Chapter 393: An Unfounded Betrayal

Chapter 393: An Unfounded Betrayal

DAEMON

"I betrayed you because you betrayed Freya first," Melwyn spat at Daemon, a dying woman’s last attempt to leave her mark in the world by some deceptive ranting at how the entire world had been way too unfair to her.

"Is that what she told you," Daemon said, deciding to give the woman a last lick of his attention. Mainly because he nothing important to do for the time being until a long awaited guest of his arrived.

What better way to spend the remainder of his time but by listening to the rantings of a failed woman.

"You rejected her as your mate, did you not?!" Melywn growled, the chandelier that she hung from, dancing above her as if to announce her impending death should she tug on it the wrong way.

"We mutually rejected each other in fact," Daemon said with a smirk, "but say I did reject her, whatever could be the problem with that? There’s no law that says I must be tied to the whims of fate, Melwyn. Betraying me must have caused you to forget who I am so let me remind you; no goddess, no moon in this world, no fated nonsense is enough to control what I do or choose not to do."

Melwyn glared at him, the delusional woman not believing a word he said. The fact that she had been so brainwashed to the point that she ended up in that state almost made Daemon question his taste in the people ge surrounded himself with.

He had always prided himself for knowing how to chose a loyal subordinate. Whether it was his time in the Army Without An Alpha, or whether it was his time as Alpha King, he had never chosen wrong.

Not for once had he executed a close subordinate for disloyalty. Melwyn would be the first of such mistakes.

"How high and might you’re....!" She spat, giggling like she was possessed by an ancient spirit, "how ever could I forget how much you love and thrive on control! You move everything around you like pieces on that board of yours and without emotion. You should have stayed emotionless and rejected Zina as well."

Daemon took a seat, pouring some alcohol for himself while he took in the expressions of the rest of the guest. Norima and the Mage who were both seated had taken to listening to Melwyn who seemed to be the only interesting thing in the room while Malik and Mandem guarded the door—not like that was necessary.

Crossing his legs, he stared straight at the bound woman who glared at him as well with equal measures. "The fact that you still haven’t realized that your sworn sister lied to you and manipulated you as well is quite disappointing, Melwyn. I thought I taught you better than that."

Her response was tugging harder at her chains which only rattled the chandelier even more as she let out a blood chilling scream. Thankfully, the doors and walls of the establishment made it so that sounds could not easily escape the room.

"Let me make this clear now simply because I find that it’s quite fun watching you squirm in your foolish ignorance; years ago I and Freya Fergus mutually rejected each other because her family was on the brink of ruins. You probably met her after that and she save your life.

"Forming the bond of sworn sisters, she told you a sorry story of how oh so terrible her life had been. Unbeknownst to you though, she was already working for Master and Rowan so you buy her story, viewing her as the most pitable werewolf in the world; rejected when she was at her lowest, is that correct? Have I missed any point so far?"

Again, Melwyn’s only response was a glare. Daemon twirled the contents of his glass and continued, "Then you also started working for Master and Rowan, the two of you forming this vendetta of bringing down the heartless man, Daemon NorthSteed. You join my army, then win the then Commander Kairos’ trust. By default, that also mean that you win over me right? After all, Kairos was one of my most trusted commanders. By being his most trusted, I had no choice but to trust you as well, right?"

Again, she simply glared, but Daemon didn’t stop.

"But then, Kairos leaves the army and you follow him to establish his pack. Since you were serving as a spy on me for your Master, Kairos unexpected move dented your plans. Your Master had to scramble his head on how to put a spy on me especially given my connection which his experiment, and the only plan he could come up with four years later was to send my rejected mate my way. They beat her to pieces, drop her bloodied body by my gates to elicit pity from me, right?"

Another glare, but this time, it faltered.

"But then, both Freya and your master realize that I am not so easy to spy on. She decides to move quickly with the plan of stealing Zina’a staff, but then the power backfires, impaling her by her heart."

A lone tear rolled down Melwyn’s sweaty face while her glare faltered more and more.

"But instead of your Master saying the truth to you, he tells you that I killed your sworn sister. Probably made up some story like I did it to assuage Zina’s jealousy. To avenge your sister, you wait for the right time, and the moment it fell on your laps, you didn’t hesitate to move in with Kairos, promising yourself that you will surely destroy both I and Zina, right?"

Another year rolled down her face while Daemon dropped his glass, standing to his full height as he approached the woman.

"Did I ever treat you wrong, Melwyn?"

Her lips wobbled but she held her head up nonetheless. "No."

"Did Zina ever treat you wrong?" He asked, not like the answer mattered even if it was in the affirmative.

"No," she answered again.

"So you admit that your betrayal was unfounded?"

Her lips wobbled even more, tears rolling down her face. "Yes." She answered in a whisper that seized the room. It seemed all waited with bated breath for what Daemon would do next.

"Please," she begged, "my son had nothing to do with it."

"Traitors must burn, Melwyn. That is the only place for them in this world. In due course, I shall return every pain on her body on you, every hurt on her heart to you. And the gods help you if I should find her not in one piece."

Just then a knock sounded and the door opened revealing a cloaked figure that Daemon had been waiting for all along.

Finally, Shadow was there. Everything might just end sooner than he expected.

And better than he expected too.
