The Alpha's Blind Fate
Chapter 65: To Rescue Her? Or Wish Her Dead?

Chapter 65: To Rescue Her? Or Wish Her Dead?

DAEMON

After the convoy shifted back to their human form, they were led to Daemon’s tent.

Daemon, who had already left the watchtower simply sat on his chair, the knowledge that his day was just about to get even more interesting fueling him to see the insufferable conversation that was going to happen to the end.

Falcon bursted into the tent like an impatient thing, ten men trailing behind him. Daemon observed that there was nothing that looked remotely little about his little brother. The once eighteen year old boy was now a man.

A look of surprise was etched on Falcon’s face, as he too took Daemon in. There was an uncomfortableness to his expression too, as if unsure of what to say to Daemon, or how to address him. After all, their parting six years ago had been abrupt to say at the least.

As if recovering himself from his momentary shock, Falcon said tentatively. "Daemon."

"Alpha Prince Falcon." Daemon responded curtly, observing the other men.

Among them was the one they called Xalea Borne. The so-called man who was supposed to murder him. In the fight against the rogues, their scouts reported that Borne single-handedly took down at least a hundred rogues.

If the man had been determined even a little bit, protecting Zina WolfKnight would have been possible. But Daemon was beginning to realize that in the game they were in, even the almighty Theta was stuck in the victim loop.

The man bowed curtly on sensing Daemon staring at him, and Daemon’s response was resting his eyes anew on his brother who was surprised at the formality he used to address him.

That surprise waned quickly as his face hardened.

"We have come to bring you the goodwill of the Alpha King Eldric NorthSteed." Falcon said as stiff as possible.

Again, Daemon’s response was merely curving an eyebrow at him.

Undeterred, Falcon continued. "However his majesty personally sent the Theta to deliver his goodwill. But on our way here... the Theta was abducted by the Rogue Army."

"How very sad." Daemon said blandly, certainly not sounding sad. Falcon frowned. It was evident to Daemon that the men behind his little brother didn’t think it was possible for Daemon to attempt to rescue the woman who had all but triggered the chain of events that led to his banishment.

But Falcon evidently didn’t share the same feelings.

"I must ask that you form a team to rescue the Theta."

"I am afraid I cannot do that."

Daemon’s brusque response gave Falcon a start. "Banished prince Daemon NorthSteed," Falcom started in a hardened tone that highly amused Daemon, "you still have duties to the realm. Disregarding the abducted Theta is the same as disregarding the Alpha King’s goodwill."

Daemon could barely stop himself from scoffing at the flamboyant talks. For once, he never pegged Falcon as someone who would grow up so stiffly. But worse could happen in months, so years of not being together was ample time for people to evolve and change.

Saving Daemon from having to utter any more response was a figure bursting into the tent despite Marcus trying to restrain him. Breathing and panting hard, it was revealed to be none other than Alpha Modrich WolfKnight.

Daemon smiled. "Alpha Prince Falcon, who else is better suited to rescue the Theta than her own family." He declared, pointing at the Alpha who was simmering in rage, "here is Alpha Modrich WolfKnight who has come to prove to us that there is no bigger bond than that of family."

Modrich glared, saying nothing. But Daemon could see it, the resignation in his face. Despite being such a lazy, inconsiderate a**, the WolfKnight Alpha had no choice but to finally step into the war.

"Where are those incapable men that could not protect one woman?!" Modrich growled his frustration, staring at the men behind Falcon as if trying to pick a fight.

Yaren stepped in, placing one hand on the man’s bicep. "Back off." he growled as menacing as possible.

Modrich ripped his hand away, still seething.

"Is this your doing?" Modrich said to Daemon with eyes spitting with hatred. Considering that Daemon knew all about the WolfKnight’s sordid history with the Theta, he found his hatred nothing short of amusing. The man was shameless alright.

"What do you mean?" Daemon asked innocently to the man who sold off his pack member for power. There was not much difference between him and Eldric. They were both blood alphas, and while Eldric alleged their father ordered him to take his wolf, Modrich was more forward with the fact that he had murdered his father to become Alpha.

So maybe they were a bit

different after all.

"I hear some people call you Unia, while others call you the Ripper." Modrich grinned sadistically, "say as Unia, you didn’t somehow instigate this?!"

"How dare you accuse the banished prince of such lowly things!" Falcon interfered, much to Daemon’s surprise. "Do you think he is a coward like you who would rather stay behind your tall gates rather than protect the lands of the GreenLands?!"

In the face of Falcon’s outburst, Modrich’s pride was severely wounded. The man gnawed at his lips, unable to retort probably from fear of raising the ire of—his protector—Eldric. Afterall, no matter what, Falcon was still the Alpha King’s brother of the same mother.

"Now can you stop being a pathetic coward and send your forces to rescue the Theta." Falcon gritted out with much effort, "afterall she is your family."

The word ’family’ lingered over them uncomfortably. Daemon simply shrugged it off, glad at the very least that everything was finally coming to an end. He stood from his chair, calculating that if the war ended in eight days, then he should be back to the Desert South in fourteen days to fulfill his uncle’s dying wish.

And from there, back to the Arctic North to claim what never belonged to anyone in the first place.

Really, everything should go well from that point.

Modrich still looked unwilling. The man could barely act as if he was concerned about his so-called family. His overt displeasure raised Daemon’s hackles as they walked towards the strategy table in his tent.

No matter how much Modrich despised the Theta, it was true that the Theta’s growing powers lended the WolfKnights renowned fame... the kind of fame no one wanted to get rid of. So Modrich’s disgruntlement could only mean one thing; that Eldric had decided to get rid of the Theta who helped him acquire his throne.

Coming to terms with that fact, Daemon looked over the retinue again. They were the Temple Knights, then there was the Special Werewolf Army. Thinking hard about it made Daemon realize their true plans, Eldric hadn’t meant to just eliminate Zina WolfKnight. No, he had meant for the Theta to be eliminated at Daemon’s camp. Then Daemon would have been easily framed for her death leading to his sure demise as many that followed the Theta ardently would thus chant for his death.

The realization gave him a stop. He knew it... had always known that the so-called plan of Xalea Borne assassinating him was wrong in many ways he could not point out. They were the same level of shifters even though Borne had years of experience over him.

Daemon could just imagine Zina WolfKnight being murdered at the camp, and her escorts fake cry of outrage against him as they easily framed him for the murder. It was his camp after all, how could he not know what was going on in here.

But unfortunately for them, Daemon instigating the rogue army had all but destroyed that plan, reducing it to nothing but ashes.

When they started discussing strategy to infiltrate the rogue army and rescue Zina WolfKnight, Daemon could imagine how each of them secretly bore their own private plans, each of them a player in the game of ’how to kill Zina WolfKnight and frame the banished prince for it’.

Which of them truly wanted to rescue her? And which of them wanted her dead?

No matter their various, selfish plans, the help of the WolfKnight’s was not what Daemon truly sought. Glancing at the Wolf Chess Table stationed at the other end of the tent, his sight filtered to the Aberrant piece that had been moved away and isolated from the Supreme Wolf that was supposed to guard her.

He wondered if the Aberrant would be abandoned yet again and taken off the board? Or if finally, the forces behind it would come to her rescue?
