Chapter 350: How Did Freya Fergus Die?!
ZINA
Melwyn bowed and Zina noticed the woman’s eyes flicker straight behind her. What did she notice? The letter she was burning.
"I am curious as to why you would want that. Already, I did my best in finding the energy inside you."
"What energy exactly?" Zina probed. Daemon hadn’t explained it exactly and that was one of the reasons why she summoned Melwyn. She needed to understand it better.
"People that are experimented on with dark magic always have a shadow in them," Melwyn explained instantly, "however in your case your shadow is a living, breathing thing."
"And what exactly does that mean?" Zina interrogated her, knowing fully well that there was something more she wasn’t talking about.
"In most cases it simply means a very potent dark magic. We are talking curses, hexes. But in your case, your shadow breathes differently... like it’s another living thing. You didn’t see it that night, but when I touched you, it almost knocked me off my feet." She finished. Zina thought there was a bit of yearning in the woman’s voice as she stated that fact, but she could be wrong.
The first time that Melwyn had examined her, Zina had been sleeping blissfully and Daemon had taken it upon itself to see it through so of course, she hadn’t witnessed what the woman spoke of.
But she was sure she spoke the truth, and it was probably that truth that sent Daemon in over his head with the notion of protecting Zina from whatever that was coming for her.
"Is it truly that powerful?" Zina said, swallowing hard, "Powerful enough to knock you off your feet even when it’s yet to manifest fully?"
"I am afraid so," Melwyn said, eyes holding a certain strange hue. "His majesty wanted me to examine your staff as well, but we couldn’t find it so we just settled with examining your body."
Zina smiled to herself. That was because she had hidden the thing, and now it was gone from the castle entirely.
"Yes. I stowed it away."
Melwyn’s eyes glittered somewhat. "I can dig as deep as you want if I can get my hands on it. I can find out more."
"There would be no need." Zina answered quickly, "I am not interested in this dark shadow, I am interested in something else entirely."
Melwyn looked somewhat crestfallen, but the expression disappeared almost immediately. "You’re not?" She repeated like she couldn’t understand otherwise the reason why Zina would have summoned her.
Zina knew that Daemon had said nothing to Melwyn and Alpha Kairos about her origin from the Screamera Pack, so she treaded carefully.
Because she still had her suspicions on the reason why she was able to summon her mother through the projection she carefully spoke. "When you were examining me, you did so with the mind of finding elements of dark magic right?"
Melwyn nodded. "That could be said."
"Can I trust you to keep an open mind this time around? Probe inside me and find something... anything."
Melwyn seemed confused, rightfully so. "What exactly am I to find?"
"Perhaps, a different kind of shadow ? One that is not dark?"
Melwyn shook her head immediately. "It’s not possible for dark and light shadows to exist in one person. The dark would naturally snuff out the light. If a light shadow is what you ask me to seek, then I’m afraid you hope wrongly."
"Do you mean it’s not possible at all?" Zina said, remembering the cold feeling she had when she had been transported to the projection. It had seemed somewhat similar to her way of seeing far superior vision, except that time around... she had felt so much in control.
The world had stopped, just for her. And she figured that must have been one of the powers of the runes of her pack. But there was one problem; the runes hadn’t been with her. So how did she do it?
There was one undisputable law in their world—something is not born from nothingness. Everything had its origin, every power it’s place.
Her ability to see visions was in one way or the other connected to her blood—one might call it a talent even; one that she sure that the people that sired her never expected. But what of that projection she was able to muster according to Zelkov? What connected it to her?
And that was the answer she was seeking from Melwyn.
"There’s an exception though," Melwyn said after giving it a though.
Zina perked up, listening to her. "And what is it?"
"If it’s a powerful enough shadow, they can almost coexist with a dark shadow."
Zina outstretched her arm without another word. "In that case, check me."
Melwyn chucked uncomfortably, "if that is rare, it would extremely rare for you, Theta. You do not come from a witch line, or even from any of the five great evils."
But Zina came from the Screamers Pack that had long been persecuted for possessing powers that was said to be identical to that of an organization, and that was in it self different. But Melwyn didn’t know that.
Nonetheless, the other woman held her outstretched arm, and a burst of warm light appeared, merging their skin to one.
The light had a tingling effect. Like Zina’s skin was being pierced. It was almost as if she could doze off of given the opportunity.
Melwyn concentrated intently, focusing on the part of Zina’s arm where the light enveloped her. Seconds stretched in to minutes, and Zina somewhat lost count of time as she stared with bated breath. Her legs weak underneath her.
She too, began to sweat like Melwyn.
After a far long stretch of time, Melwyn stared at her strangely and then asked the most unusual question. "How did Freya Fergus die? I heard you witnessed it for yourself."
Zina mess a bit muddle headed. "What?" She said, confused at first.
Why was Melwyn asking her about Freya Fergus. Not most people knew of dead woman. Daemon had ensured to keep it like that. But when she nothing else, Melwyn’s expression grew—incensed?
"I asked how did she die?!" She screamed the question forcefully causing Zina to instinctively want to tug her hand back. But Melwyn held it with a vise grip and a thunderous expression.
Eyes drawn together, lips thinned, skin paler from her sweat.
She no longer looked like the playful witch woman Zina knew. She now looked like the devil herself.
