Chapter 371: The Staff
Chapter 371: The Staff
DAEMON
"You know exactly what I’ve to command of you, Norima Talga." Daemon said, pacing in front of the Arctic Throne while a plan formed in his head on his best he might utilize the staff in rescuing Zina.
There’s was only one thing missing in the elaborate plan map—a convincing pawn.
The woman kneeling before him glanced around her uncomfortably at first as if to gauge how much she should speak before she launched into her explaination.
"The Luna Queen gave me this staff, your majesty. I did not steal it," She said cautiously.
"That is hardly in doubt, Talga. You know what you should speak of and I would advise you to quit running around the bush."
"That is as well, your majesty. The Luna Queen entrusted this staff to me to use it to perform a backtracking spell. Believe me when I say she told me nothing about the powers it possess and what it can do."
"You sound aggrieved," Daemon noted with a dark chuckle.
"I would not dare," The woman protested, her forehead to the ground to show her some sort of loyalty that Daemon wasn’t interested in, "however it is true that this staff almost killed my sisters. And to top it all, the Luna Queen had also sent an assassin to claim my life." She finshed, glaring at Reed who stood just by her left side.
"So you’re aggrieved after all." Daemon said darkly, stepping down from the throne section to the audience section where the woman trembled on the floor.
"It’s not...."
"The fact that you would think my summoning of you is to hear how the Luna Queen, my wife, has aggrieved you is highly offensive."
Daemon stopped short just in front of her while the woman turned redder. Already, her albinotic skin was not helping her complexion, but the fear she felt at their proximity made it worse.
Her reddish golden eyes dilated into a slit like a puppeteer on some dark show. "I made no progress with the Luna Queen’s task," she answered more intelligently, "however given sometime I might be able to make some breakthrough."
"You’ve had two days, Talga. I doubt whatever breakthrough you can make." Daemon said in an attempt to dismiss her as useless. But as he turned his back to him, she launched into a well expected protest.
"I sought the help of an ancient Mage, your majesty. Maybe not me, but should this Mage get his hands on this staff, he will deliver you worthy results."
"Your words make me wonder just how weak the Night Mages have become, so much so that your to seek the help of another for something that is supposed to well under your powers." Daemon taunted, reeling her in the net that he had successfully set a bait in.
"Your majesty, you might not understand the kind of powers that staff has," Norima gritted, "one of my sisters was crippled when we attempted to channel it. It’s our luck that she is able to keep her life."
"So the staff is much more powerful than the whole of the Night Mages?" Daemon said, facing her squarely.
"Maybe not," she answered vaguely, "my Father might be able to handle its powers well. But I and the Queen had a deal—should I deliver results, she would help me ascend as the leader of the Night Mages."
Daemon eyed the woman amusedly—Even Zina had gone behind him to strike a deal with the Night Mages knowing fully well that he intended to squash the organization and the remainin evils of the Five Great Evil.
Just what was she thinking—Daemon was finding it harder to understand his wife.
"So you’re asking me to entrust this staff to you instead of Saber Talga, your father who might be more capable?"
"I am asking that you trust in the Queen’s decision to entrust me with it instead of my father." She answered, an attempt to press down at some nonexistent weak point Daemon might have for some last decision his wife might have made.
He was amused at the attempt which there was no need for. Daemon already had Saber Talga on his spy watchlist of possible traitors. He wonders if Zina knew the same and had resorted to manipulating the daughter instead.
"That is as well then," Daemon declared, "Yaren prepare a room for our esteemed guest and invite this so called Mage she speaks of. You have five hours to decode the staff and do whatever magic you’ve to do."
Norima guffawed at him in disbelief. "But the Mage is still back at our territory. It would take some time before he gets here,"
"Then you would better start describing him to Yaren so as to expediate this matter. Five hours is already me having mercy on you."
Daemon took back the staff, placing it on the table in the throne room while Yaren and Norima made their exit. Something told him that holding onto that staff was some insurance if some sort, and he didn’t plan on letting it out his sight anytime soon.
Marcus stepped forward alongside Fionna. "Since the staff is here, you can assign us our mission now."
"The both of you will be travelling to the GreenLands," Daemon instructed handing them a piece of paper that contained well outlined job role he had for them, "first to the Red Sisters, second to the WolfKnights, and third to the Matriarchy Pack. You must be done in twelve hours with seven hours for your journey to and fro."
The duo nodded grimly as Daemon expected, not voicing a single objection. Traveling to the GreenLands in three hours and thirty minutes was going to be hell on their bodies, but too much was on stake.
They perused through the piece of paper together. "Nothing is said here about what we are to do at the Red Sisters," Marcus voiced, noticing that.
Daemon turned to Fionna. "You’re no longer a Red Sister, and I know they hold it over me. But you just inquire about someone for me."
"Who is that?"
"She was called Rose. A trainer of some sorts."
Fionna’s expression darkened and Daemon knew he had hit a spot. "I’ve heard of her," she said, but Daemon sensed there was lie there although of no consequence to him.
"Fine. I’ve a reason to believe the Red Wolf has her under his employ. Investigate everything about this Rose."
"Of course, your majesty." They echoed in one voice.
