Chapter 362: Breakfast With The Devil
ZINA
Morning sickness started on a bad day. The food on the table all smelt like vomit and spit despite how fine and eye appealing it all looked.
But rather than bolt out of the room to succumb to the vices of her pregnancy while retching out her organs, because there was truly nothing in her stomach. She swallowed back her vomit and began to shove the food in her stomach.
Tears threatened to pinch her eyes, but she beat them down. No, this was not the time. This was not the time to show any weakness.
She must be strong for Daemon and her mother for as long as she could afford it. And when it came to the point where she must take her life, then she must be strong enough to do the same.
So while she wolfed down the food that tasted like something spoilt and decaying, the Red Wolf also known as Rowan ate his very elegantly like he wasn’t some cold blooded devil and ritualist who was upending her life.
When Zina had cleared her plate, the man was only halfway done with his.
So Zina waited, albeit impatiently for him to be done already. And she didn’t know whether it was just her impatience or himself, but it felt as though he ate incredibly slow.
When they were done, the fake steward entered the room and cleared the plates while shooting Zina a conceited glare. Zina returned the kind gesture with a scowl of her own.
"Do you’ve any questions for me?" The Red Wolf asked, the picture of mannerism and courtesy.
Zines almost wanted to laugh at that. She had many questions of course, but instead she said, "No I don’t have any. Now lead the way to where my mother is."
She stood but the Red Wolf remained seating.
"Are you sure you’re not interested in hearing the grand plans we have for you. The Master has been waiting for twenty-four years now."
Zina rolled her eyes. "I’ve no interest in hearing of your twisted plans. I shall see my mother this instant,"
"You’re a very demanding person. I am sure it hasn’t been easy on your husband, Daemon NorthSteed."
Zina reared back, glaring at the man. Their conversation had absolutely nothing to do with Daemon so why did it seem like he was intentionally using him as some sort of bait against her.
"So you do know he is my husband. Which also means you know that you abducted a married woman. I shall not bother to comment on your shamelessness as I am well aware you’re conscious of it, but drawing my husband into this nonexistent conversation is a bottom line that I cannot condone!"
He eyed, almost as if he was assessing her.
"Where’s your staff?" He asked slowly.
"What staff?" Zina retorted immediately. "I do not own such a property I am afraid."
He was still sitting and she standing.
"Without that staff, there’s just half of you." He said while Zina chuckled.
"Well well, isn’t that good news."
"This is no joke. You must tell me where that staff is."
Zina, infuriated with the back and forth picked up a fork from the table that the fake steward had overlooked and then approached the man until she was standing before his chair.
"Say I do not reveal where it is, what are you going to do me? Torture me till I die? Threaten to take away my child before it’s born? Or perhaps you would be merciful enough to allow me carry my child full term so you will cruelly take him away from me after it is born?"
She chuckled for the dramatic effect of it. "Truly, l am not curious. But know it that no matter how much you intend to torture me, you will not hear the whereabouts of that staff from my mouth."
The Red Wolf was yet again amused. Zina wished she could pluck his eyes out with the fork. "What if tortured your poor mother? The woman who carried you for nine months and mourned you for twenty four years. Surely you would not want that?"
"Good," Zina exclaimed in the coldest voice she could muster, eyes devoid of emotion. "Torture her within an inch of her life then. Make sure it’s painful enough that she understands the pain I went through carrying the tag of the abandoned one. Make sure you torture her so slowly and torturously that she will never ever think of having a child in her next life, and the next life after it. And while you’re at it, make sure you let her know that it is a gift from the daughter she never had."
The Red Wolf looked surprised, his eyes studying Zina for a hint of her deception, but all he could see were the ice walls that Zina had built around her heart that caged her eyes as well.
All he could see was a spiteful woman filled with hate and devoid of love. A shell—albeit a well practiced one.
When you fight with the devil, you had to become the devil yourself. And when Zina realised she was in the West, she was forced to abandon herself back at the North in the safety of Daemon’s hands.
The woman there in the West currently was Zina the Abandoned one. A woman so hurt, so destroyed, and without any love to spare for her unborn child and her mother.
Back in the North she had left the real her. The one who loved hard, and hated hard. Here, she would be the ruthless thing they expected her to be. It might not be a very convincing show, but it didn’t mean she wouldn’t try hard enough.
She might not be able to save herself, but through that way, she might be able to save all. And the person who taught her her current attitude was her mother.
Back then in that projection, the woman had been this cold. Colder even. Even though her harsh words hid the love she had for Zina, she didn’t hesitate to say the cold words a mother would never say to her long lost child when meeting them for the first time.
Zina could not afford to disappoint her mother sun that regards. If she could afford such coldness back at the time during their first meeting, then Zina certainly could afford to be far colder.
The Red Wolf eventually broke into a huge grin, then he stood to his feet. "Fine then, it seems you’ve come prepared. We shall now go and meet your mother. This reunion has been a long time coming."
