Chapter 94: Her Bloody Nightmares

ZINA

Zina was kneeling at the moon shrine, rubbing her palms fervently as if asking the moon goddess for some miracle. It was the early morning, yet her skin was sweaty and her fingers clammy, and she still was in her slip from the night before.

For reasons that weren’t exactly strange, she had refused to sleep in the Arctic Castle and had resorted to sleeping at the Moon Shrine which she had made her second abode. She honestly simply could not deal with the stifling tension that was sewn shut into every corner of the Castle... but besides that was the dreams that haunted her.

No, it was no dream. It was a nightmare so profound she could taste in on the tips of her lips whenever she screamed herself awake in the middle of the night as she struggled to free herself of the menacing grip of the images that had held her captive.

It would seem as though in addition to gaining her sight, Zina had gained the terrifying ability to see things she would rather not see. Her dreams were filled with blood, blood, and more blood. Sometimes, it felt as though she was the centre of the gory things she saw, other times she felt as though she was watching everything unfold from a distance while trapped in an unnatural body.

It was so strange that it came with a sense of foreboding that was highly unsettling. So Zina, the woman who had never truly prayed despite the fact that she was the Theta of the NorthSteed Pack, was now praying for a vision—something she never did.

It was because she knew it deep in her bones that something terrifying was coming for her; something that would change the course of her life. She knew it because the feeling she had now was the same as the way she felt six years ago when the WolfKnight’s had been supposedly abducted.

She wondered what it could be now; her ordinary mind said that perhaps it would have something to do with Daemon’s truly foreboding comeback, but her instincts told her it was going to be something far bigger and larger than anything she ever anticipated.

’Oh Moon Goddess, I know I’ve not been exactly the most dutiful servant of yours, but don’t you think it’s about time I started seeing visions for myself and not just for others? Can’t you show me this one thing?’

Not like Zina expected much from the woman that used the moon as her bed, but of course silence had greeted her, and she was just as blind as she had ever been when it came to matters of herself. Not even grovelling worked with the moon goddess.

Perhaps it was time she stopped relying on her spiritual sights and used her head instead. What had she missed? What big events had happened around her?

"You’re here again." Elder Sybril’s voice sounded behind her causing Zina to whip her head in the direction of her voice. She had been so engrossed in her thoughts that she had not heard the woman.

"Elder Sybril." Zina greeted, standing from where she had been pathetically kneeling while waiting for a vision that would drop from the heavens. Zina on seeing Sybril for the first time realised first hand that they had not been any much different from how she thought of her when she was blind.

It was as if the world was still the same, just with more colours and annoying details.

"Might I inquire as to why the Theta is kneeling so early in the morning? Do matters of the banished prince still bother you?"

Zina sighed. In the two days that she had spent after coming back, Zina and Sybril had both been brainstorming on how best to restore Daemon’s name. Even if his takeover was to succeed, they would have to face the ire of the Five United Packs who would all want nothing more than to revolt against his claim. He was a banished prince afterall.

Zina’s first attempt at a solution was to invalidate the truthfulness of the vision she told that day, but Sybril had been vehemently against it. The older woman was of the opinion that it would only hurt Zina’s credibility as Theta which wasn’t exactly wrong.

So Zina’s second and final solution was to tell the truth behind her abduction and coercion, but Sybril was of the opinion that that was worse than the first solution. The woman was against anything that would smear Zina’s name, which was comical for as far as Zina could see, all the possible solutions before them would definitely smear her name.

There was no avoiding it—but Sybril was definitely right by saying that Zina needed armour against Daemon, and speaking such truth would only take away her armour and leave her naked to Daemon’s vengeance whenever it would descend on her.

Zina shook her head in response to Sybril’s concerns. "Matters of the banished prince does not concern me; I’ve been having nightmares filled with blood."

Sybril drew closer to her, concern etched on her face. "Perhaps it is regaining your sight so suddenly that triggers such violent nightmares. Considering the ordeal you faced recently, it is not entirely unusual."

Zina sighed, drawing her cloak closer to her body as the streams of the Moon Shrine flowed endlessly to a sound that was calming and healing at the same time. "I don’t think that is what it is." Zina said because in reality she had thought about that theory, and in view of the fact that she saw visions even when she was still blind, it just didn’t make any sense.

"You should rest," Sybril chided lightly, "you’ve barely rested since you came back from the East."

Zina smiled weakly. "How could I possibly rest when Daemon NorthSteed will be acting today."

"Is that why you’re here? Why you’ve refused to stay at the Castle?"

Zina breathed deeply. "Eldric is still nowhere to be found. Well, I suppose the almighty banished prince with his connections probably knows about his whereabouts so I am hardly concerned about that. What I am truly concerned about is what would follow when Daemon NorthSteed becomes Alpha King. Will he be a good ruler? Or have I been wrong about that? What would he do with me?"

"The Temple will protect you, Zina."

Zina scoffed loudly, unable to believe her ears. "You seriously do not believe that to be the truth do you? I mean they’re the same people that sent their Knights that were supposed to protect me to take my life!"
