Chapter 60: A Vision From Herself

Chapter 60: A Vision From Herself

ZINA

Zina shut her eyes that night and found herself harshly thrusted into the middle of a field with blazing flowers that could only be white going by how innocent and immaculate they seemed.

Just like the visions she had seen before, in this one, she felt herself floating on air as if she was the vision itself. Tentatively, Zina started to walk between the fields, and to her dismay, she could not help but squash the pristine flowers underneath her feet.

It couldn’t be helped because something at the middle of the field was calling to her. And that voice was much stronger than any reservations she had for squashing the poor flowers.

With raw determination, she waded herself through the endless sea of flowers. Her journey seemed unending until at long last, she got to the middle of the vast garden with flowers that were even taller than her. Birds of the same color as the flower flew overhead, chirping away at their happiness.

Focusing on what had called onto her, before Zina was a small girl with her back against her. She was dressed in a flowing gown matching the color of the flowers.

Zina felt as if she was being intruded on, after all the place where they stood was her secret place. The same place where she had gleaned the vision that the WolfKnight’s would one day rise, the same place where she had seen that Luna Savage’s belly housed a deformed... it was also the same place where she had seen a large wasteland that ran for miles, strewn with malnourished corpse. And that vision was what led her to foretell the famine.

Zina didn’t have a name for the place. But she knew for a fact that it was there that her spiritual powers flowed from. There, a thousand visions of the future and the past were trapped inside, and they teased her one at a time. There, she had the freedom to see.

"Who are you and why do you intrude on my place?" Zina asked strongly, causing the girl whose back was still against her to scoff loudly.

"Your place?" The girl who could not be more than ten repeated in a haughty tone that was strangely familiar to Zina, "I suppose it could be called that." the girl said with a shrug, turning to face Zina.

Zina gasped, her palm flying to cover her mouth as she stared down at the girl whom she was sure was a younger version of herself.

The girl’s eyes were covered with a white blindfold, her white hair rested on her waist, and she held a short walking staff—that was much familiar to the one Zina used when she was a child—in her hands.

"What...? How...?" Zina stuttered, at a loss for what to say.

The younger version of herself raised her chin haughtily. "Might I know why you’re journeying at top speed to your death?"

Zina was at loss from shock. Once she recovered herself, she cleared her throat saying. "Am I supposed to answer that question when I don’t know who I am speaking to?"

The girl ignored the inquiry at her identity like it was such an obvious thing who she was. "Something is waiting for you out there Zina, are you even prepared?" The girl snapped much like an exasperated child would.

Zina frowned, narrowing her eyes at the girl. "I have never been one to hurtle into something unprepared."

"Are you sure about that?" The girl quipped back, "I mean there are a lot of things waiting for you there, including the man you believe you brought down."

The man Zina believed she brought down? What did that even mean?

Not interested in arguing in proverbs and parables with the girl, Zina said in an equally haughty tone. "I will take care of myself. Believe me though when I say the last person I want to take advice from is the younger version of myself."

The girl laughed so hard like Zina just told the best joke of the century. After some time, she abruptly turned serious, pointing her staff at Zina in the same manner Zina did when she told the false vision against Daemon.

"I tell you now, Zina WolfKnight," the girl started in a voice so much like a child’s and still powerful at the same time, "the time for the prophecy of old to come to pass is nigh."

Zina stilled, not quite understanding the words logically. It would seem as though her younger self was there to tell her a vision—a situation that would have been comical otherwise if not for the serious expression the girl wore.

Zina found herself waiting for the girl’s next words much like a starving man anticipating his last supper.

"When the flake falls from your eyes, beware of the first man your eyes shall meet." the girl declared, the staff still pointing at Zina. Something about those words made Zina’s heart ache with a strange sense of grief and loss.

"You must guard your heart and your mind against him," the girl continued, "only that way will the both of you survive."

A sense of foreboding rested between the both of them, and Zina felt firsthand what it feels like to be told a cryptic vision. And she had to admit, the feeling was not a good one.

"And who is this man whom I must guard my heart and mind against?" Zina asked the girl because that was the only thing that didn’t make sense in all she said. As far as Zina could remember, guarding her heart and mind was an art she greatly excelled at. And in all those years she had lived as a woman of power, she had never wavered no matter the form of temptation that presented itself.

The girl smiled shrewdly. "Do you seriously expect me to answer that question?"

Before Zina could retort with an equally biting response, she felt somebody shaking her body softly.

"Theta, Theta, you must wake up! We are being attacked by rogues!"
