Chapter 381: An Escape Plan
Chapter 381: An Escape Plan
ZINA
At first, Zina didn’t want to name her unborn child because the profoundness of the act would only make her eventual pain even more painful.
But when she had been taken to the Cave Manor to meet her mother, she suddenly remembered the stories that Kelkov told her of the powerful, strong woman who was strapped in chains before her.
The woman who toiled for her own child for six years and still possessed the bravery to name her child even before she ever had one.
Kelkov had said that Luna Ameneris Screamers had long come up with names for her child should she conceive. If it were a boy then he would be called Zelkov, if it were a girl, then she would be called Zina.
In the face of her mother’s profound bravery, Zina was suddenly ashamed of her decision to not name her child. Even as they spat horrible words to each other in an attempt to keep up with a dangerous act, that bravery of hers had not eluded Zina.
So following the tradition of the Screamers Pack, she had named her child a name starting with B—Brynn. She didn’t need to come with an alternative name for a boy, somehow she knew it in her bones just the same way she saw her visions that her unborn child was a girl... a daughter.
But now she was gone.
Wiping away Seraph’s tears, Zina squared her shoulders and tugged the girl to face her squarely.
After going through five of those torturous visions, Zina was forced to accept her powerlessness in that place. Whether it be blocking the mate bond with Daemon, or blocking the pack link with the NorthSteed Pack, it had become apparent that these people had long been prepared for her since the twenty-four years since she was born.
"Stop crying," she said in a harsh voice and the girl instantly stopped, staring at her wide eyed.
"I am sorry... you’re not crying and yet...."
"That is because I’ve already cried Seraph," Zina said curtly, gripping the girl but the shoulders to convey the seriousness of the words she was about to say next. "Listen to me, Daemon is plotting something to save us. But I am convinced that before his plots will bear fruits I might have already been broken by then."
Seraph sniffled, then wiped at her nose and tears, sitting upright. "What are they doing to you in there?"
Zina shook her head, "that is not important right now Seraph. It’s barely been one day since I’ve been taken and yet I feel that before tomorrow reaches, I would be long gone by then."
Even though the girl didn’t understand, she still nodded as Zina expected, seriousness etched to her face. "So what do you want me to do, Theta?" She asked.
"We must escape, and to do that, we need a fool proof plan. Sitting here like ducks won’t help us."
"I know that Theta," Seraph whispered, looking at the door as if fearing anyone would burst inside any moment, "but they restrict my movements in here. Whenever I attempt to walk around and study the layouts of the mansion, that old woman would rear that ugly face of hers."
A plan—a very dangerous one—formed in Zina’s head. She had been going about the entire affair the wrong way and it was about time to correct it.
There was no way that she could escape that place, but she was certain she could help Seraph, and to do that, she needed the same Runes that her mother had used to portal Zelkov more than thirty years ago.
To do that, she needed to first locate the Runes—an impossible task for sure seeing how much their movements was restricted. But their life on the line, and she was willing to bet on everything to get it done.
But she didn’t say any of that to the maidservant knowing fully well that Seraph would never agree to leaving alone.
"Here’s what will happen, I need you to gather Candles for me," she instructed the girl, "no matter how hard it is, you must try."
Seraph nodded grimly, "I will. Even if they lash at the same way they did, even if it will cost my life I will get them for you."
"No it must not cost your life," Zina chided, "and if possible, see if you can access the library and get some sort of map to this cave. Also, I was coming, I pretended to faint when I was with melwyn. I shall draw a map starting from the ocean."
"But I hear they are a lot of ocean here in the West." Seraph said, "are you quite sure of the exact ocean?"
Zina was almost proud of her logical objection. Because of her blindness, Seraph had had to learn a lot to become literate. This was also so she could be able to read petitions and such to Zina who was the Theta at the time. Finally, they might yet see a payout from that endeavor.
"It’s true they are lot of oceans here," she answered, "but not all oceans here in the West experience violent tides even during a moonless night."
Seraph nodded enthusiastically, "It’s true. The night you were brought in, the sky was entirely blank. Once we manage to escape, the Alpha King with his intelligence will surely be able to track it down."
Zina smiled, hiding her unease. "Yes. You must try hard to do your part, if I manage to see an opening, I will do what I must."
Brown eyes stared at her with worry. "What must you do Theta?"
Zina smiled, "I need to make contact with my mother. The words I must pry out from her are important in our escape. And when the time comes, you’ve to be there with me."
Zina had long figured out that for her mother to be able to connect to the Runes of the Pack during the projection, then it must be somehwere close to her prison.
Seraph looked a bit hesitant, but she nodded nonetheless. "Okay. I will find the maps and the candles. Then when we get back, his majesty will surely bring ruin to them for what they have done to you and your unborn child." The girl finished with a sob.
Zina smiled sadly—Seraph might be intelligent, but more often than not, she was still that naive village girl whom believed in seers and whatnot.
If she and Seraph managed to stand before her mother, then Zina might be able send Seraph away.
She would only have one chance, and for her to have that one chance in the first place, she would have to make Rowan and his Master believe they have broken her.
And for that believe to root its place in their minds, Zina would actually have to broken for real.
"If a time comes when it seems like I don’t recognize you," Zina said hurriedly just as she heard distant footsteps at the door, "then say the words Brynn to me. I will recognize you then."
Seraph didn’t seem to understand the words, but like the ever fervent servant she had always been to Zina, she nodded. "I understand, Theta."
And then the door opened, and her captors took her away for her sixth round of taming.
