeks redden, "She was just pretty."

Her heart tightened, threatening to sink into her stomach.

"Does everything remind you of her?" She almost snapped at him.

By this time, they had reached the door, it was pushed open by the guards who gave Oberon a bow.

"You remind me of her. No one else has acted close to the way she behaves, but you."

They walked outside, then took a right turn to the garden.

"Isla," he called.

"Hm?"

"What pack are you from?"

She froze. Archi didn’t tell her how to respond to this question if asked.

"Well.. the neighboring pack. Why?"

"Which of them?"

"Why does that bother you, your highness? Do you have a problem with wolves from neighboring packs?"

"No, I am just curious. Well, considering the kind of aura you, and your son both have, I would like to know which of the packs you are from."

She shrugged her shoulder, "I do not want to think about them, they were just horrible to us. I do not like thinking about them," she lied.

"Hmm."

They had reached the garden. He led her to a bench, then they sat down.

He glanced at her, the back at the trees, "I like your son. I am never truly interested in any of the guards, but he just happened to strike my interest."

"I am glad," she replied cooly.

"But then again, everything has been going wrong since he came here. He had gotten into a fight with the head guard, gotten into fights with some other guards, so I was told, Plus I think a lot of them hate him."

"Ever since I carried him in my womb, literally everything had been going wrong. At a point, I was thinking I was going to die."

"I am sorry, it must have been hard for you both. I can not imagine how that feels."

She scoffed. Of course, he did not.

"I am not surprised, we are so used to it, it is becoming a part of our daily lives."

"Do not say that," he reached for her hand, "You never know, maybe all of this is.."

"I would rather not hear it," she politely cut him off, "Let it lie."

He swallowed the lump in his throat, "Of course," he said quietly, then rested back on the bench.

There was silence for the next few minutes. Nyx’s heart was not settled, it was pounding hard, she didn’t know what sitting close to him would bring.

"Why is your face covered?" He finally broke the silence.

"My choice."

"Oh, right, right. It is quite odd though."

"The point is to stand out, and not blend in right?" She shrugged her shoulders.

"I like that about you," he then made her face him.

"At least show me your face, I am getting quite curious now," he tried to reach for her scarf that was hiding her face.

She shook her head, "No!" She slapped his hands back.

"What?"

She immediately rose to her feet, "You are supposed to respect privacy your highness, what are you doing?" She snapped.

"I am sorry Isla, it is just that, you intrigue me, I just cannot help myself, can you just show me how you look like? Come on," a smile played at the corner of his lips.

"I.. can not.."

"Why?" He also stood up, "I am sure you are one pretty she wolf."

"All those are assumptions. I would not want to disappoint you," she took a step backwards.

Oberon narrowed his eyes, "Hmm,’ before she could say anything else, he closed the distance between them, grabbed her hand, then let his hand reach for the scarf.

"Your majesty!" She gasped, trying to break free from his grip.

"What?"

"This is not right! You are trying to invade my privacy," she lashed at him, "Is this how you treat..."

He let go of her, "I only wanted to satisfy my curiousity," he tightened his lips, "There is no need for all these."

Nyx’s eyes just turned blank. Was he even worth retuning back to?

With these thoughts in mind, she turned on her heels, then walked away.
