Chapter 95: Love & Pups

ZINA

Sybril took a step forward as if to make a point. "This might sound as an excuse to your ears, but the Knight’s never really did make a move against you?"

Zina scoffed, although she wasn’t exactly angry at the woman. Ever since she came back, the elder had been trying to convince Zina not to hold a ’grudge’ since in reality, ’all’ Zina had was the Temple. The reminder of Zina’s pitiable standing all made her angrier. It was as if she was running in circles in her life, never able to stand on her own.

"It’s quite unfortunate that said Knight’s are now cannon fodder for Daemon NorthSteed. I am afraid I can’t inquire anymore about their intentions." Zina responded with all the venom she could muster, she could feel anger bubbling up within her.

Zina had heard Sybril’s explanation on how the Eldermen’s move was in reality an empty move to assuage the concerns of the Five Great Evils, but she honestly didn’t care. Empty move or not, this was her life they were talking about.

And they had treated it like nothing... like something so easily discardable.

Elder Sybril sighed in exasperation. "Forget the Temple for a second then, what about Daemon NorthSteed."

Zina drew back from shock mixed with her anger. "What?"

"He is your fated mate and the bond between the both of you has been accepted. Do you truly think that man is capable of harming you after he has audaciously claimed you?"

"Do you ask me to leave my fate with Daemon NorthSteed instead?!" Zina gritted, expelling a bout of angry air that was trapped within her.

Sybril sighed as if greatly exasperated. "Must you always be stubborn? Can you not let go?"

"Let GO?! How can I let go when I am...." Zina trailed, shame not allowing her to say the remainder of the words she purported to say.

When I am the abandoned one.

Her eyes flickered to her staff which she had left behind during her journey to the GreenLands. Now, said staff was leaning against a cold pillar, calling to her and reminding her of all she could ever amount to.

No one will ever truly love you, Zina.

You’re all alone.

A hand pressed against her shoulders in a form yet calming manner. "Zina," Sybril called her by her name which she rarely did. Zina had always been Theta to the woman. "Letting go doesn’t mean recklessness. Letting go will offer you some ease, you mustn’t always be harsh on yourself. Have you not imagined it? That the goddess must have something else planned for you by making you his mate?"

Zina paused, as if almost thinking over the words. But then she shook her head violently backing away from Sybril’s touch.

When Xalea Borne had his claws against her neck, Zina’s life had flashed before her. She had always heard that when death knocks, the dying would see the face of their loved ones.

But in Zina’s case, she had seen nothing. And it had nothing to do with her blindness, she had simply seen nothing. It was like she was walking a dark path with different hands darting out to drag her down.

And when her life had finally been taken, as one lone tear rolled down her cheeks, the vision of Daemon in all his glory which Zina had carried with her from her childhood flashed through her eyes much like lightning would.

Zina still didn’t understand why it had to be him. Whether as the last man she saw before she died, or whether as her second chance mate, Zina didn’t understand why she had to be inextricably tied to the one man she had the most embarrassing entanglements with suffice to say.

She was beginning to understand the words of her younger self. Guard your heart and mind.

It wasn’t a vision per say but a warning that stemmed from a place of her insecurities; a warning that if Zina were to preserve the little sanity she had created in her turbulent life, then she must not allow Daemon entrance to any other part of her life than he already has access to.

"Sybril," Zina sighed, burying her turbulent thoughts. "Please, speak no more of this bond. I already see it as a cruel joke from the moon goddess, and I will act as if it doesn’t exist."

And yet you kissed him and were all over him like you couldn’t breathe without him! Her wolf howled and Zina shut out the whinny, growly voice.

Being a shifter was really hard.

"Do you mean to tell me that you expect Daemon NorthSteed to take another as Luna Queen and not you?"

Zina blinked in shock. In reality, she had never thought about Daemon NorthSteed marrying which was strange. What gave her the confidence that a very handsome man with such a vast amount of power would remain single? Zina was appalled at her obliviousness.

"What.... I mean, what makes you think he would want to have me as a Luna Queen? Sybril, please, my head is scattered already as it is. I plan on remaining as Theta and becoming a high priestess so please, stop filling my head with nonsense that is impossible."

When Zina was done spewing the barrage of scattered words floating in head, the response she got was Sybril’s look of shock.

Sybril’s genuine bafflement at her words were concerning though. Zina thought the woman would have gotten used to her self-hatefulness by now, but no, it seemed Sybril was beginning to truly see who Zina WolfKnight really is for the first time....

....as a woman who had no love left for herself.

The woman collected herself and smiled in a manner that might be termed motherly. "Your vows can be lawfully excused for the mate bond. You can also be Theta and Luna at the same time; it hasn’t been done, but I know it can be done by you. I know you wish to be someone powerful... but in our world, most often than not, many women rise to power through marriage and the mate bond. Zina, you do not have to traverse this road of treachery with a hardened heart. You can still walk this part without having to feel alone."

That was a whole speech, and Zina didn’t know how to respond to it. Instead, she found herself struggling to rein in her thoughts from imagining treacherous things.

Like love and pups.

She blinked back the exasperation that tried to overwhelm her when Ablanch’s voice interrupted.

"Theta, the Luna Queen is here to see you."

What? Bella NorthSteed was still there and hadn’t left with Eldric?
