EIGHT YEARS AFTER THE EXECUTION

Locked in a drab hole, her body hung by silver chains, Ameneris had lost count of the time that had passed since that dreaded day... just the same way she had lost count of the number of her times her body had been violated by that vile creature.

She had heard about the Deformed in the tales of old, but seeing three of them at the place where the Red Wolf had held her captive had been quite the shocker. Apparently, when she had been worrying about the Progenity of her pack, someone else had been busy creating an army of unnaturals.

At some point, she had become so numb to the motions of the creature taking her that she would recede in a far corner of her mind when the motions were happening.

She would just stay there in her mind and imagine that she was back at the Screamers Pack, worrying about whether her next issue would survive the second month before miscarriage would come knocking on her door.

Most times, she was jolted into reality for reality was after all far painful. But most times, she managed to hold onto the fantasy for so long that she forgot the humiliation she was forced to go through .

But nine months ago, the creature had stopped visiting after a witch had announced that she had finally taken in.

Funny how the very thing she yearned all her life was now coming to her in the form of a sleazy horror story.

Ameneris imagined that just like her life had been, she would probably loose the child in the second month of her pregnancy. She prayed for a miscarriage and earnestly hoped for one.

In her head, she screamed to the moon goddess that if she did exist, then she wouldn’t allow such a painful, shameful thing to come to past.

But her preganancy progressed from the second month to the third, from the third to the fourth, then the fifth, the sixth, seventh, eighth, and now, she on the ninth month.

The moon goddess of course, had ignored her prayers and desperate pleas, and the powers above had decided to play the cruelest joke on her yet.

She supposed this was in one way an answer to her prayer. For after all, when she was with the Screamers Pack as Luna, she earnestly prayed for a full term pregnancy and the joy of carrying her baby.

But now, all she did all day long was imagine the kind of horrible monster she would birth. Even though her mind was a haze most times, she usually heard the Red Wolf and the one he called Master speaking of how the child in her belly would become an ultimate weapon.

A cursed weapon.

An abandoned weapon.

Forged in despair, birthed in anarchy, and thrown in abandonment.

They said with the child, they would ascend to the point of a wolf above every other wolf.

It didn’t sound like a Supreme Shifter to her, so Ameneris could very well imagine the monster that she would sprout.

And she hated that monster even before laying eyes on it, and she abhorred being the instrument that would carry such evil and bring it into the world.

Her captors knew she was mad from her situation. So mad that she wouldn’t hesitate to destroy her womb and the monster in it should she have the choice. So even until her ninth month of pregnancy, she was still tied up with silver chains and fed and tended to by a maid that certainly didn’t like her or her job of cleaning up her mess.

Ameneris would have died from the despair alone, but the one thing that kept her going was the Runes of her pack that she sensed was kept in the room next to her.

The Rune reminded her that she could not leave this world easily without seeking revenge. The Rune shaped her thoughts into sharp weapons of self torture and eternal remembrance of how her Pack had faded away.

So even though she never had any progress, she silently began to practice how to absorb its powers.

She believed Ada’s words held a certain weight, so her zero progress hardly deterred her. Every day, she concentrated slowly on the aura of the Rune, hoping to tap into it even though she was a room away.

And then finally, her birth day came.

Her first ever birth day.

Lying in her pool of blood Ameneris screamed as she found herself in the most painful labour. An affair she would have gladly gone through with joy was now a torment like no other.

Eight hours into it, she heard the Red Wolf speaking to his Master. "We should cut off the child from her belly."

"I would like to do that but the mother is an important weapon for us to control the child in the future. Her blood will be the key and we will need it fresh when the time reaches."

Evil, Ameneris muttered. Those people were pure evil.

The wet nurses saw her reluctance in actually pushing, so they devised another tactic where they would push down the child in her belly by pressing down on her belly. It worked for the next thing she heard was, "the head is out!"

Despair. Bleakness. No joy.

Ameneris laid in a pool of her blood, her water, and her waste while she stared blankly at the ceiling. She must have droned out at that point, knowing fully well that the birth of the monster was a finished affair.

But the, she heard a cry that snapped her attention to the wet nurses. They were cradling a bloody mess, and Ameneris felt herself sitting upright despite the pain she was in.

"It’s a girl," they said.

A girl? And not a monster? Not a deformed?

"Let me see her," Ameneris said, out of breath.

The wet nurses eyed her, but then passed the child reluctantly to her.

Ameneris’ breath caught in her throat, and her heart stopped beating.

It was no monster. It was no creature. It was her daughter.

"Child...." She gasped, amazed. Tears began to stream down her face, and the bay stopped crying.

Eyes shut, she seemed to snuggle into Ameneris like she had found her home.

Why had she only had evil thoughts against her for nine months? Not for a moment had she loved her, cared for her, or even wanted her. And yet, once she came into the world, she loved her first without reservation.

Yes. That could be the only definition of the feeling that Ameneris was currently submerged in. It had to be love, nothing but love.

"My child...." She muttered again, and cradled her close to her bosom. Then the girls eyes snapped open, staring at her.

Even though Ameneris could not see it clearly, she could tell the baby was a copy of her. Same silver hair, and same light blue eyes.

"Zina...." She named her under her breath, "she had finally gotten her Zina."

But before she could revel anymore in the joy of motherhood and the sight of her child, she was taken away from her.

Ameneris roared. "NO!!!! Don’t take her away from me!!!"

"She was never yours to begin with," the Red Wolf said.

Ameneris shook her head. "That is untrue. She is mine in every sense of the world. She loved me even before I loved her...."

"Don’t be so attached...." The Red Wolf said with a chuckle, "we will first take her sight, her wolf, and then we will send her to a place of despair to grow. She is not yours to train... she’s ours to shape."

"NO!!!" Ameneris thundered, staggering to her bloody feet, "Zina is mine!"

"Mmmm... so you’ve already given her a name. Fine, I shall do you a favour and include that little detail in the letter we will send her new family. But rest assured that she would grow so abandoned that even her name would never stand out to her."

Her screams were no use. Her objections only tired her out. The girl, Zina was taken away from her.

They said she was never hers, and yet why was it that when she looked at the child, she had never felt anything that was truly hers the way she felt with her.

They said she would be the crudest monster, but why was it that the child had a look angels could only dream of.

Something shifted with Ameneris. There was no need to mourn or scream... reality was crude.

They would do unthinkable things to her child and she would have no power against them. But there was something she could gamble on and do herself.

Shutting her eyes, she tapped into the ever present aura of the Runes next door. But instead of absorbing it, she manipulated a zap of it to shoot straight for the child.

Monster or not, her Zina was a member of the screamers pack.

Ameneris failed at first.

Stumbled at second.

But the third try did the magic, and a bolt of the rune tethered itself to her child that was being taken away from her.

Ameneris spoke under her breath hoping that wherever Zina grew she would hear those words. "Even though I was forced to abandon you, I’ve never truly abandoned you."

And then, the child was finally taken away from the room until she was out of sight... but never out of mind.

THE END.
